It's nice to see a more human element of Parcells. More often then not you get a weird, mythological creature rather than an actual honest to goodness human when people talk about him.

As a side note, you better hope it doesn't get moved to POFO, otherwise they'll be five pages of screeds about how Parcells should have screamed some combination of "Get a job" or "BOOTSTRAPS" out the window at him.

Hey thanks for posting that, what a great article. It's great for Parcells to do something like that. He is a classy human being with his heart in the right place.

Great, great story it reminds me of that story a few years ago when Tony Romo helped that lady change her tire.

Is that really what this guy needs? Sounds like an incredibly sadistic act if you ask me. Bill gives him a magic carpet ride out west and then it's right back to the streets?

This is great! They should hire him for something at the stadium.

By the way, I hope the Eagles coach is right about eventually playing us in the Super Bowl!

So, Parcells gives the man tickets (that Parcells got for free) and talks to him a few minutes here and there (when Parcells is notorious for talking peoples' ears off) and this is some great humanitarian act? Hmmm.

Look I love Parcells for what he's done for team, and he's a football legend, but this isn't really story-worthy, impressive or even all that admirable.

Its funny, how humans always feel the need to prop up their heroes to be more than they are. Take Zach. My favorite player of all time. A great MLB. An asset to the team. By all appearances, he seems to be a great guy....but he wasn't a leader. Most would consider him one, but he just wasn't. Its not in his make up as a person. Players could try to emulate him, but he never led them (except in tackles, lol).

Zach is also my favorite player :D
But i don't agree with the assesment that he wasn't a leader.
Maybe he wasn't a leader from the vocal point of things, somebody like Joey who pumps team up and all. But he lead by example. It was said many many times over the years that his quiet dimineor, his work ethic rubbed off on people, especially younger guys.

    I agree.

I also agree with whoever said Parcells should try and get this guy a job. That to me would be a better (more appropriate) gesture than tickets to a game.

    JMHO.

    Googled exact definition of Mentor.
    1. a wise and trusted counselor or teacher.
    2. an influential senior sponsor or supporter.

    Zach was not a mentor.
He was a person who took care of his business, and did whatever he had to do to suceed. He didin't follow players around telling them what to do, he did his part and people watched him, and followed his actions. That is leadership.

No, a leader takes the reigns. Zach just played a high level of football. JT was a leader (not a positive one) but still a leader.

And FTR, the definition you found matches up exactly with how you described Zach. The definition of leader doesn't.

True. I can also water a plant without being a botanist.

We've all been around that guy at work. The one that does his job well, been there forever, trained people, used as an example, yet is passed over for every promotion, because no matter how good he is, he doesn't lead people.

Yeah I can make a generalized counter argument also. Hey if you physically lead a camel to water and it drinks you are a leader. How is that one?
And we've also been around people who push by being in the dirt with their workers and pushing themselves. Again you don't have to talk to be a leader, actions can make you just as big as a leader. In face we have seen teams rally around qbs just because they win.

Not bad. Though if cliches aren't valid tot he argument, then "leading by example", would have to be dropped as well...no?

Who said you have to talk to take lead? You honestly don't see the difference between the way Penny took the team over and the way Zach never did?

sure. you get the point though. you can put a plant in water, but it won't always drink without someone telling it to. there a combination of yours and mine. :hi5:

Sure I do, I am just not willing to say zach was not a leader/could not have been a leader. Now was he as good a leader as penny, no he wasn't. But very few people are as good a leader as penny.

as opposed to the 90% of people in the same position as parcells that roll up their window and continue chatting on their blue-tooth?

i dont think there is any doubting parcells is a good guy....and didnt have to do anything he did.....

    Nice.

Penny is a hell of a leader, however, if you aren't willing to use any criteria, and make everyone just varying degrees of leaders...than what's the point?

I know I'm about to lose what tiny credibility I have, but in the movie Mobsters (I'm sorry), the leader was decided by a boy. He was told to walk in and give the note to the guy in charge. One had "it", the other didn't.

I dunno Fin D, I thought it was pretty cool. I mean, he didn't have to do anything for the guy. As Sick said, most people wouldn't even roll down the window - I sure as hell wouldn't.

And it's not like Parcells came out and told this story to get acclaim or a pat on the back. I think what someone said about knocking him for not getting the guy a job is bit ridiculous.

Besides, didn't you start a thread about how you gave a homeless lady money? (and yelling at the other woman, of course)

Look, if the great universal question of our age was, "Does Bill Parcells have a heart?", then this wouldn't classify as proof. It a was simple, nice gesture. For a man of Parcells stature and means, it was little more than holding the door open for an old lady.

Please understand, I'm not hating on the guy, I'm just saying this wasn't some grand display of philanthropy. And yes, I've heard of many players and coaches doing a lot more for people in need.

who said im making everyone a varying degree of leader?
I have not mentioned anyone except zach. Point is there are different types of leaders, and yes there can be good and bad leaders. To try to argue that would be pretty inane.
