That Berenger pic that Debby posted in the baseball movie thread reminded me of one of my favorite genre of moves, Vietnam war flicks. Between the two, would you go with Kubrick's epic 'Full Metal Jacket' or Stone's classic, 'Platoon'?
Real tough call here. Platoon has 3 of my all time favorite actors, but have to go with: "Private Pyle, what the **** are you doing in my latrine. What is your MAJOR malfunction numb-nuts" Also love Lee Ermey in the Roll-Call series he did. Took me a few to figure out where I had seen him before
Full Metal Jacket here. "I'll bet you're the kind of guy that would **** a person in the *** and not even have the goddam common courtesy to give him a reach-around. I'll be watching you."
While I have great affection for Platoon, I had to go with FMJ because it is far more quotable. "He's silly and he's stupid, but he's got guts, and guts is enough." "Get the **** off my obstacle!"
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm stones alright, platoon is a good movie I think nonetheless. kubrick is kubrick................. yes he is indeed a slow storyteller. Some good quality movies though thats for sure.
Kubrick's pacing worked for The Shinning and to a certain extent for Clockwork, other than that though, I want to jab spoons in my eyes. With Stone I watch his movies and just can't help but think he was the least cool or interesting person of his era, and now that no one knows different he pretends like he's so deep, so hip. Like Natural Born Killers. Turned an amazing script into a travesty of a film.
I really love the first hour of 'Full Metal Jacket'. The whole boot camp scene is phenomenal. I prefer Platoon as a more realistic approach to life as a grunt in the field. We had to watch that for Sociology class in high school and do a report. I went to the V.A. and questioned several Vietnam Vets that had seen the movie, and they all said it was very accurate. Specifically the way people got treated, and treated each other. A couple guys said they couldn't watch the whole thing, it was like they were back in the jungle all over again.
Haven't seen Dr. Strangelove actually. I know, I know. And I disagree that it worked for 2001. I get the pacing matches HAL's monotone, but that doesn't make it an enjoyable movie. You haven't said how you feel about your new sig yet?
It means I am not surprised you don't like 2 of the most prolific movies EVAR Doood, you really need to take off the paranoid colored glasses. They are not very becoming on you
What the hell? Why are you not surprised I don't like these 2 war movies? You never answered the question.
It's true fmj is probably more quotable, but as for a great movie watching experience I have to give the nod to Platoon.
fmj, I've watched both recently and fmj just stands the test of time better. "Choke yourself!!!" "A jelly donut SIR!"
