I've been a pretty big critic of Davis, but today he looked pretty good. Maybe even better than Sean Smith, who has widely been considered the better of the two CB's in the early going. Thoughts/opinions?
I thought they both looked pretty good out there. Sean Smith almost had an early pick that would have been huge and stopped that initial 3 (and probably gone all the way back for 6). If I recally there was a PI call on Davis, but I didn't hear anything out of Smith. I think they're both going to excel in different areas, but from what I heard and saw don't think either was really a step above the other today
I was thinking the same thing during the game. Vontae can lay the hit and Smith should have had a pick 6 in the 1st half. I like em both.
They both played very good games in different aspects. They're two different types of corners, and each is good at what they do. We might have our next Madison/Surtain duo in the making. And if Will Allen can come back next year and with Nathan Jones on the team, our CB situation is pretty solid.
the future is great for both. smith still gives up the inside routes protecting the sideline. vontae is worlds better playing the run and [probably better all arounbd
Me too I have been very critical of Davis but he out played Smith today. However both players had their share of mistakes.
I agree. They both are very good though. We will see how they do next week. What a test will Randy and Welker be.
I think they both played well and both of those guys are awesome Rookie Both there futures are bright. But Vonate Played a little better because of his tackling and those Big hits.Smith had a few blown coverage plays but he was very reliable almost had a pick but when he tipped the pass it set up a FG instead of Td Thumbs up to them Both
They both are going to be outsytanding with a few more years of experience and with that said, both give up way to many BIG plays by big plays I'm talking about 20+ yard receptions Before today Davis allowed 12 pass completions for 269 yards while Smith had allowed 12 pass completions for 270 yards
Props to the secondary today!! Sanchez had alot of time in the pocket today, in key situations (4th and Goal in the final 2) and had No One to go to!!! Plus that hit by Gibril on Sanchez in the first half!!!!!!!!!!
can we just enjoy the fact taht we have two very good young CB's? I mean last time I checked they both play for the Fins
This is going to be good. IIFC Madison and Surtain were both different playing styles but were amazing. I think we have 2 very good corners coming up and has been what we have been missing on defense for a while. Will allen has been nice, but we haven't had that guy next to him. We are now set for the future with these two, with a couple really good nickle and dime backs with culver and jones.
well, they're both giving up deep passes left and right, but vontaes looking better because hes simply WAY more physical than smith. Vontae comes up to the line of scrimmage and delivers hits and smith looks...like a tall cb who used to play wr. I feel bad for smith because his best ability is to defend the jump ball...but any qb with half a brain would know to throw the jump ball anywhere else but smith, so smith will never get a chance to fight against a wr for the ball. But boy did Vontae play that 2pt conversion like an all pro. damn.
Smith had his worse game of the year, but has played better than Davis. davis did blow that one play going for an INT which lead to a jets TD.
I thought it was pretty even. Davis is a great hitter but made a couple of mistakes in coverage. He had that critical illegal contact penalty and he should never have dove on what turned into a long completion. Smith struggles in his tackling but shuts down anything to the outside. I do hate when Smith stays on the outside shoulder in soft coverage and just gives the WR the dig route. It almost looks like he expects inside help. But overall, Sanchez had a a lot of time (too much) and they gave him few targets. IMO our future at CB is bright. I also like how Nate Jones is playing.
So does Ted Ginn but that doesn't stop people from bashing him. I hope they get better. Would be nice to have 2 lockdown corners for the next decade.
What about Gibril Wilson? He bounced back and had a good game today. Put several good licks on Sanchez, came up on the run when needed to, and didnt give up huge plays.
Yeah, Vontae can lay a hit on, can't he!! Both are still raw, and a little rough around the edges, but they make enough plays to show you what is possible. Nobody dominates as a rookie corner, and these guys are playing as well or better than can be expected of rookie corners. As the starters now, both will see virtually everything the rest of the way, including playing against Tom Brady twice. I think in a couple years, they will be as dominant as any tandem!
I thought this thread was gonna be a Davis vs. Smith thread a la the Ricky vs. Ronnie threads. I'm glad everybody appreciates them both.
I had Vontae turning out to be the better corner preseason, and as of now that looks to be the case, i wanna love sean smith but i can't, not with that type of tackling technique. step up player.
Sean Smith needs to start turning around sooner. I've seen several passes get completed where Smith either turns around when the ball is already in the receivers hands or doesn't turn around at all.
To be clear, I didn't start this thread as an attack on either guy. I just thought Davis looked a little better than Smith yesterday. Both made mistakes, but both show a lot of promise. Agreed that they have different styles and bring a different skill set. Hopefully, they compliment each other in that regard. Also, agree that the upcoming game will be a HUGE test for the rooks. Go Phins!
