Official thread for Classic Rock. My Favorites: The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, The Doors, some weird lookin guy thats my avy
KISS and Van Halen are my two favorites. Without them I wouldn't be into rock or metal. As of lately I've gotten into heavier stuff like Pantera and Dragonforce. But its always nice to hear the classic stuff.
Can't go wrong with any of that. Though I'm not a big fan of Aerosmith. They are too bluesy for me. I know Zeppelin can be very bluesy but when they want to rock I think they are heavier than Aerosmith has ever though of being.
I actually enjoy aerosmith and zeppelin when they are more bluesy then anything. Can't stand aerosmith that much though. Favorites: jimi, deep purple, the who, bob marley, peter tosh I'm actually mostly into classic rock except for metallica, sepultura and pantera.............
I've been listening to a lot of Pantera lately. Domination is the most intense song I've heard maybe aside from Killing in the Name of by Rage. I know rock came from the blues but I just can't get into the blues. Eddie Van Halen could go all bluesy and I doubt I would like it.
Well I am a blues fan so to each their own I suppose. Planet caravan by pantera.......... far beyond driven is my favorite album from pantera.
In my area on friday nights station KZOZ 93.3 in San Luis Obispo, CA does a Pink Floyd hour, called the Friday Night Floyd Fix at 11:00 PM Pacific time on Friday nights.
That sounds cool. Floyd is another band I've recently got into. It took me a while because I just didn't get it. But I saw Dream Theater do a cover of Time and that solo hooked me. It was kind of the same thing with Pantera. I heard the solo to Cemetery Gates and I had to hear more. I don't really have a favorite record of theirs since I just went out and bought their greatest hits. Though Cowboys from Hell has a lot of good songs on it.
boston, thin lizzy, ac/dc, guns n roses are my fave rock bands metal wise sabbath, priest, maiden, metallica(pre black album) slayer, pantera etc as for my fave pantera album it has to be far beyond driven that is ****ing intense
If you want an intense song listen to "Walk" by Pantera. Its on the Far Beyond Driven CD. If you ever need a kick in the butt to get yourself going on a given day this is the song to listen to.
As far as Classic Rock I listen to: Nothing beats Jimi Hendrix Metallica, GnR, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Pantera, Soundgarden, Greatful Dead, Black Sabbath I guess its still too early to call Pearl Jam classic rock but they are my favorite band so I cant leave them out of this discussion. I dont quite consider RATM classic rock since they have more a funky rap/rock sound in a lot of their songs. Love them but their just their own little genre.
Other favs of mine include G & R, Tom Petty, and Aerosmith I saw Aerosmith a few years ago and they played for almost 3 hrs. Amazing show, I'd highly recommend seeing them if you get the chance even if your not a huge fan. I'd start a modern rock thread but IMO the majority of new rock music is f ing terrible. The only bands from my generation (im 24) that are still together and making good music for me are the Red Hot Chili Peppers (my fav band in general), and sometimes the Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver (i really miss STP and G & R tho).
Walk is definitely a good song. Its such a simple riff. Dime had great tone, which is something all great guitarists have. The solo is pretty cool too. It has that fake echo thing that I don't think I've seen before.
Totally agree. You say classic rock, and automatically Jimi just pops in my head. I would have loved to have heard him play live but that was long before my time....
If you like that try Drag the waters on The Great Southern Trendkill and 5 Minutes Alone on Far Beyond Driven. Kick butt songs
we are very much on the same page here. I definitely miss STP and GnR. I saw STP live after they released Core and just before they released Purple and it was an outstanding show. I watched it from my friends rooftop overlooking the Jones Beach Ampitheater on Long Island during the summer of 93-94. RHCP is a good show as well but a few of their songs make me say "What the deuce?". And some of their songs like The Zephyr Song just blow me away. I would recommend the Foo Fighters to anyone who likes good music.
RHCP definitely goes all over the place, which is fine as long as you have some kind of consistancy which I think they do. Their new double CD is def worth picking up. I actually saw RHCP and STP together with Fishbone in 99 right after Californication came out. Amaaaazing show. Hands down the best live show Ive ever scene. O yea, Jimi has a double CD. One disc is studio and the other is live stuff. Thats def solid too.
Sorry doc I disagree in terms of metal it is very classic and pioneering. Dimebag's skills alone put them over the top IMO.
Well, with their major label debut not coming until 1990, I can't help thinking it's too soon to call them classic rock.
From Wikipedia: "Classic rock was originally conceived as a radio station programming format which evolved from the album oriented rock (AOR) format in the early-1980s. In the United States, this rock music format now features a large but limited playlist of songs ranging from the early-1960s through the early-1980s with more emphasis on the earlier hits by artists associated with the loosely-defined "classic rock era".
BTW ... I don't argue that Pantera was heavily influential. I think the "Cemetery Gates" guitar riffs is one of the best ever. I'm just debating labelling here.
Pantera certainly isn't classic rock like AC/DC and Zeppelin are. But they aren't all that modern either. Most classic rock stations I've heard are pretty soft, meaning the heaviest they go is probably Metallica cerca the Black Album. So I doubt Pantera gets much or any play on those stations. They probably only get play on modern metal stations that do it as kind of a classic metal thing. Well, that's how Sirius does it. I've never heard a metal station outside of Sirius.
Gee you had a much longer show from Aerosmith, than I got to see last July in Paso Robles, CA. They played about an hour forty that Thursday night. They did not do "Janie Got a Gun" that night. Of course it was kind of jolting when Stephen Tyler added a line to the "Love in an Elevator" song with a graphic and foul description of anal activity. Also in the outdoor arena that night there was this foul smell of smoke in the air (then again a certain tailback on the team would love the smell).
wow you got jipped my friend or I just happened to catch the right show. they actually took 2 5 min breaks in between and had two seperate stages. that sweet smell seems to be in the air at every concert.. hmm a mystery why my eyes look like this afterwards :
I saw Aerosmith twice when they toured with KISS a few years ago. Both bands played about a hour and a half set. Steven Tyler was impressive but the rest of the band didn't do much for me. For me there is nothing like being at a KISS show when everything goes black and you hear, "Alright Memphis. You wanted the best. You got the best. The hottest band in the world, KISS." Then you hear the opening to Detroit Rock City and when they hit the first power chord the bombs go off and the curtain drops while they are lowered in from the ceiling. I got goosebumps just describing that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLus5pdy9PE&feature=related
The Who, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Eric Clapton some of my favorites. I'm also a fan of bands like Journey and Styx if they count, which I think they would. Wish I could see Pink Floyd in concert.
Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin Rush Eagles Steve Miller Band Eric Clapton Cream Jimi Hendrix Experience Free Kansas Blue Oyster Cult Boston Journey CCR Van Halen Genesis(and Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel Solos) Wings(i like better than Beatles) John Lennon Tom Petty The Police King Crimson The Doors Santana ..to name a few.
