I'm on the fence with the Pat White pick. Someone who's totally on board with the pick please help me to see the light. The success of the wildcat is based on surprise, right? The idea is that we line up in our base offense and then when we get the right look on defense we switch to the Wildcat. If White only comes onto the field for certain packages then that takes away the element of surprise - the defense sees it coming. So-o-o-o-o how's this going to work?....... ..thoughts?.....
We could surprise them by running a normal play out of the wildcat, and not a wildcat option handoff like Ronnie. White could take the snap and just drop back and pass. Ronnie could only do three things out of the wildcat. hand it to ricky, keep it up the middle, or once he threw it. All of which were predetermined. White can actually option whether to give or keep. He can drop back and toss a long one to ginn. He can run an option. (AN OPTION IN THE NFL!) He could also line up at wr in the wildcat, and ronnie could toss it to him. I mean, this opens things up in a big way. Depends on Hennings/sparanos creativity.
Hello guys, I'm new to the forum (from Wichita, KS) but have been keeping up with the site for a couple months now. I thought now would be a good time to make my first post, mainly because I'm excited about the draft so far. I really like the CB picks and although the White pick was a big surprise, I think he will be a great pickup. White, Brown, and Williams in the backfield with the Wildcat package.....could be very exciting. With his versatility, I'm interested to see how he will be used. Also Beck is on the trade block (may be traded Sunday?) and odds are Pennington will be gone after next year. Without White, we'd be two QB's down going into 2010. I'm eager to see what happens on day 2.
I say a B. I like the pick of Davis, quite a bit actually. After doing some reading on smith, i like the selection of him as well. We definitely needed help at CB bigtime. There's no doubt about that. The only thing that really kills me on this is Pat White... Surely we didnt draft him to be our franchise QB after Pennington departs (inwhatever way that may be), I just dont think we could afford a luxury pick like that for a wildcat specialist. Sure it probably signals the end of John Beck as a Phin(unless of course we try to convert White to a WR), I just dont see us in a position to make that pick. At least not with Barwin and Sintim still available. I guess that is just an indication that the FO thinks Wake, Roth, Porter and Crowrder and our present LB corps can get the job done. As much as i dislike the pat white pick, i must say im a bit intrigued. He has boatloads of talent and potential. The question is... where? At what position? The possibilities in our offense are endless now,e specially in the wildcat with him in there, but... I just still get taken back by the fact that I just dont feel we can afford a luxury pick like that. Besides... gimmick offenses like that usually go as quickly as they come in this league. Only time will tell this this one I guess..

Anyone upset or dumbfounded by the Pat White pick... well, let's just say that I've been very busy, I haven't been able to pay as much attention to this draft as I have in the past, and EVEN I knew the value of Pat White to our offense. Another Hines Ward or Antwaan Randle-El? Yeah... I'll take that.
I gave the draft a B. I have a feeling Davis, with the help of our coaching staff, will turn into a shutdown corner. The kid is a very smart playmaker with good speed and great size. You cant teach smart. You cant teach fast. You cant teach size. Great pick. I am so glad he fell to us. I dont understand the hate for Pat White. The kid is very talented. He can expand our wildcat formation immediatly, and possibly develop into a skilled receiver. Plus, pennington will most likely be leaving after this next season...so he will be our #2 QB I imagine. Call me crazy, but I think Pat White has the best chance of being successful in this league in our offense. Something inside tells me many people will be eating much crow. I am intrigued by Smith. Havent gotten a chance to see him much. But I love the idea of adding 2 CBs. I wasnt very happy with our CB play last year, and Eric Green didnt make me feel warm and fuzzy at all...but him as a 3rd or 4th CB I like.
I have that feeling too. I did have feeling that we will draft him, White, right before we drafted him. I told my brother that I will be very happy if we draft him and BAM! we got him
I gave it a B mostly based off of the selection of the two corners. White is growing on me because I think he could be our version of Josh Cribbs. I'd love to see what he can do as a return man on kickoffs. I know the Patriots and Cowboys wanted him a couple of picks after us, but we will see come training camp what his role will be.
You put him in to start off as a WR in base formations with special duties in the Wildcat. It's a REALLY risky pick no matter how you slice it. He will either be a WOW pick or a BUST. No in between.
I guess C+, but you just can't say at this point. This was a freakin' bizarre day! At least I got one guy right in my mock with Sean Smith. That was a great pick and great value. I'd never though he'd fall that far. Thank God for that one. As for the mind boggling pick of Pat White; Well, I guess you can definitely say the dude is a winner. I have to rationalize it to keep my sanity. No freakin' pass rushers? Our secondary is definitely upgraded, which is a good thing, but I really hope we get some pass rush help as well as receiving help on day 2. I really hope we can get Sidbury, my choice for our 3rd. I'd be real happy that. I'd love to get Terrance Taylor. It's weird with Parcells & co being such high character guys, that they would pick Davis. I guess they know more about than what we read in the press. I hope. I think the "high character thing gets blown out of proportion. I think he wants tough football players first and foremost, but who knows? Definitely bizarre, but not necessarily bad. I love the Sean Smith pick. There are a lot of good players still left. I have a feeling we're going to have a really good day 2.
teams reach for players all the time why is it such a big deal we put our hand out for white? because we needed a LBer? we picked up wake. no he isn't proven but neither is anyone else that we could have drafted. need a CB? at that point we had already selected davis. WR? you know this regime doesn't value WRers like that. all the other positions have been added to in FA.... i don't understand the "C" draft grades we're getting. I'm excited about all three picks. Especially love the CB picks and admittedly I'll have to see what else White can bring to the table but his Wildcat talents alone have me very intrigued. Gotta bleed a little aqua and orange every now and then, know what I mean?
Look at our schedule. We play a lot of really good passing teams. I'm glad we got two corners. We are now very deep at that position. My Projected CB Depth: Sean Smith Will Allen Vontae Davis Eric Green Jason Allen Joey Thomas Nate Jones The bottom 3 will compete for the 5th spot, and losers will compete for a PS spot. Pat White is a pick that pissed me off. But even admidst my fury, I'm willing to be patient and see how this can unfold. Right now I don't see White as being able to have any role that merits a pick that high. But John Beck, Daunte Culpepper, and AJ Feeley all cost us 2nd round picks and didn't give us swat. We traded Jason Taylor for Pat White. We also passed on Sintim for him. JT for Sintim would have been great. Only time can tell how this one will unfold. I don't think the future of our team lies on the success of that pick. It was definately a luxury pick, which shows a lot of confidence in the guys we currently have on defense. Right now the Saints scare me. I don't think we have a LB that can matchup even remotely well with Reggie Bush. We'll see how the rest unfold tomorrow.....goodnight. I voted B.
I actually used to dream a lot about getting Pat White, but not that high. The options this gives our O is amazing. We had coaches scrambling this past season to try to figure out the Wildcat, just think the time they'll have to spend preparing for us now and in the process, hopefully neglecting the other aspects of their game. I thought he'd be there later, but I really like the guy. He has a great attitude and like I said before; he's a winner through and through. Our potential is limitless.
I grade Miami a C. Davis: B White: F Smith: B+ Pat White's pick ranks up there with "Jamar Fletcher," "Eddie Moore," and 07's "Ted Ginn" on the WTF-O-Meter. These "slash" players always end up maximizing their talent in the range of mediocre. Kordell, Randel El, Matt Jones, etc... Great athletes for sure, can contribute, but hardly prospects worth giving up their perceived value, which is usually high. See Matt Jones rise into round 1. And now PW I guess... Can Pat White truly run the Wildcat? He can throw the ball... OK, great. However we shouldn't overlook the fact that he's 200 pounds. He's not going to be running up the middle in the heart of a defense in the NFL. I don't know if he's going to be able to really cut it outside either. He's not big enough and he's not fast enough. Michael Vick he is not. As a WR what value does he offer? Blazing 4.55 speed? No route running experience? That towering 6' frame? Come on... He's offering nothing we don't already have. Quite frankly, he's not offering anything as a WR I want... If White were a 4th round pick, I wouldn't be as upset. Clint Sintim (and experienced 3-4 OLB) and Connor Barwin aren't going to be on the board in round 4. I would gladly trade drafts with NYG... Nicks, Sintim, and Smith? God that would've been awesome. ETA: ON another note... When does the trend of sending 2nd round picks for QB end? Feeley, Culpepper, Beck, Henne, and now White... Somebody make it stop!
Getting the two corners we did is huge, great, great drafting. Pat White is a luxury pick, but we're a playoff team now, we can afford to take risks. I think I would have preferred Sintim though... And as a side note, it really is a shame that Vontae Davis appears to be such a dick. Hopefully that won't come back to bite us, we could do without our own PacMan.
no one can complain about the selection of 2 X CBs ... especially 2 that could hold down our corners for the next 7 years ... white seems dissapointing to me right now today ... namely because we took him in the 2d rd ... much like Ginn in rd 1. guess we'll see come TC - why the FO was so high on him (i get his versatility). now get Brinkley for the ILB ... this also means we will 'probably' reach out and sign JT for a 1 or 2 year contract.
I love the CB picks. Especially getting Sean Smith where we did. But getting Pat White? When Sintim and Barwin are both available? Doesn't seem to make sense.
Having had a chance to sleep on the picks (and let my buzz wear off...lol), I can honestly say I hate the Pat White pick. And, not because of the player, but because of where they took him. #44? Are you kidding me? That is a terrible pick. Period. Several here have used the term "luxury pick," and I agree. It was a luxury pick. And, I just don't think we can afford a luxury pick in a rebuilding process. JMHO. Someone else said so I guess we traded Jason Taylor for Pat White, and I also thought that was profound. That trade doesn't look nearly as good now IMO. Also, what does it say for Henne? I thought he was considered the QB of our future...no? Now what? What is he thinking/feeling today? No sir, #44 needed to be invested elsewhere. Sintim would've been my choice. Taking Davis at #25? OK, I guess I can accept that. Sounds like if he can keep his head on straight, he could be a great corner for years. And, adding S. Smith at #61 was a great pick. Best of the draft so far IMO. The way I see it, the secondary is set, so we can focus on other areas of need. Overall...C- (so far). But hey...WTF do I know?
if both Davis and Smith pan out as our starting CBs next year ... i'll go an A, regardless of what White does or does not do. we all knew CB was a dire need position this year, and although i would not and did not predict 2 day 1 CBs ... i am happy with it -- both have solid potential.

I want to italicize, bold-face, underline, capitalize, goldplate and do whatever other emphasis on the words I bolded on your post. I couldn't agree with you any more on him. People, say all you want about how you "don't get it" and scratch your head until you bleed if you wish.
I gave the first day a B. I feel we got two of the best CBs in the draft in Davis and Smith. I have mixed feelings on Pat White. He may have been a reach at where he was picked but he is still a very good athlete who is considered a smart player. He has excelled at each level he has played at and could be a surprise. I will reserve any judgement of Pat White until I see what he offers and how they plan to use him.
Fair enough, but Pat White does deserve a chance at least, he did not choose to be taken at #44, he didn't choose to have a sort of muddle about what exactly he is going to be doing in for the team, but he does have to perform whatever they give him to do for us. I hope Ireland catches a ton of flak for the pick because he did take a massive risk in making it, if it works out, he's the hero, if falls flat, Ireland deserves the scorn we give to Speilman now.
Lindy's compares Sean Smith to Nmandi Asomugha in terms of his height, skills and speed. I think he was a great find late in round two.
Consider this, we've taken 3 Qb's with #2 picks in the last 3 drafts, and we have Chad Pennington to show for the effort, taking P White means the end of Beck, which is what it is, but how many #2 picks are we going to burn on Qb's? We've spent #2's for 5 straight years on Qb's.
I know, but Ireland has only taken Henne and White. You can't put Feeley, Culpepper and Beck on him. I know Ireland says they look at White as a QB, but there's no way that's all they see him as. This isn't a front office with tunnel vision.
