That is funny. Juice is the term I used to summarize, he said something like explosiveness or play making ability. He said it after the season ended or it was reported he said it.

actually I was thinking more along the lines of Eric Green who until someone takes it away from him looks like the starter to me. I just dont see any corners in this draft that blow me away. I know Hindsite is always 20/20 and I am sure a few will impress next year, and chances are they wont all come from the first round. I was also thinking of Cameron Wake who I have a funny feeling is going to pay off for us as a pass rusher, so if one or both of those pickups pans out than our front office has ''to some degree" adressed these issues. Plus there are always diamonds in the rough late in the draft and Parcells seems to be able to find them Nicks just looks like the player who could help this team the most to me with that pick. but we will see. Oh and yes I copied and pasted LOL

I'd just like to point out that two of the last four picks have been WR, which is pretty much what I expected. Matter of fact, I knew the NYG GM was going to select a WR now that Plaxico has been cut. And, whereas I once thought Nicks might slip to us at #44, there's no way now that he does. In other words, if we want Nicks, we have to take him at #25.

They won't do either of the two IMO. They'll take Kenny Britt if they're smart. Eli Manning's issues with accuracy requires a tall target and Britt fits that. Think Terrell Owens without the attitude.

Two things, the will be targets later in the first and early second, perhaps even before #44, second, with the way this regime values WR, I'd see them taking one of the OLBs that the covet and going WR later in the round. JMO, but I think they value that pass rushing LB much greater than the WR positions...WRs take a couple of years to develop, an OLB can usually step right in, even the conversion OLBs..

I think they value CB more than LB right now. Our LB's are decent, our CB's aren't!

There seems to be a real division amongst thePHINS.com faithful as to whether or not Nicks was (is) the right choice at #25. In fact, it appears the debate is still ongoing. And, I just wanna say I think that's great! That's one of the reasons why I started this thread. In other words, I think it's great that we can have a lively debate/discussion on the subject, because at the end of the day we all just want what is best for our beloved Dolphins.

As to whether or the The Trifecta will use that 1st round pick on a WR (regardless of my decision to do so), I think it's hard to say. As stated in my mock draft analysis, historically speaking Parcells likes to go defense (and typically front seven) with his first round picks. But, I think (and hope) they will use it (assuming they don't trade down of course) on the BPA that also fills a need position. And, I do believe WR is one of those positions.

Funny thing to me is there seems to be a split in here. There's the camp that says we should use that pick on a OLB/DE or hybrid (pass rushing specialist), but opinions vary very widely on which one. Barwin, English, Johnson, Matthews, Sintim and so on. Then there's the camp that say "Nicks." Note...I did not say WR, I said Nicks. My point is, we're all in agreement...it's not the position we are demanding be picked, it's the player. That to me is very telling.

As to those that are saying CB, and calling out Butler, S. Smith, Davis, etc., my feeling is CB is a position we can address in round two even though it is arguably one of the biggest needs on the whole team. My hope is that I'm right. Moreover, I hope that one of our currently rostered CB's steps up and earns a starting spot in TC.

PS: On a side note...the Tennessee GM just tried to draft Nicks (not realizing he was off the board). Said he wanted Britt, but felt Nicks was a solid fall back option, and that he was clearly not going to last past the first round. Well, he's right. Because, at least as far as this mock is concerned, he's already a Dolphin!

I agree 100% this kid just jumped out at me as the most NFL ready wr when I watched him in college. The only other combo I would have suggested would have been Butler and hope Kenny Britt falls to 44, but he didnt even make it to 30, so I think you made the right choice!

I am certainly not a student of the draft, but, i dont think there is ANY WAY we take a WR in the first. Not with the holes we have on D. We ESPECIALLY wont draft another possession receiver in the first. Good thing its just for fun. I wouldnt take Nicks over Britt anyway. Britt is at least as fast, he is taller, and its debatable who has the better hands.

    Have fun

Well, Barwin came off the board early this morning. And, to NE of all teams! Which, I'm sure will make his supporters here none too happy.

I've updated the picks in the first post. The St. Louis GM is on the clock, and we're only ten picks away from our first of two second round picks.

Well, looks like it's definitely time to reshuffle. All of the players listed above are gone now except for S. Smith. Was hoping English might slide, but he just got snagged by the Cincy GM. Oh well.

OK, some players to consider for our first pick in the 2nd round:

    CB's S.Smith, DJ Moore, J. Byrd, A. Allen, M. Mickens
    DE/OLB's C. Brown, P. Kruger, M. Freeman

BTW, DE R. Ayers is still amazingly on the board. He's considered a mid first rounder by just about every source/site I have visited. Although, from what I have read, he's better suited to play in a 4-3. But, if he could fit into our defensive scheme, he's be an absolute steal at #44.

Looking for any feedback or input I can get. Only four more picks 'til our turn.

    Thanks in advance!

Sean Smith or Robert Ayers should be the pick. At least one of them is sure to be gone before you pick so the decision should be easy. Is Sintim still on the board? Too high for Moore, Byrd, Allen, Mickens, Brown, and Freeman. Don't use #44 on any of them. I don't know much about Kruger so I can't comment on him.

Ayers is tricky. He's got one year of production and underachieved his other years at University of Tennessee. Outstanding quickness off the edge and can get after the QB well but his production or therefore lack of is a question mark.

Its probably not early for Cody Brown. He's got great strength and can get after the QB but his motor is not very good. In my opinion, Marcus Freemen doesn't fit in this scheme. He's soft and is more of a pile jumper than a tackler. He can cover pretty well though.

Value pick for Paul Kruger. He can get the job done. Very athletic, closes well, quick laterally and in a straight line and can cover if asked to.

Personally, I think its between Kruger and Smith there and I think Smith is the better value.

No problem. Who else is on the board? Clint Sintim?

I don't think its to high for Byrd, Moore or Brown. Moore is arguably the best cover corner in the draft. Jairus Byrd is a flat out playmaker and every time I watch him, they don't throw his way. Cody Brown is a good rusher, its just a matter of preference. Do you mind a guy who takes plays off or not? I personally loathe it.

No Alen, he went in the first round to NE (BTW, if you go to the first thread on the first page, you'll see where I'm updating the picks as they are made).

I'm glad to hear you make mention of Byrd, 'cause I just saw a video capsule on him (on NFL.com), and I was very impressed. He looks like a stud (definitely thicker than most of the CB prospects, and a solid tackler). Quite durable too, as he has not missed a game in his college career (at least, I think that's what the narrator said). At any rate, any thoughts on him vs. S. Smith (who everyone here seems to be very excited about)?

Ah gotcha, sorry about that. I didn't know it was updated.

I like both a lot. Byrd is very impressive and like I said earlier, I don't see the ball thrown his way much when I watch him yet he makes plays. Sean Smith is my number one cornerback. He's got great size at 6'3 1/2 and jumps well so he matches up better with the bigger wide receivers than others. He's very fluid in his hips and even though his footwork can get choppy from time to time, he's usually got it down pat. He's got good ball skills and his nine (I think that's the number, I'm going blank here) show that. He's also a player in run support, he can turn out of blocks and back into the play to make the stop.

Well, with only two more picks until my turn, I'm focusing in on CB with my next selection. And, since everyone here seems so high on Smith, and based on my research as well, I am prepared to pick him at #44 if he's still available.

If anyone has any compelling arguments one way or the other, now's the time to let me hear from you please.

Just to be clear I'm not saying they won't go that high. I just don't believe Ireland or Parcells would take any of them at #44.

Byrd ran 4.68 at his Pro Day. That's not what you'd expect from a 2nd round corner. Ireland and Parcells will work out Brown. They'll interview him and try to get a read on him but in the end they won't draft a guy with his motor. Maybe if he fell to the 4th or 5th round but not in the 2nd. Moore is simply too short. On PATH TO THE DRAFT yesterday Mayock said corners his size generally play the nickel and go in the mid-rounds.

OK, while we wait for the SF GM to make his selection, I wanna throw this out...

after more research, I'm thinking about using the #44 pick on Paul Kruger, DE Utah, and taking best available CB at #56. Kruger sounds like a real Parcells guy. High motor, tough, good character, etc. I'm thinking even if Smith is gone by then, Byrd makes for a solid selection to compete for the CB spot opposite Will Allen. To be totally honest, I don't know that I'm all that impressed with Smith. I think too much might be being made out of his height.

Question is...does Kruger fit into our defensive scheme? I'm guessing he'd play OLB opposite Porter. So, what does that do for Roth (assuming Kruger were to win a starting gig)? Or, is this a development guy? If so, maybe it's a little early to be picking a developmental guy.

    Input anyone?

Gotcha. I thought you meant his stock in general.

In reference to his forty yard dash, he'd be an excellent fit on a team that uses zone heavily. You could also put him at FS and then let him attack.

Its not Sean Smith's height that catches your attention, its the fact that he's very fluid and is a ballhawk. He's a complete defensive back, in terms of playing the ball well, playing the run and can jump with the best of them.

Kruger's not a developmental player. He does a good job of setting the edge and getting after the Quarterback. He'd play the strong-side spot, where Roth is now and could possibly win the starting job. Probably one of the few linebackers in this class that could take the starting spot away from him, the other being Clint Sintim.

Well, just as I was about ready to make my selection, and pick Sean Smith, a replacement GM for the absentee SF GM comes in and steals him right from under my nose. UFB!

So, now I must reevaluate and make another selection. Suffice to say the last dozen or so picks have totally derailed my draft strategy.

OK, but I would have you direct follow questions to picking Ayers (with any pick), which are:

    1) Does he fit into our system?
    2) Assuming he'd play DE (and not OLB), is there as great a need for a DE as there is for other positions (i.e., NT, CB, OLB)?

At this point, I'm torn between Kruger (to play OLB) and Byrd.

Ayers value is too good to pass up at this point as he is considered a 1st round pick. He has all the physical ability you look for in an OLB but played mostly DE in college because that is where his team needed him to play. His pro day numbers were great. His lack of production is a concern having only started one year but he has much greater upside than Kruger or Byrd (both of whom should be there with our next pick). Even so, if you read his former HC's comments about him, you'll realize that maturity was part of that early poor production. A solid interview should erase any doubts about him.
