I hope Mike Smith is dumb enough to listen to Pete Prisco. In the rest of this article, Prisco waxes poetic about how awesome a coach Shawn Peyton is and how smart he is to not use the Wildcat. What was the Saints record again last year? Oh yeah, 8-8.

I can agree that the Wildcat will fade away if teams can't find a way to throw out of it. But I believe the Dolphins will do just that and continue to stun opponents with their outside of the box offensive strategies.

Thanks for the read, but that's ridiculous. This is just another dinosaur whom has yet to catch up with the evolution of the game. The game which WE revolutionized. ;) :D

we will see them on the field very soon
they'll be first in the league to to get a look @ the new & expanded WildCat with Pat White grinning @ them
then they can be first to see our new defensive wrinkles. I'm sure Ryan is looking forward to that experience
this is a very bad way to open the season

A man once said to use all your trick plays and other plays that weren't part of your base offense early in the game.

That man was Paul Brown. He trumps Prisco's word every time for me. ;)

Last time I checked, the Eagles used the wildcat in the playoffs last season.

Apparently we admitted defeat 11 times last season. And admitted a Divsion Title. But I'll admit, Pete Prisco is a douche bag.

Pete Prisco's work, especially in regards to the NFL is consistently some of the worst **** I've ever read. Sorry for posting this drivel by him, but I figured it would stimulate some discussion, or at the very least some good Prisco bashing. As for the latter...MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

You forgot the part about the bright red coats that stand out really well. Or maybe the blue of the French etc. Both(?) with white pants...........as opposed to the militias and such who may have been wearing a more somber pallet due to their station.

I always thought that was the most ridiculous thing in the world.

Then I heard about this guy in China in some Dynasty who decided to send himself into space by strapping dynamite to the bottom of his chair. Apparently he was the smartest guy in his village.

    Wow.

Prisco's "argument" also works to negate punting.

Taken out of the context of football it can also be used to argue against the following:

    - the printing press
    - the telephone
    - tv
    - computers
    - penicillin
    - face masks
    - cars
    - man made fire
    - schools
    - basically anything that's new and effective.

Meh.... I've never been a fan of Prisco... never.

Having said that, I think the reaction here is way overblown.
He makes some valid points as does Sean Payton as to why teams with a top QB wouldn't use the Wildcat and I do believe the Wildcat is simply a trendy thing teams want to tinker with.

I believe Jim Harbaugh summed it up quite nicely as to why the Wildcat will eventually fade off. I didn't see where Prisco ripped the Dolphins specifically here. He was making a point against the Wildcat.

That is pure bs. That is like saying if a team has a top qb they wouldn't run the ball.

Thats one of the main things I don't understand about the article. We had a great QB last year in Pennington who finished 2nd in the MVP voting. He neglected to mention that.

That was Prisco speaking from his years of experience and success in the NFL as a head coach!
Oh....wait.....he never was a head coach was he?

So the wildcat is not the way the game is supposed to be played?
Does that mean that other plays out of the ordinary such as the halfback option pass or the flea flicker are not the way the game is supposed to be played?

Maybe Prisco is a closet Patriots fan who is still bitter about last years embarrassment the Pats received at the hands of Miami.

Prickso demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of football schemes. I guess any team the utilizes the forward pass admits they can't run the ball too.

I don't agree with those who say that the WC is just a fad. IMO its an evolutionary step. It will probably morph into a version of the Gator spread offense. The NFL version will have more passing and the QB will take fewer hits but it provides some strategic, numerical advantages that people who understand football won't ignore. It's basically a version of the spread that incorporates conventional run blocking. That's why Gruden is studying it now. He believes the spread will become a base NFL offense.

Q: The spread is being run in high schools and colleges, is it possible it could be a base offense in the NFL one day?

A: "No question. The hard part is, you have to isolate the option.

    http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-sportsgruden08020809feb08,0,171394.story

There's more to his answer but its about Tebow. The part about the option is key. You have to figure out a way to make the S have to think about the possibility of the QB running without having him (the QB) take too many hits. That keeps the secondary in single coverage which is an advantage for the O. What the Gator offense does is make the defense commit first. Then the offense can simply take the other alternative. If the QB makes the right decision quickly enough, the defense will always be wrong. Then it just comes down to execution.

And by the way, the WC is a version of the single wing. That was the way football was played when passing was considered to be just a fad by people displaying similar vision and understanding to what Prisco is showing now.

    Excellent point Rafael.

Honestly, I don't know if this is the beginning of a permanent evolution of the game or not. But, I do think it's he direction the league is headed in right now. It's a copy cat league, and that was apparent in the second half of the season last season when many teams tried it at one point or another. So, with an off season to practice and prepare, I can see the majority of teams running it to some extent this season. How effective will likely be determined by personnel in as much as how committed they are to running it.

I'm no expert, but I still have my doubts about The Wildcat long term, as my last memory was how well Baltimore handled it against us in the playoffs. I'm also old school, so I'd rather see The Dolphins succeed on being more physical than their opponents (you know, ala Larry Czonka). Although, strategy is certainly a big part of the game, I know. So, I guess it's like anything else...a new scheme comes along and it is successful until/unless teams can learn how to defend it.

For everyone that has fallen head over heels for The Wildcat...keep in mind...what works for us can also work against us.

Harbaugh only stated the Wildcat would fade away if teams couldn't figure out how to pass out of it, and even admitted it would create problems for a defense if a team could figure out how to pass out of it.

Pete Prisco's article is indefensible for the following reasons -

    1. It ignores the fact that Miami had a very good, bordering on great QB in Chad Pennington.

    2. It ignores our overall record of 11-5 and our playoff appearance.

    3. It ignores the fact that even if the Wildcat is minimally or moderately successful, teams still have to spend significant practice time prepping for it.

It also ignores that two of the teams and coaches he gushes over in his article missed the playoffs. Saints, Patriots.

And if the Patriots are so smart not to use the Wildcat, how come they reportedly were very interested in Pat White before the draft to use in their own Wildcat formations? Also, not positive on this, but didn't they take a late round flier on a Pat White, Wild Cat type QB?

What Prisco is too stupid to figure out is that when you have a good or great QB on your team, it surprises teams even more to see them split out as a WR.
