Rumors of big announcements from Sony Today

Just give me that 60GB full Backwards Compatible model and that's it.

However with what those things are going for on ebay you could sell it and have enough to get a slim and get a game or so.

Dumbest thing I ever heard. Everyone knows people buy a PS3 to play PS3 games but it's nice to have the option to put in a PS2 game and play. Plus the backwards compatibility would be huge to get PS2 folks to upgrade especially now that the PS3 is a price most people think is fair or even a steal. Idiotic comments like that and that mindset is why Sony is in third right now.

I believe that is Sony's intended motive and especially since others like Stitches and Get Up and Go are willing to buy a slim making it their second PS3 purchase that Sony has to feel they may have finally made that move they needed.

The September NPD report will be telling if Sony will turn it around with this or if it is too late...it will be fun.

Typically from what I see on ebay...yes. The prices range generally $300 to $400 and sometimes over.

Its decent, but keep in mind that better Blu-Ray players can be had for under $200 direct from Amazon like the Panasonic BD60.

The more I think about it though it really is a decent value if you aren't hung up on Microsoft exclusives and an almost exclusive Halo player.... Which I am.

Edit-And its about dam time, I think its about a year too late though.

 

That makes the ps3 look like more of a steal. Unless that player has a hard drive, wi fi and the ability to play games from a disc and off of the net.

Too late for what? If this move means they make a profit they did it at the right time. This isn't a huge battle between 360 versus ps3. This is a battle between making a profit and making a loss.

 

The battle between making a profit and a loss has a lot to do with game sales, which has a lot to do with how many people have been able to purchase a console. Its industry standard to sell consoles at a loss and make it back on games, yet the PS3 sat at $399 in a bad economy and watched the 360 establish market dominance in the HD console battle, and let them get so far ahead that I don't think the PS3 will ever catch up.

Which long term is going to cost Sony a lot of money. What will make it even worse is if Microsoft really decides to stick the fork to them and gives the 360 a $50 price drop, which they may be able to do because they know they are about to make a pile of money off of ODST.

And I agree the PS3 has value at $299, it really does, just pointing out that the argument of "Its the best, cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market is no longer even close to being valid.

 

That was pretty much a given after the 360 got a year head start.


And I haven't seen anyone make the "cheapest blu ray player" on the market argument in a while.

 

That is not industry standard. Nintendo's standard has always been to make a profit off their machines.

Also that way only works when you have the money to take the loses. Sony did not.

Microsoft is ahead for sure. However just last year was the first time they have turned a profit with their gaming division. The economy hasn't hit them as hard as Sony, however if things keep on going like this for a few years, you might see Microsoft selling off a lot of their game divisions. They are already making tons of cuts. I do not know if Microsoft can really afford another $50 price cut. Especially after all the money they lost in the RRoD debacle. Honestly I think they are going to hedge their bet on project Natal selling more Xboxes. Unless Sony starts selling 500,000 ps3s.

It may not be the cheapest Blu Ray player anymore. It is still by far the best value.

saw this in the local business section pf the paper, probably old news to y'all but figured i would post it.

i will probably make the jump finally. then be prepared for lots of dumb online gaming questions from me, the over the hill guy.

PS3 120 gig consoles dropping to $299 immediately. and in late september they are coming out with a smaller, sleeker model that will also retail at $299. the 180g will drop to $399.
