Henne to become as good as Ryan, Flacco? http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2009/09/henne-to-become-as-good-as-ryan-flacco.html
learning the plays is one thing....executing them in a game situation is a completely different beast
Hey, let's not forget the HORRIBLE start Flacco had. He had like 7 interceptions and no TD's going into the Miami game last year... Henne may have a rough start and come alive like Flacco or who know's, maybe with a full week of practice as the starter maybe he shows what he's made of and lets the Bills have it!
he has a nice full 13 games to do so. no excuses at the end of the season. either the kids got it or he dont.
A good qb makes his team better, so much of what is in this article is just negativity. Saying we have no receivers is bs. Great? Prolly not, but certainly not terrible. Time will tell if our mostly young WR corp will blossom or if we need more help, but as a unit they are relatively good, just no apparent studs or studs to be. "Flacco last season could throw the ball to Derrick Mason, who has seven 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his career. He could throw the ball to Todd Heap, who is a perennial Pro Bowl-caliber tight end." Both of these guys were hurt much of the year, and Heap missed a few games. Mason has had a great career, but is on the downside and is pretty much a possession receiver who isn't going to break a big play hardly ever (isn't that Mando's problem with Bess?), Heap is an injury risk every time on the field who has missed considerable playing time during his career. "Ryan? He could throw the ball to Roddy White, who is better than any receiver on Miami's roster. He could throw the ball to Michael Jenkins, who is better than any receiver on Miami's roster." Both of these guys were considered underachievers until last year, when they finally got a qb who could throw accurately and also downfield. Is that something that could happen here? Certainly. Vick had a great arm, but was poor at getting the ball within reach of the receivers. Penny is very accurate, but could work only the shorter routes consistently. Having a qb who can do both will allow the receivers to use the whole field and make maximum use of their abilities. The point here is, asking Henne to step in and be an instant hit is prolly asking too much, although it sure would be nice, but the receivers most likely won't prevent him from being a good qb. If he plays well, we will be in a position to win games and he will bring his wideout's play up, if not, it doesn't matter who he's trying to throw to.
I really feel like Henne will get the job done this year. I will go out on a limb and say we make the playoff's with him leading the way....
Agreed. And even more difficult when the game plan was put together around Pennington and not Henne. I think we all agree that Henne brings something different to the table than Pennington, so there's going to be different game planning based on who's behind the center.
He has a chance to be as good as Flacco. He's no Ryan though...Ryan was ready from the minute he walked onto the field.
In that draft I had Ryan rated first with Flacco and then Henne close behind. While I felt Ryan was the best prospect I didn't feel he was that much better than the other two in the long term. I would actually rate Flacco as the best long term prospect of the three. I had Henne as the third best both short term and long term. But it really wasn't that big of a margin. So I don't see it as a stretch that Henne could turn out just as good as the other two have. Now it does bear mentioning that neither Flacco nor Ryan were consistently great at the start either. Ryan had a great first game and followed it up with a 29.6 rating in his second game. He had many games where he threw 0 TDs and about a quarter of the time threw more INTs than TDs. Flacco was pretty bad for the first 5 games. He had only one game rated over 80 among those and had 1 TD and 7 INTs after 5 games. So Henne could be just as good as both of those guys and play very bad to start. I felt I should mention that b/c there were some posters who were already claiming Henne sucked after his qtr and a half of play on Sunday.
Prior to Ryan showing up. The article claimed that Ryan had great receivers to lean on when he got there, but they had accomplished little before Matt began chucking the ball to them.
Yes, what I posted was what White did in the season prior to Ryan's arrival. So again, how is 80 catches, 1,200 yards, and 7 TDs underachieving?
he'll have a year as an understudy advantage & a whole year to prove his worth we will know by the end of the year one way or the other this is not the time for anything negative to further damage the team we did not select Ryan or Flacco. it is what it is. we shall see
Flacco started out with like 1 Td and 7 int in the beginning of the season and look at him now. Flacco is now throwing for 300+ a game. He had a good situation and I believe Henne does also. Flacco had the 3 headed monster at runningback with McGahee, Rice, and McClain. Henne has a hot running game right now with Brown and Williams. Thats good news when we are facing the bills who arent doing all that well against the run. Pierre Thomas ran for 100+ this past sunday and I guarantee Brown is a better back than he is. Also, Ginn had his career game against Buffalo, who has two starters missing for this game. I see a good game out of Henne this sunday, and a Win.
Jenkins aside from improved yardage had caught 50 passes before in a season as well. So Ryan did indeed help the WRs performance, IMO, however it's not so significant that you can say his WR corp was underachieving before he got there. But like I said, that's my opinion. The key in Atlanta last year, again IMO, was the running game.
It's definitely been working the last two games. And with a Henne in there, you'd have to think that'll be the case. That and a few long throw attempts to Ginn to help keep 'em honest.
While not spectacular, our WR corps is good enough. It's on Henne now. Ginn, damning recent drops aside, caught almost 800 yards last year. Bess and Cam have shown they can catch a bunch of passes. Our TE is suspect. We've got nothing to lose, a few air it out passes a game will improve our offense so much.
We are all hoping that Henne will be a good QB and he may very well be. The truth is that a good QB will make his receivers look good, effecient and dangerous. Look at all of the receivers that Dan Marino made look really good. And no I am not comparing Henne to Marino. Why do you think Duper and Clayton loved Marino throwing to them so much?
I hope Henne is as good as Ryan, but would be disappointed if he's as good as Flacco....still not sold on that kid.
Well, that strategy worked well for the Ravens last year...the difference is their defense includes the likes of Ed Reed and Ray Lewis, while ours includes Gibril "I don't want to break a nail" Wilson and Channing "I talk more than I play" Crowder.
