How good was chad pennington for us last season?

The only time Henning had a offense that used a single back in Washington was in '82 and the offense struggled heavily the whole season to get a run game going. In '81, '87', and '88, there run game featured two or even three 'backs.

Correct but in '82, John Riggins was the feature back I believe and he struggled to provide a run game. I could be wrong though.

 

I agree with the bold text 110%, but I don't agree with Hartline and Turner, at least not yet. Neither one was able to really put up big performances in college, I'm going to reserve judgment on how they'll do until I see them on the field.

I think you're giving Penny too much credit. Even when he has played the majority of the season his numbers aren't going to come close to that of Manning or Brady. He just doesn't have the talent that those QB's do.

Again, we have to remember what we told the Jets fans about Chad when he was in NY, he didn't suddenly become a better player overnight. He was healthy last year, he was in a favorable position on a team that needed him, and he excelled. Last season was his career year, lets not expect that to be the norm.

IDK brother, the OL still has me awfully worried. Thomas is a total unknown, people pencil him in as a 16 game starter and regard him almost the same way they do a polished vet. The Thomas hype came from players talking about how strong he was during camp, until he shows us what he can do out on the field and prove that he's healthy, he's a big questionmark IMO. Smiley is coming back from an injury, he has to prove that he's healthy enough to endure a full season. Grove might have more questions about his health that Smiley or Thomas, Grove is always injured. I'm still not sold that he is a big upgrade at C either, I'll need to see it out on the field.

Then there is the LB position. We need people who can rush the passer, not just fill a roster spot. Outside of Porter, we have little else and Joey had a career year, so he more than likely isn't going to match his performance. Wake is a total unknown, there is a huge gap between the NFL and the CFL. Crowder doesn't make plays, he reacts to them. I'd love to see him become more aggressive and take better angles to the ball carrier, but it's been how many years now? Roth does a good job against the run game, but he isn't getting to the QB and he isn't what you want in the passing game. The other ILB spot is being filled by players who really aren't effective starters IMO and they aren't getting to the QB.

I sure hope that the FO was right not to improve the NT spot through FA or the draft, otherwise we're in for a long year if Fergy goes down. Soliai improved as the year went on, but he still has alot to prove as well.

I may be Mr. Negative, but I see alot of places for improvement.

Upper level, but not top tier. I have no problem with Chad being put in the 2nd tier of QB's, but he isn't in the same class as Manning and Brady.

As far as 2002, you're right, his numbers were slightly better, but still more than comparable to last year and his career in general. Penny excelled above what he's normally shown, we shouldn't just expect him to do it again this year.

I could see london being gone. We may just keep 5 "WRs" now that we have Pat White. But untimatley, it will all depend on how the new rooks shape up.

 

Actually, The Skins ran a lot of 1 back sets back then. That's what screwed up a lot od Ds back then until LT asserted himself. Gibbs would send in the "posse", leaving Don Warren in as TE, leaving only 1 RB. the skins gained many yds on the ground that way. D's had to play it honest with the posse, with Monk, one of the surest handed WRs of all time, Clark, who had a penchant for getting open nearly anytime and then their bonfide deep threat in Sanders. Warren was an exceptional blockers as well as sure hands and those 4 guys right there commanded a lot of attention. So much that Riggins would pound the rock up the middle with little effort.

 

There's alot of projecting going on to get to that point though. Even Penny's best seasons aren't Manning or Brady-like, those players are above and beyond everyone else. Penny is good, but he isn't that good.....he lacks the arm strength.

 

The OL could be poor if people don't play up to potential but I think we'll have a pretty dominant line. I have faith in Thomas,Grove, and Smiley. Plus I think we have decent depth. The linebackers are certainly not dominating but I believe they are serviceable . I don't believe they are a poor unit however

The LB situation is one I thought we really could have improved this draft one I was sure we were going to address. Next draft I really hope we draft a couple OLB and ILB prospects. You can't run a 3-4 defense without good linebackers.

 

Once Porter's production slips from last year, I think you'll see just how poor they really are. If Wake can come in and provide some pressure, maybe they aren't as bad as we think, but that's a big "if".

I was so sure that they were going to improve the LB position, with the FO saying that you can never have enough passrushers to the fact that we have noone other than Porter getting to the QB. Watching us waste a pick on White and then seeing Sintim go to the Giants with the next pick gave me a severe case of the dry heaves.

 

True, but physical ability is just as important. You can have 4 Randy Moss's and a weak armed QB and he isn't going to be able to make the long throws.

Porter is good for another year.if he's injured then we may be in trouble but if he's healthy we're serviceable. We'll probably pick up an extra body maybe even JT

I was shocked to see in the Pennington video after Ginns amazing TD catch Penny walks over and says "Way to make a play Teddy Ginn" then Ginn screams to him "keep throwing me the ball"!!!

That is the most emotion I have seen out of Ginn in 8 years of watching him play football.

All Wr's should want the ball at all times.

 

We'll see. I think ayodele, torbor or anderson may be let go if an upgrade is available. I also think next year we draft two or three LBs

 

When we picked Pat White and then Sintim and Barwin went right after I was crushed. I've come around on the Pat White pick but I'd REALLY have loved one of those 2 prospects on this team. I think both of them will end up being very good linebackers in the future. Sintim in particular could have pushed for a starting slot.

 

The more I think about it next year could be the year for the LB corps. JT is signed for only one year and Joey Porter is getting up there. We could easily part ways with those guys and draft a young stud or two.

 

Honestly I thought we would get a CB or WR in the first round. Darius Butler, Vontae Davis, Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt. I was sure it would be one of those guys and we got Vontae. In the 2nd round I thought Clint Sintim was a strong possibility. And I thought we would get Ramses Barden in the late 2nd or 3rd round. And we missed out on him by 2 picks.

I really like our draft. Especially the first day picks. I think next year it's time to draft LB, NT and RB.

if it is anything like 2008 he will be starting in 2010, it will be the continuation
of the Pennington Renaissance that has been accompanying the Miami Project
& a trip to the big enchilada for the incredible new Miami Dolphins Football team
