Good win tonight after a really tough loss yesterday. Tough to swallow that 2-1 loss, especially when we had so many chances. Good to see us win today, but Matt Lindstrom gives me stomach issues every single time he takes the mound.

    Another update, another win.

    Johnson + Volstad + West = Money

Miller is pitching very well recently, and Nolasco looked good coming back even though he took the loss. In a perfect scenario Sanchez comes back strong and you can trade Ricky for another bat. I don't think Sanchez has any trade value and Miller has too much potential to just throw away.

If Sanchez doesn't come back strong as a starter, I'd consider making him a short relief/setup/closer type. At max effort I think he can get any 3 batters out at any time, even if he can't always put together a full game.

I am with you Alex, and if Miller can stablize himself, we have 4 good starters. We need to get that 5th guy....even if that 5th guy is Johnny Allstaff, we should be okay. I think they are finally over their May dolldrums and seem to have some life again. If we can get on a roll, we could sneak into that Wildcard race. I think at this point, I am ready to conceed the division to the Phillies.

We play Philli so many times that I'm not quite ready for that yet. I think our pitching is worlds better than theirs, and there is a lot of season left. We'll see where we are at the end of the month.

I fear their hitters, and that is where they can get us. Our pitchers are good, but young and inexperienced. This is where having the wiley veteran Jamie Moyer helps Philly in so many regards. In his 22 or 23 seasons, he has seen it all, and can help guide the young men along the rocky road that is the MLB season.

Jeremy Hermida makes up for his brain fart and hits a walk-off homer! Marlins win 4-3.

    That's very true.

We could have two more wins against them already though, we blew two late inning leads (both in the 9th I think) in our first series. We've played them tough, and thats when our starting pitching was really struggling.

I really do want to be a Jeremy Hermida fan, and doing things like that last night help me, but he is just such a disappointment overall. I expected a 30-35 HR guy, and so far his best is 18 in 2007 I believe. He is still young.....my fear is that Beinfest will trade him to Atlanta, where he explodes and hits 40 for them his 1st year.....you just know that is gonna happen.

If we trade him, it has to be to an AL team !!! :tantrum:

Know what though? Let's forget about Philli for now. First we need to pass Atlanta. They are only a game and a half ahead of us, and we've won 6 of our last 9 games. That's the first step, and very doable.

To me beating Atlanta last year for 3rd place was almost as satisfying as winning the division could have been (not completely but you know what I mean). They won the division every year for the Marlins first 14 seasons, and the Marlins have never (despite winning two World Series) until last season, finished ahead of the stinkin' Braves. :tantrum:

As of this moment we are ahead of Atlanta. I dont know if they play tonight, but we're .5games ahead anyway so it would just be a tie. They may have already played I'm not sure.

6 games against the Sox and Yankees scare me. I hope we can go 4-2 in that stretch, and I think we can if we're able to hit the ball.

Honestly if we pitch like we can, no team scares me. I see this as a 3-3 stretch.

1-2 against the Sox and 2-1 against the Yankees.

No that is not a momentary thing, but for real. We are in 3rd until at least Tuesday. I don't like that Johnson won't pitch against the Red Sox, but at least we get to miss Beckett, so its a trade off I guess.

The Fish have made a remarkable turnaround. Cody Ross is hitting out of his mind, and the guys collectively seem to have come out of their slumps. Great job in turning their own fortunes around. They didn't throw in the towel....now lets see what management does. Does Loria have the courage to keep them together and maybe actually add a couple of pieces so we can win that wildcard ? :confused2:

If we can win 2 in Boston, I am looking at 4-2, and then hopefully we can do 2-1 on Baltimore, and then comes our nemesis, the Rays. Can we finally win a game in St Pete ? That is all I ask, one lousy game.

Well to be fair he did keep a lot of the 03 team together for a while, but it just wasnt working and he blew it up.

I dont think we have anyone with a salary worth trading minus Hanley, and he isn't going anywhere. I doubt we add a piece to our position players, but I wouldnt be surprised if we go after a solid bullpen guy. Especially if Lindstrom keeps blowing up.

I wouldnt be mad if we went after a good offensive catcher, but I dont think anyone is really on the market.

Not sure if I agree with that completely. The '03 team had several key elements that were gone at the end of the season. Urbina being one of them, and Pudge as well. That was the loss of a lot of experience in just those two. Then Derrek Lee at 1st....went to the Cubs in less than a month after the championship was won. Those three were intregal in winning the championship and yet never wore a Marlins uniform after the night they won the title in NY.

Beinfest constructed a poor team after 2003 and I think its funny how people say "I wonder how good they would be if we gave Beinfest a $ 50 million payroll". Well he had a $ 55 million payroll in 2005 and they stunk the joint up.

Oh I agree. But they did have players like Delgado and Pierre for a while after. I guess what I meant was that they kept SOME payroll around a few years before they blew it up.

I don't think he was spending to win. He was spending to see whether or not a higher payroll would bring in more fans, and whether it was worth it in a financial sense.

We'll never have a high payroll, not even with a new stadium unless we sell out every game. He'll add that one player whenever we have a chance to make a run, then ship him off after.

Alex news for ya....ticket sales don't mean squat. The money is in TV & radio revenues, and also merchandise sales. The Miami TV market is the 11th largest and ranks surprisingly at # 14 in the ratings, which means a lot of folks are watching the Marlins on TV but that they just don't go to the games. The Marlins make about $ 5 million only from their TV deal, because they are working off an agreement made years ago and it hasn't been renegotiated. The size of the market and their ratings should bring in about $ 10 million a year more. My take on that is that Loria is waiting till we get into the new stadium to take on the TV contracts. Remember he has also said when the team changes from the Florida Marlins to the Miami Marlins, there will be a team colors change which also means more jersey and t-shirt sales...because everyone will want a new one with the new colors and logo.

It's an official game since it's after the 5th inning. If the game is stopped for good the Marlins would win.

That means there are 13 teams getting more ticket rev. and entertainment revenue. Those are good numbers but they aren't enough to support a high payroll, you need fans in the seats no matter how well you do on TV.

It also means that we have less overall fans than most teams, because what they have in the stadium per year probably makes up for our listening/viewing fans. Regardless I'd rather have smart money than lots of money any day.

Annnyway I was right in hoping we'd get 1 out of these 3, hopefully I'll be right hoping for 2-3 from NY.

3-3 against these two teams would be nothing to be ashamed of.

No no no no.....there are 28 teams that make more from their TV deals than the Marlins. We have the 3rd LOWEST TV deal (only Oakland and Kansas City make less money than the Marlins from TV). Ticket sales we are 2nd lowest right now, so 30 teams make more that way.

TV RATINGS, which mean actual viewers we rank 14th out of 32, so people are watching, and the Marlins have not gone back and renegotiated new TV contracts based on those numbers. Loria knows if he renegotiated the TV contracts, then the advertisers would be expecting better return for their money so the pressure would be on the Marlins to step up their organization. Right now the Marlins have one of the smallest front office orgainzations and the strain on them to deliver more for the advertisers would mean Loria would have to pay more money for the front office. Then its kind of a wash, or maybe even a loss of revenue for him, so he's happy with the status quo right now.

As for actual fans, the TV numbers tell us more people are watching Marlins on TV than fans watch Atlanta, Cincinnati, or Milwaukee, yet all three of those teams have TV revenue 4 to 5 times what the Marlins are making. And in the case of Atlanta, what a drop for them. Their national fanbase has basically dropped away due to the fact they no longer have a Superstation, their home attendance is less than 2 million now their TV ratings for Sports South are less than what the Marlins pull in a smaller market (Atlanta about 3 million, and the Marlins market is around 5.5 million). The Marlins averaged about 100,000 more viewers a night. Yet on ESPN or MLB Network coverage of the Braves as opposed to the Marlins you would think the reversal is in effect. :shifty: What the Marlins need to do more than anything is get Spanish TV coverage, especially as time gets closer that they are the team located in Little Havana. They need to get a weekly TV show on Spanish TV, do a crapload more community development projects in Little Havana and also get the players to visit schools, parks, give clinics, tour shops and restaurants in the area and get people fired up to support the Marlins.

Nice series guys. I would have liked to have played all 9 yesterday but what can you do? The Sox couldn't touch Ricky and Lester wasn't very sharp, the Sox didn't deserve to win that game through the first 6 innings.

Maybe but who knows. With the score so close its possible, especially at Fenway but the Marlins were really hitting Lester and the Sox couldn't touch Nolasco. It sucks that the game was called early but what can you do?

That is true, but we hit pretty well the first two games, we just couldn't score runners. I just feel like we weren't going to score but maybe 1-2 more runs max and it would be so hard to keep you to 1 run the entire game.

The first game minus one inning was actually a really good one too, but we cant take that inning back. Oh well. Or was it the second game? Both beatings feel like one  the game with the 6 run inning.

We need to lock down Josh Johnson into a contract for the rest of his natural life. How can you not love the guy? His ERA is low and yet still deceptive, as he's given up a few runs when he had a cushion to work with. It seems like in close games it just takes it to an entirely new level pitching wise.

Oh and his attitude. How could you not love his interview after he came out of the game. JJ said his fastball was a bit off today, and Craig asked him whether he meant velocity or location. His answer? Paraphrasing a bit since it was a TV interview, but this is pretty much it word for word.

"The velocity doesn't matter to me, you know, whether its 90 or 98 as long as it goes where I want it"
