Oakland should be banned from making any trades. New England abosultely raped them here IMO. Not only is Seymour in the final year of his contract, but a first round pick!!! First Moss goes there for a 4th, now this. Pathetic.

I like this trade. Their defense just got a lot weaker. For the past several years their front 3 has been one of the best Last year Seymour accounted for 8 sacks and 35 tackles.
McKenzie out. Crable out. Vrabel gone. Bruschi gone. Now Seymour is gone.

On the one hand I can agree. But at the same time I can't help but think it may not be enough to help them stay on top. An awful lot of key positions are filled by old players. Springs, Galloway, Faulk, Thomas, even Moss, etc. Add to the fact that they have missed on a lot of draft picks in recent years. I say the ship is sinking. If we can have a good year then we can hasten it.

Thomas is their only legitimate pass rusher now.

I think this opens up the door for Myron Pryor, who was brought up in the Club Level and I agree with that thought. Pryor can do very well against single blocks and I think we will see several different fronts from NE. Probably more than ever before. Now what they'll do is have Burgess go back to end, Myron Pryor sit at the under tackle spot, have Wilfork eat up blockers and then have another good end opposite of Burgess. A lot of 4-3 looks this year. I don't think they lost too much with Seymour, other then probably leadership. He's been nicked up quite a bit and even though he played well last year as a 1 gap end, will he be able to reproduce those stats again? I doubt it. They got rid of him at the right time IMO.

In Oakland's case, they gave up too much but it could work out well. Seymour's got versatility, he can play the five technique or one technique inside. They need to find a way to keep him in one piece though. What I wonder most is how this helps their run defense.

We've got to have something Oakland wants. Maybe Hilliard for a 1st or 2nd rounder?

He's been injured and unwilling to play at a high level consistently because Raiders wouldn't give into his contract demands. That could change in NE because Bill usually gets the best out of players.

Seymour didnt have double digit sacks either.

IMO their defense was already going to be the weak point in their team, but Seymour wont hurt. They drafted Pryor and Brace, still have Wilfork and Warren and brought in Burgess.

They will use alot more 4 man fronts to cover their depleted linebacking corps, and hope their revamped secondary can hold together. All they will aim for is to keep opponents under 17 PPG imo, as they will have faith their offense can put up at least that much.

*edit - For Oakland this makes absolutely no sense. They arent contending, period. They gain a guy whos going into FA after this year, has been banged up, and even if he resigns will likely only have 2-3 years beyond this at a highish level. Thats worth a top of the line rookie? I dont get it at all - why the hell not just pay Burgess and keep your first? This organization is a ****ing massive mess.

Waching golf on NBC, they just mentioned that Seymour may not show in Oakland and that he is very upset about this. NBC also mentioned PFT, for whatever that is worth.

I'm not saying it's true, but just reporting what I "heard" on NBC.

I think you mean IF. It's not a foregone conclusion that it'll be the first overall. 1 in 32 chance.
If you care to, go look at NE's recent drafts and consider whether or not they really do draft better than everyone else.
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/nwe.htm

I think their success through the draft is way overblown. Forget potential and look at results.

I agree their drafting history is average, but the way they stockpile picks they still only need to hit about half to make their drafts look great.

And while its not a forgone conclusion the Raiders will be the worst team, its certainly far more likely imo than them picking outside the top 16 that year.

geez... i am surprised they didn't get Bruschi to put off his retirement until they could get the Raiders to trade them another first round pick for him.

as a fantasy football commish, i wouldn't ok a trade this lopsided, but the league will. :)

That's my point. They're not even hitting on half.
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/nwe.htm
I want to encourage you to follow the above link and look over their draft picks. Then think about how many of those names are making an impact, either in NE or elsewhere.
    Here's what I saw.
    1. From 2000 through 2008 the Pats had a total of 77 draft picks.
    2. As of today 18 of those draft picks are still Patriots.
After Brady, Light, Mankins, Koppen, Warren, Wilfork, Kaczur, Gostkowski and Mayo who is making an impact with that team?
    3. As of today 34 of the 77 are still playing on any team in the NFL.
Neither of those numbers is close to 50%.
Again their draft prowess is over rated, IMO.
What they have been successful at is luring FAs with the promise of fame, fortune and a Super Bowl ring. IMO that too is fading.
This is the 09 season. The last SB win for them was after the 04 season. The more dust gathers on those trophies the more they look like just another playoff contender. In other words they're fast becoming no more attractive than other well run teams. The Steelers, Colts, Titans Chargers, Dolphins, Ravens all are also playoff contenders.
Overall I still maintain their demise is imminent. Much of their homegrown talent has either retired or gotten a bit slower. The avg FA was old to begin with when they arrived. But they haven't been successful at restocking through the draft.
Something else. Isn't Belichick considered a defensive genius?
During this above mentioned time period, the Pats have drafted 10 LBs. TEN!
After Mayo who have you got?
    Banta-Cain
Shawn Crable - out for the season again
Tyrone McKenzie - also out for the season.

I'm watching to see how this unfolds......Seymour has got to be irate over this.

I understand it's a business but in the long run, it may put a dent in that chemistry the Pats have had. Loyalty goes both ways..

Soooo, effectively he could miss a couple of games, then show up and try to learn the defense?

I am certainly glad I am not a Raiders fan

Could see him coming out and dogging it for them though. I still bet Snyder or someone would pay big money.

This trade was mind bogglingly awful for the Raiders.

And after seeing the Pats D.......I can't see letting this guy walk.

If he is 3 years removed from high school then he can enter. Larry Fitzgerald was a sophmore when he entered the draft. He just happen to go a military school I believe for a year.

What PerfectTeam said. He can enter in the 2011 Draft.

He's expected to be one of the best QBs in 2011. Top overall draft pick. I doubt the Raiders finish out of the top 10, so this gives the Pats a chance to draft their franchise QB.
