AUBURN, Calif. -- A fast-moving wildfire burned dozens of homes and scorched hundreds of acres Sunday afternoon in Placer County, prompting Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger to declare a state of emergency.

The fire started on Highway 49 at Rock Creek Circle in North Auburn at about 2:20 p.m. It destroyed at least 30 homes and about 275 acres, and Cal Fire said it was about 50 percent contained by 8 p.m.

Please say a prayer for the families and pets.

I have a friend who just moved from Berkeley to Pasadena and he said he could see flames out in the distance. I would have a hard time living in Cali and always dealing with fire, mud slides, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

We came very close a few days ago here to having to evacuate. The Rancho Palos Verdes fire was bad. Great thing they got it under control, saw the flames rise from our balcony and watched the water drops. Didnt sleep at all that night. Had the animals and important papers, pictures ready to go. First time a fire like that started that close here in 30 years they said.A very big horse ranch was up there and a huge trail with lots of animals that live there were in the area.

they just said two firefighters have lost their lives fighting those fires down south.

apparently, the truck they were riding in rolled down a mountain side.

I'm so sorry that people are losing their homes, and now there has been loss of life among the firefighters.

    :pity:

God has a special place in store for these two, I assure you that.

Hate to see wildfires. There was about 1 every dacade when I was a wee lad. There was a fire in 2001 that all but completely destroyed the beautiful Jemez Mountains I grew up in. Completely evacuated the town and even all the High Security buildings at the labs.

Anytime I go back, the beautiful Mountain landscape I grew up with is nothing more than Rocks with bare toothpicks sticking up now. Completely filled the reservoir with silt.....really really sad.

i lived in california for 59 years and i consider myself lucky to get out with everything i had accumulated. sooner or later one disaster or another will affect you, and its not an if, the question is when.

its not so much the mudslides that create the havoc, its the morons that move out there think they have to build on the side of a hill because there is a good view. for instance, take anaheim hills. geologists warned people that the ground was unstable but they built anyway, then they are suprised when a heavy rain puts their house at the bottom of said hill.

most of the homes that are destroyed by fire are owned by people too lazy to get outside and clear the brush away from their property. these are very fast moving fires and just burn surface vegetation, a firebreak does wonders, even if it jumps a road. if there is nothing to burn around your house, chances are you will be safe.

This photo, taken from 40 miles away shows the massive column of smoke being created by the Station Fire. This was near sunset and it's "only" the West flank of the fire. Photo was taken from the San Fernando Valley in the northern part of Los Angeles.

Lived here 32 years, really have only dealt with a fire just once. And then not really. Packed some stuff, was going to leave, by my parents said hell no, so I stayed to watch out for them. Fire never really came close heh. Just a bunch of ash every 6 years or so. No fires, mud slides, earthquakes have been little shakers (although a big one will hit soon enough). So 32 years, one little almost evacuation, and all this sunshine, beach and women? Bring up taxes then we can talk! :pointlol:

Oh, and keep in mind fires here are mostly due to environmental rules. Yeah I'm not going to get pofo on anyone, but want to point out that Mexico doesn't have these problems because they let fires burn. Yeah insert your joke, but they don't fight fires, they just let them burn until they stop. Oooh scary, but no, the fires are always smaller than they are here. (something we cannot do due to environmental rules).

We're so good at putting out fires that there are literally decades and decades of built up fuel everywhere. They eventually gotta go. Environmental rules come into play because there have been attempts here in San Diego to clear brush around homes but they have been blocked, and even fined and sued.

never had to evacuate either.Live in los alamitos btw 2 miles from the beach. Every major fire that ever happens here in so cal is not in the basin. Its out on the outskirts except for the yorba linda fire. This particular location hasnt burn in 40yrs so there alot of dry brush. 100k acres and 50 homes/cabins just show that their aint much in these mountain areas.

i went thru that northridge quake and the whittier narrows quake and they weren't anywhere's near as bad as the long beach quake in 33 or the one in oakland in 89 quake. i think its being set up for another big one for another one right now. there have been 3 major quakes, from 4.3 to 5.1 in the last 3 days that occurred off the coast of oregon. a scientist believes a big one will hit sometime this year. 2009

My girlfriend actually works for Farmers catastrophe group (think of adjusters that only go out when a Cat is called, fires, major storms, hurricanes etc.), and was working that Yorba Linda fire for 6 weeks, then the Sylmar fire for another 3. Mostly smoke damage, only a couple burnt items here and there.

I live in Solana Beach about 1 mile from the beach, so the fire has to go through quite a bit to get there
