Leaving the Favre fascination aside, Madden was a legend, long past his prime. He's the greatest NFL color-man ever. He was an excellent teacher of the game, who liked to shine a light on the fat guys in the trenches. However, in recent years, he became a parody of himself. Good to see him go before he completely embarrasses himself.
Whether or not the guy may have gotten a little lax in his commentating skills over the past few years the guy still has one of the most recognizable broadcasting voices ever in the NFL. Personally the commentators I enjoy hearing most are him and Michaels because otherwise I have to listen to Joe Buck, Tony Kornheiser, Dan Dierdorf, and worst of all the man with the worst broadcasting voice of all time Bryant Gumbel (although I know he was replaced and also I think it was "Bryant" Gumbel, I can't remember anything other than his Kermit voice on the NFL Network two years ago ). So yes this is the passing of a legend and I know I'll miss hearing him and Michaels announcing Sunday night games this year.
Ugh he is so squinty and blubbery... I could imagine him stuffing his face with hotdogs and hoagies during commercial breaks.
I would have rather seen Diersdorf go. I got used to Madden but it took awhile. That damned 'coaches clicker', he wouldn't put that thing down! Best wishes in your golden years, Coach Madden
He brought so much to the game over the years. As a player, coach and commentator. I cannot remember a time without him in the game.
I can not stand the man as a commentator. However he will be missed because he brought alot to the game of football
In all seriousness, I've never been a fan of Madden's (as a commentator). Now, as a coach, and a student/scholar of the game, I have nothing but respect for him. He's probably forgotten more than I'll ever know. But, I found him to be very repetitive and irksome for the most part. That damn telestrator being one of the more annoying things that he did. Having said all that, he is an icon in the game, both on the field and in the press box. So, I can appreciate the sadness that his retiring might bring on. On a side note, maybe Favre will take his place? Maybe John was just keeping his seat warm for him?

Early on, I liked him a lot. He has been a self-parody for 15 years, though. Had to respect him as a coach, even though I hated his teams' guts.
Good riddance, although even though I cant stand him, he was a good coach and a legend in the field of sports broadcasting.
This is pretty shocking news. Say what you want about him but he was one of the best ever in the booth and he will surely be missed. Thanks for the memories, John! I wonder who'll be with Al Michaels for SNF. Cris Collinsworth? I know he isn't too popular but I really enjoy Collinsworth.
John and Pat were a great broadcast team for a lot of years. Those two with Dick Enberg and Howard Cosell were in a class by themselves. I miss those day when watching football was a lot more fun. Today we have a bunch of guys who don't even seem to care about the game or get excited while doing the calls. Adios Amigo, you are already missed!

Yeah, I've always liked Collinsworth. Not only does he have a self deprecating way about him, but he's also got a great voice for broadcasting. And you're right...he ain't no one's dummy when it comes to football acumen IMO. I think it instantly makes watching SNF games more enjoyable. Apologies to all the Madden faithful.
I always used to notice Madden didnt show too much love for the Phins. Am i right thinking Madden didnt like us watering the field before the 1973 AFC Championship game Grew up listening to his commentary and although he wasnt at his best last few yrs or so i wish him all the best in his retirement and thanks for the memories.
That pretty much sums it up. Sure he said some stupid things now and then, but not hearing his voice at least once a week during an nfl game is going to be really strange. The guy is legendary.

Madden/Summerall was an awesome team, loved hearing them and was quite sad when pat retired. Madden took alot of flak in recent years, but I always enjoyed him and think the broadcasting world will not be quite as good anymore.
just watched madden "road to cannon" choked me up....hes an amazing dude...he gets alot of flack...but he was a great coach.....and great innovator of the game.... created the 3-4 defense....mini camps....video taping practices he deserves everything positive he recieves!
He has nothing to do with the design and coding process, he just licenses his name. That said, I think you'll like the game this year.
