call 1-800-4myxbox. they'll ask for your serial number on the back of the system. They'll tell you it it's under warranty. If it is, you'll have to print out a label and find a box for it to fit in well. then send it out, should get it back in 2 weeks.

You can do it online if you want. xbox.com go to customer service, etc etc.

    They do.

What happens if I'm not under warranty?

Lets see I first bought the Xbox 360 when Madden 07 came out. I then bought the 1 year warranty or was it 2? I had to return that one because it scratched my games so I sent that one away and got a new one back when the Halo 3 beta was going on. Then Microsoft extended all warranty's by 1 or 2 years? I should be good to go right?

they actually dont send you the box anymore. they just stopped doing that recently.

they extended the warranty for RROD for 3 years. i think you should be fine, but you never know.

if you're out of warranty, check out craig's list. there's people who will fix it for around 50, or replace the motherboard for a little bit more.

    Why's it lame?

Their warranty is in line with pretty much all other consumer electronics in their price range. And that's not even counting the RRoD warranty extension.

Paying when out of warranty is a normal thing.

The box is an easy fix man lol. Just take it to UPS with the printed off label they e-mail you... and they'll box it for you. You're out in five minutes. Simple as that.

Having a system that I know will be dead in a few years is lame too.

Or does the RROD fix prevent it from happening again?

Cost me like 6 or 7 bucks... Really not an issue IMO. I was getting it fixed for free and shipped back for free... Basically like getting my 360 fixed for 6 or 7 bucks...

Microsoft does their best to please the customers and the least people can do is get their own box.

    ahem....WHAT!?

yes they have decent customer service but it shouldn't break in the first place. it is, or at least was, a $400 system.

Honest to god, i think the reason they stopped sending the boxes out is because they assumed everyone already has one from the first or second time they got the RROD. I know i still have two of mine.

Funny true story. I got my first RRoD before the warranty was extended. I was told I had to pay $150 to fix it. I was FURIOUS. I asked for managers and higher ups. NOTHING. They weren't budging My buddy did a lot of work on old Xbox's. He suggested the swap idea (buying one cash at Walmart, swapping the insides, and returning it for cash)... So I gave my buddy $50 if he do the deed for me. He did. When assembling my new 360 fresh from Walmart he says, "While we have it open, you want me to flash the drive? You can play burned games" So I'm thinking, why not? Microsoft just told me to **** myself.

So i got my 36o modded for the first time ONLY because they wouldn't fix my RRoD. Not one month later, they extended the warranty to make it free. Too late... Like Combat in Halo, Mor has Evolved.

    Anyone dig that line?

How technically savvy are you? It's is VERY easy to open a 360. One torx screw driver and a sharp knife is all you need. Look it up. Walmart or Target swap bro. Return it for cash. Tell them you bought it for your brother's birthday and when you were opening it to set it up you found out your mom already got the bastard one. He'll look through the box and give you the cash back. Win.

I think they stopped sending boxes is because they shouldn't have to. Just buy a box yourself, people are just lazy.

They extended their warranty for everyone and they could have just said "ohhh too bad, deal with it." but they didn't.

From a technology standpoint, they cannot predict the future... they could not predict it's life expectancy. Should it have lasted longer than what it did for some people? Yes. But it's technology. It is what it is.

I just don't feel pity for those who have gotten the RROD. I've gotten it myself and I sent it in... had no problems other than being completely new to the whole "sending something in" world. Technology breaks, deal with it. Microsoft extended their warranty for everyone for 3 years. They sent people a freakin' box so you would have to pay ZERO dollars for the longest time. Do they need to hold customers hands too?

People pay thousands of dollars for a car that eventually goes to **** in ten years... no one complains about that. I just don't think Microsoft can please everyone is all.

Microsoft did not choose to extend the warranty to be nice, they really had no choice since EVERY console will die due to defect. Technology does break but this is not random. I'll get mine fixed but I'm moving on to something else instead dropping my hard earned cash on games for a system on constant life support.

...And many cars do last longer than 10 years, just not american made ones.

I know it wasn't random as they would have last a lot of faithful customers if they would have just gave the consumers the finger. However I'm just saying... too many people expect modern technology to be invincible.

No way a new console comes out for another 5 years, IMO.

They'll milk out the 360 as long as they possibly can... same with Sony and the PS3.

invincbile? no. But anyone who buys a 360, buys it knowing its going to die. it's not a matter of if, but when. I mean it's possible something could happen to my ps3 or my wii, i know this. But even after 3 RRODs, i know my 360s not done breaking down on me. With the 360 its not about possibility, it's about inevitability.

And of course we have to deal with it cause it has the biggest and best library of games this generation. The fact that it's just a 3 year warranty kind of annoys me. Cause im sure mine will be out of warranty soon.

Well it seems 360's have a lifespan of 3-4 years. I'm not sure how the new chip 360's are compared but it just seems like it has a lifespan.

how much is plenty out of +100 million units though? And the same pretty much goes for the wii. There's literally twice as many wiis as there are 360s and the number of problems with them is a mere fraction compared to 360s fail rate (which before the elite was a rumored 80%)

I like the 360 the most out of the 3, im a self-proclaimed achievement whore.

but it's a piece of crap hardware from a reliability point.

I never said it wasn't I was just questioning how you said consoles didn't break until this generation, yet listed the wii ad ps2 when each one had/has problems.

Lame it is! They told me to find my own box back in december when mine died for the second time. I told them to go screw themselves and that they are sending me one. Its not my fault they cant/wont fix the problem for good. Plus it was the second time it happened, first time they sent a box... As far as I was concerned I wasnt going out of my way to get it repaired. Sure enough, a day or so later a box arrived and that was that.
