Rush all the way i love every album from "Rush" to "Power Windows". Everything after that is meh. I only like a few songs from the Who, "Pinball Wizard", "Baba O'Reilly" and "We Dont Get Fooled Again".
[nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7DFsBcVMDA"]YouTube - Rush- Tom Sawyer[/nomedia] I should have put an option for Both. A great drummer is just fun to listen to.
Yeah, both bands are outstanding, but Geddy Lee's voice is in my top 10 of most annoying sounding rock vocals ever. I can only take so much of his voice.
Wow, this is a tough one....both have excellent musicians and songwriters....but gotta go with Rush, though La Villa Stangiato, Spirit of Radio, 2112, Closer to the Heart, Subdivisions, Working Man, etc. etc. etc. ....though the Who also kicks ***.
Yes vs. Rush would have been a better poll, and in case you're wondering, I would vote for Yes 100 times and set the opposition on fire.
Yea really...Rush vs. The Who are apples and oranges. Even Rush vs. Yes is a stretch, since even though Rush had prog overtones they were more guitar oriented than Yes was. Now...Yes vs. ELP, hmmmm..... BTW, I voted Rush all the way, being a proghead.
Even though I like Rush and I'm a big prog fan, I voted for The Who because ... well, I really dig their music, first of all, but also ... of the "classic rock" bands, I think they have one of the most unique sounds. Think about it: how many bands can you think of that sound like The Who?
It is an insult to the Who to compare them to Rush. I disagree with the apples and oranges analogy. Its more like apples and tuna fish.
But yet you insult Rush? Each member of Rush is leagues more talented then their counterpart in the Who, whether you like them or not.
This is true. I was talking from a musician standpoint. Geddy's vocals without a doubt are an aquired taste.
You think Alex Lifeson is a better guitarist than Pete Townshend? I love both bands but I cannot say Rush has anything over The Who except for drummer.
I love Yes as much as the next prog fan, but ELP are under-appreciated by many. Keith Emerson is a whiz on keyboards. Greg Lake has very distinct vocals and plays a mean bass. & Carl Palmer is an amazing drummer. Tarkus and Trilogy are awesome albums and since you bring up "brain salad" i might have to give their album "brain salad surgery" a listen. For the record I voted rush in this poll.
Yes I do. Pete's guitar playing is quite limited. He's a GREAT composer, but has he ever played anything that made you go "whoa!" Nope. Evidence by the fact that there are very little lead breaks in any Who songs. Listen to the lead break in "Free Will", and show me anything Pete ever played that even comes close. As for bass, something I know a little about, I LOVED Entwhiste but I think Geddy is better. Ox was a great in the groove player who would riff when the occasion called for it, but nothing that was too complicated for a normal bassist to play. Geddy on the other hand gives me FITS with some of his bass lines. Add to the fact that he's SINGING on top of it, and you realize what a truly incredible bassist he is.
I don't care about musicianship. I care about whether I like the band's songs/albums. I don't like to listen to Rush. I hate the tone of Alex Lifeson's guitar. So wussy. It ain't rock n roll to me. I'm not about musical exploration. But that's just me. That's my taste. Gimme a Neil Young solo over a Clapton solo. Gimme a 2:00 Ramones song over an 11 minute Yes jazz oddyssey. I prefer lyrics to be about girls, drugs and fast cars instead of "subdivisions in society". But that, of course, is just my opinion.
