I don't think anyone is denying it. Just pointing out that his popularity is the product of huge marketing forces. Add competent songwriter to the list of things I credited him with.

Actually this is a breaking news thread.

Why not mourn the thousands that die everyday then? How about American Soldiers that die over Iraq giving up some of their freedoms to protect our own?

I'm sorry I don't know Michael Jackson personally so I'm not grieving him like I would a friend or relative.

Plus the whole Child molestation thing cant be put off to the side like some of you do.

How am I disrespecting the dead? I can't speak for everyone here. I was just pointing out you sure are defending him like he was your brother.

I sure as hell hope Michael Jackson would do the same for you if he was still alive and kicking.

I just think some of you are taking this waaaaaaaaaaaay to hard.

i never said you were disrespecting......you quoted my post saying it was uncalled for to disrespect the dead and used a terrible example comparing not showing respect to the fallen soldiers.....i asked how they are the same? what does any other deaths have to do with this?

Nothing upsets people like telling them how much they should feel about something. I remember growing up and being angry at my mother because she would always discount how important football was to me.

You maybe different, however to discount someone else for feeling for something more than you will always cause people to be upset.

Talent is neither sufficient nor necessary to get exposure. Further, lost the ambition for that stuff 25 years ago.

I honestly dont understand why its hit me so hard...Im an admitted and proud Metalhead but I guess my dirty little secret in HS etc was that I would NEVER turn off an MJ song when I heard it...even though I dont own a single album im pretty sure ill have an Ipod full very soon.

Then you really shouldn't criticize someone who had the fortitude to stick to his guns and continue his career.

And no, it's not sufficient or necessary. But more often than not, true talent is rewarded. Maybe not on as grand a scale as Michael was, but it DOES get noticed.

Not patting myself on the back, but my band in 1984 did a demo tape recorded in a friend's basement. A crappy little low-quality recording done just to try and get the band signed.

Last year I received an email from a magazine in Greece. Apparently, that demo was traded all over the world in the metal underground, and there was sufficient enough interest for him to not only review a 24 year old tape, but interview me about it as well. Didn't make me rich, didn't make me famous, but the talent was recognized.

If I had a dime for every guy who told me he was a better or equal to songwriter than (insert name here), I wouldn't need to sell any records.

    wow, congratulations. That is amazing.

Myself I am not really into the music scene, however my roommates are in a band and I like going to their shows. There are some seriously amazingly talented people who will not get famous. I think anytime someone gets recognized I think it is amazing.

I couldn't imagine the pride I would have if I did something and someone I didn't know and especially in another country enjoyed my work.

Yeah, we recorded some stuff in 83-84 as well. Had the few people who ever heard it blown away by its innovative harmonies set against straight 4 pop background. We were told it was as abrupt and unique a sound as REM was with its first album. So what?

MJ never had a family to take care of or a real job, so he had the luxury of "fortitude".

Exactly. That's my point. It takes the good fortune of having someone with a fortune to promote you. Talent helps, but is neither necessary, nor sufficient.

It takes promotion or enough people to enjoy your work to spread it around.

I am into geekier stuff like McChris and Johnathan Coulton and they have their fame from grass roots promotion. It is easier now with the internet. It also does add to the difficulty since now there is a flood of people.

I do not know what it takes to be famous. Watching 1 hit wonders in the 80s it really shows that the stars have to allign in the right ways. Some people up there are not talented at all and just got lucky. Others were super talented and just could only get one hit. Even with all the promotion and the talent they did not get a second hit.

He also was forced into music by his overbearing and abusive father looking for a meal ticket....who told him he was ugly because his nose was too big....that didnt really have any effect on him now did it .

Brother...all due respect, and I mean this well....but quit while you're ahead.

You're coming across as a bitter failed musician right now.

There's an old saying, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, criticize."

Face it, not only did Michael have the promotion and backing, he had more talent than either you or I. The words under your screen name...good advice.

    Yep.

Imagine what a tormented life. I'd love to be that rich but never at the cost he paid. And what his kids are going through now. And what they will go through when the fight for what ever assets he has left begins. I have never understood why tearing people down is so popular in our culture.

Yeah, I'm sure it did come across that way. He could dance better than I every could hope to and he had far more stage presence. Yes, he had more talent in those areas and developed it keenly. Consumate performer.

Please note, however, revelation of my musical expereinces came only in response to goading by you as to how many songs I'd written and, then your disclosure of your own musical experiences.

Can you imagine being a singer from the time your five on? I think alot of his child like behavior later in life was due to the fact that he never got to be a real kid.

he didn't have a childhood and he did try to live it through kids. his head was totally messed up by his father. i haven't read his whole bio but from what i have read that his father used to constantly make fun of his wide nose, thus a whole lot of self plastic surgery. by the time he had enough money and doctors were brought in he had screwed it up so bad they couldn't do anything for his nose.

It's all good bro, my comment didn't come from you revealing what you've done, but from just the way you really kind of attacked him.

    Like I said...it's all good.

That's the entire point... people don't understand Michael, so to judge him based on what you've read through the media is pointless.

he was found NOT GUILTY by 12 jurors. the biggest piece of evidence going was the mother tried to shake down jackson for 20mil before she went to the authorities. she was asked to pack up her stuff and get out. if i tried to sue for my kid, if i thought a wrong had been done to him, i sure wouldn't accept money. if something had taken place, she would have won and knowing jacksons wealth, would have gotten more than 20mil.

lol Its because he was Michael ****ING JACKSON.

Of course he wasn't going to get convicted he was famous.

I can't believe you people cant see that famous people get special treatment with the law.

But I believe this thread should be locked. Nothing good is coming from it plus we all know he passed on so why have a breaking news thread still going?

i think he was disturbed, i also think he was trying to recreate a childhood he didn't have. he actually might have SLEPT with a child or two, but i don't think there was any physical contact. he loved kids innocence, thanks to his father, he never had.
