[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rrhAc_JJ3M"]YouTube - Conan O'Brien Fall on The Tonight Show[/ame] Apparently he suffered a concussion and had to cancel his show that day. Ouch!
When I clicked on this, I thought it was going to be about his declining ratings. Apparently his first run shows now get beat by Letterman. Which sucks because I really do like Conan.
He was distracted at how great Hatcher looked running. Heck I wouldn't have made down the stairs. Well not on my feet that is.
i dont really watch any of the late night shows, but i really dont get what NBC is doing. leno leaves the tonight show to basically do the same thing an hour and a half earlier? and they still have unfunny jimmy fallon doing a show after conan and according to my guide, there is yet another show on after fallon. carson daly still? 4 shows that are basically the same thing?
I've always liked Conan, but with Leno on before him, NBC royally messed up. Carson didn't have deal with Jack Parr being on in prime time before him when he took over, not to mention that he had zero competition, since the Tonight Show was the first show of its kind and unopposed in late night for years. And Leno didn't have Carson splitting his viewership either, although by then he had to contend with competition from Letterman. What NBC is doing is undermining O'Brien. Plus, Letterman is once again at the top of his game after a few off years, and Craig Ferguson's show following Late Night is one of the funniest shows in any time slot. Tough odds for Conan until NBC ends the lame Leno experiment.
And they won't because they will fall back on how cheap it is to produce the Jay Leno Show and so far, his ratings have been fairly strong. The problem is, they didn't want to lose Conan, who would have walked awy from his 12:30 show if he wasn't promised the Tonight Show a while back. So NBC made him a deal where they would force Leno out, or pay Conan some ridiculous penalty money if they decided to keep Leno. As it turned out, Leno was still pounding Letterman into oblivion at the time of his departure, and the execs freaked out, and decided to keep Leno around. Not only does that undermind Conan, but it literally pulls away revenue from the Tonight Show as, you said, the viewers are essentially forced to watch four of the same shows each and every night. Furthermore, you have to worry about Jay getting better guest than the supposed flagship of late night talk shows and try to sell advertising on top of that. What will eventually happen is that Conan will be fired for not bringing in the ratings, Jay will be brought BACK to the Tonight Show and that will be that. Personally, I would have loved to see Conan jump over to Fox and see if he could develop his own show for them over there to compete with both Jay and Letterman. Oh well. I am still holding out hope that Conan will rally, much like he did when he first started and become a force in late night. He is too damned good to not be on the air imo.
What you touched on with guests is a huge thing down the line, too. Used to be a movie star would do the Tonight Show to promote a new flick; or an author a book, etc. It was good to have some competition, because frankly it was only the money-backed projects getting that exposure when Johnny was all alone up there. But now? C'mon...with six of these damn things plus all the daytime shows, you're getting pretty skinny quality in terms of guests. The one plus is that some of the more obscure alternative music acts are getting exposure they otherwise wouldn't with fewer shows, and that's definitely a good thing. What I would do with Tonight and Conan is move the show back to New York. Bring him right back into Letterman's backyard and let them duke it out for guests; he's not a Cali act anyway, he belongs in the hipper and edgier Big Apple.
I prefer old school Conan. "Give me a sword and a straight path to my enemies" - some of the best pulp fiction of the '30s.
Conan will be fine right where he is. I hadn't watched late night television is years but have watched every Tonight Show episode since he started
wow! he smacked the hell out of that enormous cabeza. im surprised he could continue on. i like the guy and his show. and terri does look awesome...
