    Well alot of that has to do with how gullible and unwilling to educate themselves on decisions that American consumers tend to be. They don't look into facts at all and tend to believe things they may have heard 15 years ago still stand true. Some posts in this thread pretty much prove it.

    over there
    I have worked on vehicles and misc. equipment my whole life.
    Sounds like you had something very rare in a Toyota happen.Maybe the material in the plate is being made differently these days.,I could'nt say.I would'nt give up on the product all together though.
    I "AM" a true American and have worked on both Japenese and American vehicles.
    Japan still makes a better product when it come to reliability.Sorry, but that's the truth.

    When America(big 3) start doing a better job making their vehicles.Someone needs to let me know,and I will buy them again.Until then I will stick with Japenese vehicles.
    I won't mention buyouts and stuff like that.That is for another forum.

    Sorry to hear what happened to your car.I know it's frustrating,FFIC.

    This is from your post.

    If you were talking about any other type of part other then the clutch I would take your post a lot more seriously. The problem is this part requires so much input from you the driver that I have never heard of a clutch lasting to 192,000 miles. Not saying it's not true or it didn't happen I'm just saying human error plays a big big factor in the longevity of a clutch.

    There are other people who have had problems with the clutch in these cars. You are new here, and don't know of me at all. I wouldn't post things that are not true. I am just trying to pass this along so no one else gets to pay for expensive clutch replacements.

    I am very sorry I did not mean it the way I wrote it and the way it sounds now that I read it back. I apoligize if I offended you in any way because that was not my intent. I have read many many of your posts and they have always been intellectual and on point. Please accept my apoligy!!!!

    That definitely sucks! It seems way to premature for a clutch problem-especially if the car was driven responsibly. I have owned American cars befor I switched to a Honda and I must say- there is NO comparison. I recently traded in my 2000 Accord for the new 2009 Accord V6. My 2000 Accord never gave me any real mechanical problems and I was reluctant to get rid of it but- as Honda`s hold their value- I traded it in whle it was still worth something as a down payment (82,000 miles and I got $4,000 trading it in). I absolutely love my new Accord it looks great and rides smooth and quiet.
    Sorry for getting off topic but I see a debate here comparing American cars with Japanese models and I just had to forward my experience with both. My advice to anyone who has had enough of car troubles- BUY A HONDA

    Dude...is it 1943? I can not stress how revolting and offensive that three letter word is.

    On topic: I still have a 1993 Civic (although it is parked because I wanted a new car). It came with all documentation when I bought it and the only thing it had done to it in it's first 110,000 KM (how many it had on it when I bought it) was oil changes and tune ups. I put over 100,000 VERY HARD KM's on it and all I did was change the oil and do the front brakes ($20.00 pads) and it is still ticking along just fine.

    The point I am trying to make (and I am not downplaying FFIC pissed off level or his right to be pissed off) is that if you took everyone who has bought every car in the World aside I'm willing to bet that a LOT of them would rail against the car and/or the auto maker because everyone has a car horror story.

    E.G.: I for one will NEVER EVER buy another Ford car, EVER. Yes, they have improved their level of quality and yes their reputation is better but my experience with one of their cars was so bad that I would not care if they made a car that ran on water, I would not buy it. Yet, I have a friend who has/will only buy Ford and talks about them like they should be in the heavens.

    On my 1992 Camaro I had to replace starters. They were like 225.00 a pop. I made sure after the first one or two to get the warranty with them. The reason being, the exhaust pipes ran right around the starter. The starters kept going because of the constant heat from the exhaust pipes, even with high heat wrap around the pipes that my dad had sent me. By the time I sold it I believe I went through four starters. I really enjoyed that car. It hauled butt even for a 3.1 V6.:lol:

    The thing that makes this sting this much more is that I just got my job, and I didn't have the money to put into my car. I didn't really expect this to happen so early. It is a 2004 with low mileage, and has been well cared for.

    i've had a 98, a 2000 and a 2004 ram, they were diesel though. never had a problem with any of em, except the 2004 didn't like black ice and i totalled it. my wife didn't want to get another truck without it being a 4X4. didn't like dodges 4X4 and my wife didn't want another diesel so we got a silverado. runs great too, the gas milage sucks but thats because its a 6.0 vortec. it really hauls butt

    Wow sometimes I am convinced an argument can come out of nowhere on here. :lol:

    I have known people with both American and Foreign cars (including Japanese not "Jap") which have done quite well. In fact I drive a 1998 GMC 1500 pickup and although it is bad on gas it has over 100,000 miles on it and going strong. Plus I have been highly impressed with Nissans as several of my family members and even a couple friends have owned them and never had any problems.

    Also FFIC hate to hear about your problem with this though. :pity:

    there starting to get alot of foreign cars here in arkansas but its just been since the gas crunch and you have a lot of people moving back here form the west coast that don't have a "buy american" complex. wasn't long ago you couldn't find a foreign car here. everybody i know that has one is very happy with theirs and to be honest, i bet you find more american parts in a japanese car than a dodge or chevy.

    Last response from Toyota. It is like talking to a wall.

    Response (MCot) 03/23/2009 07:07 AM John,

    We are sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction with our response to your clutch concern and your request for financial assistance.

    We rely on the technical expertise of Toyota dealerships. Toyota dealership technicians are specialized in the diagnosis and repair of Toyota vehicles. They are provided with extensive training and have access to state of the art equipment to help in the accurate diagnosis of your vehicle.

    Each Toyota dealership has, on site, a Customer Relations Manager to oversee the various operations and address any concerns a customer may have. The Customer Relations Manager has the power to review customers' request for assistance beyond the warranty period when customers present their vehicle for inspection and diagnosis.

    The Customer Relations Manager takes into consideration a number of factors such as:

    * Vehicle age and mileage in comparison to the manufacturer’s original warranty
    * Nature of repair
    * Inspection of the affected parts
    * Maintenance and repair history

    However, as you did not present your vehicle to a Toyota dealership for diagnosis, a Customer Relations Manager did not have an opportunity to address your request.
