Aside from low-speeds, I don't see the advantage?

If they are indeed just trying to achieve low-speed advantage, doesn't the A-10 Warthog make more sense?

Time on target, my man, time on target. You just can't beat a prop job for close air support and time over target. 11/2 hours versus 4 to 5 hours, they keep the bad guys at bay!!:wink2:

The A-10 was designed as the main tank killer and in that roll is the best we have where used; Europe and the Middle East but you get into jungles or mountainous areas and the A-1 types rule.

Man I love those old birds!

This is nothing but S.A.M. bait.

Im sorry but if you want to go back in time, just use a newer revitalized F4 Phantom.

Could these propeller driven aircraft with such a low heat signature, along with counter-measures, actually render a SAM (or similar) useless?

Once again, I direct you towards MALD.

Go do a google for it. Global Security.org has a very nice write up

Wow, a 10ft long minature jet with a 5ft wing span? And cost effective too!(unless my mind is just numb over Obama's budget )

A couple of these may buy some serious time, and I'm wondering about the manuverability of these little guys. A heatseeker may very well look like

    Out-running a SAM isn't really the idea I don't think
The idea, from what I have read, is to decoy the SAMS away from friendly forces, and of course, as soon as the SAMS "Light-up" the Decoy, their (The SAMS) location of launch becomes VERY visible

I was just hoping they could buy time by dealing with multiple launches. But yeah, I see your point perfectly.

Of the 224 A-1's, of all types, lost only 5 were downed by S.A.M.s and I would guess those were Sandy's helping the pull pilots out of NV while flying high cover over the Helo's. JMO

These new planes the SEALS want wouldn't ever be in that position. Stingers and ground fire would be their worry. So to answer your question YES they would. JMO.:wink2:

geeze.. maybe y'all think the Seals are stupid or something? Like maybe they didn't think that someone might have a stinger?? If they loaded it with electronics, I'm sure they didn't neglect it's safety and survivability. Have you ever known those boys to half azz anything?

SAM don't concern me as much with this highly technologically advanced machinery...however the enemy can potentially go "back to the future" also.

Although I certainly put enough faith into the NAVY...especially the SEAL teams to have enough wherewithal and understanding-keeping the capabilities of their opponents under full consideration.

Putting all the electronics on these things will cost money but maintenance costs for the actual plane would be very low wouldn't it?

This makes a lot of sense to me.
