Yes yes yes yes yes Welcome to the next coming folks. This kid is going to be a real difference maker kids
Good compromise. I'd MUCH rather concede a greater increase to the signing bonus than to the guaranteed money, since Smith is unlikely to wash out in his first year anyways, but you'd hate to be three years in with a guy like him and still stuck for guaranteed money that was higher cap hit if you cut him (and still had to pay him). They learned from the Wilford mistake. lol. Less guaranteed. More incentives and bonus.
Pat White will be the last to sign, imo. How do you slot a unqiue player like him? It ain't starting QB money if he's a Wildcat guy. He could also run for a lot of yards, so do you incentivize THAT as much as passing? What about paying him as a QB then him shifting to WR eventually? Maybe that oughta be figured in as a possibility when structuring the contract. I dunno. He's a tricky one. I think you just start with offering him 6-8% more than the guy slotted at pick #44 last year (Forte, RB - Chicago). That'd be a good deal for us. The agent's counter argument is, yeah, but this guy will throw, run AND catch so he's worth more. He's also more unique. Who else can do what he does for you? No one. Tricky stuff. Me personally, I think most contracts should be heavily performance based with lower base salaries and lots of incentives and escalators.
Yeah, we sign Walden off the street to be a Special Teams ace and pay him league minimum (or close to it) while alongside him Jason Allen gets paid over a million a year to play at the same level. Bad economics. I think Jason has to show good value in nickel/dime this year or he'll get cut. Here is our overpriced Special Teams guy: 8/7/2006: Signed a six-year, $24 million contract. The deal contains $7.8 million guaranteed, including a $4.6 million second-year option bonus. Another $6 million is available through escalators. 2009: $1.31 million, 2010: $1.27 million, 2011: $980,000 (Voidable Year), 2012: Free Agent. That 1.31 million dollar base probably goes up due to tackle bonuses and games played etc.
yay. we got our size now at CB, to maybe help lessen the impact of Randy Moss and TO. i really like Sean Smith and i think that he has a lot to bring to Miami. hopefully i am not wrong.
I thought the same thing bpk. What (or maybe lack thereof) position do you slot him into for the sake of a starting point in negotiating a contract? A second round...?? Maybe the smartest thing to do is to point to his status as a QB who was picked in the second round and just go with that. After all they've maintained all along that White is going to play QB. That he can run could be glossed over since their are no bonus points for a scrambling QB. On the other hand it does seem fair to assume that he's going to be doing more than just lining up at QB for a few plays now and then. And if we can safely assume that much, then it stands to reason he and his agent are doing the same thing. As to the original topic; I love that Smith is signed. IMO he's the guy who is probably going to end up opposite Will Allen. I just think they're really hoping he'll be ready to match up with Moss and Owens and other big physical WRs.
Just judging how much money/cap space has been wasted on him so far, i can't imagine he'll be around after this year. This is probably his last year to prove he can play or compete at S or CB. If he can't he can be replaced with a much better player at 1/10 the cost. You totally highlighted the bad economics of his deal. Once this team starts filling most of the holes which it has started to do, we could see money needed for FA acquisitions over the next 3 years or so, and having someone contribute as little as he does for his contract would make him on the top of the disposable list. Especially when there's an attractive piece to be acquired out there. Basically say for instance they did want Anquan or someone similar. And they could "Just about" afford him. Clear J. Allen and all of a sudden you "can" afford the new player. For a SP/Nickle corner you should not be getting that much of a contract, not to mention all the money he has recieved so far without doing really anything. Yes i know he has shown flashes here and there, but the odd flash isn't considered a good ROI. The flashes need to be consistent. He's got one year left in a miami uni imo. His opportunities are dwindling as we speak with the 2 new kids in the backfield, further increasing the odds he will never show us what he can do. thanks for his salary breakdown bpk. interesting stuff. I don't know the details of LB Reggie Tobor, but i think he's in the 3 million range. Looking at his contributions at that price tag, he could actually be ahead of Jason the disposable list. Of course Wilford's has been brutal too. I fully expect this FO to clean house on area's they aren't getting value and replace that money with players who will make impactual, consistent contribuitons. But hey the turnaround doesn't happen in one year haha.
