WoW holds your hand far too much IMO. I think that Blizzard also takes the easy road when designing raid content. For example, the way they allow Naxx & their other top raids to be ran in either 10man or 25man instances....That sounds like a decent idea on the surface, but it was just Blizzard's way of getting out of actually designing unique 10 man content.

But in the end that's what it comes down to. Blizzard taking the hardcore MMO experience that was developed before they got into the market and turning it into a more mainstream appealing experience where they hold your hand through the entire game. I'm not really complaining even though it sounds like it, I enjoyed playing WoW with some friends. But it is far, far from being the "holy grail" of gaming, if even of MMORPGs.

With that said, if any of my friends were to be interested in playing a MMO, I point them in the direction of WoW(I have played 95% of mainstream MMORPGs too). My personal issue stems from the fact I started playing these kind of games years ago when I was in school, and WoW to me is just a very well funded yet simplified experience compared to what I have seen before. There really isn't any innovation being done & the difficulty just doesn't scale to my liking.

Still, the game is plenty of fun & it's kind of funny to see so many games mimic WoW's design. It's very reminiscent of when EQ was alone atop the MMO world(in terms of subscribers/market share) and every MMORPG that was released look like clones of it.

I tried to get into Warcraft. I really did. I don't know whether it's that I just didn't dig the game, or that I don't like MMORPG's (although I dug City of Heroes), but I just never really felt the hook.

Now, that may all change if and when Star Trek's MMORPG finally gets going.

I prefer console gaming over pc MMO's. Reasons why:

    1. I need closure. I don't get satisfication out of something that will never have an ending.

    2. I hate grinding. I get bored killing the same damn enemies over and over for hours on end.

    3. I have a life. To be succesful in any MMO, you have to spend too much time in game. It's a huge time sink.

    4. It's not worth the money per month. I even stop playing the free ones after about a month.

I could list more but that is the main 4 reason. I am not bashing the people who play, but just explaining why I can't get into them.

If I were to be stranded on a desert isle with only one game to last me forever, it would have to be WoW. It was revolutionary when it came out and continues to be as it changes and stays relevant. I've played every other mmo almost and they all suck compared to it, unfortunately.

Wow's gameplay is what makes it appealing. there is no game on the market with a class anything like the hunter class in WoW.

    best game ever bros...sorry

the game can be overwhelming especially in such a short period of time. it is not abnormal to not be able to get into it your first time playing. you only experience 1/1000th of the game in a free trial period

I have to add that I think it's kind of silly for anyone to claim they do not grind in WoW. The very essence of any MMORPG is grinding. Whether that be via grinding the same monsters over and over, or grinding out quests or reputation/faction - it is still repetition of game play.

Even PVP in WoW is grind, battlegrounds & Arena take quite a bit of effort and time investment to reap their associated rewards. Albeit, the PVP grind IMO is the most entertaining one due to human counterparts being involved, but it is still repetitious. Faction/Reputation rewards are probably the biggest grinds in the game, but don't forget about "raid grinding" which requires your guild to gear out everyone for future encounters, requiring doing the same raid instances as much as possible.

I think it is safe to say that if someone doesn't enjoy "grinds", they probably won't be too interested in MMORPG's.

I was wondering about that and didn't want to get into an arguement about a game I have played all of 10 hours. I thought all MMO's require you to grind. <Go kill 25 wolves or collect 5 shells from killing Long Fang Frogs. Either that or having to grind to collect enough experience or gold.>

    I have a 80 Warlock on Nordrassil.

Have any you guys played WoW when it first came out? Raiding was hard back in the days before Blizzard decided to nerf to let the casual gamer see new content. Raiding in Lich king is a lot easier from the original WoW & BC, but raiding will start to get harder once the new 25man content comes out. Blizzard actually did the right move by catering to the casuals this time around since they make up the majority of the subscription compared to the hardcores.

I actually play on the EU realms, anachranos to be specific. Also have a decked out 80 hunter, plus an up and coming 80 shaman and a load of others working up.

I play far to much of it, but I find it much more entertaining than just watching TV and things like that.

Blizzard I think is doing a fantastic job in taking a genre that had been dominated pretty much solely by a harcore nerd gamer "elite" and making a massively accessible game. Theres no doubt its gotten "easier" over time for people who have been around since the begginning or even came from other games like Evercrack, but that was the plan.
And really, go argue the success of that plan, I dare someone ;)

I dont know if its singularly the best game ever made, but its the ONLY game that has held my attention for any length of time from a long history of PC, Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox games.

I sure wouldn't tell him he's a nerd, but he's a nerd in every sense of the word. The fact that he could probably turn my spine into a question mark doesn't change that. That rant was one of the nerdiest things I've ever listened to.

I played this game for about 3 months and never met enough people online to make it fun. I can't stand being holed up in my room playing alone on the computer. If I didn't have a console I'm sure I would have tried harder to meet people...

    My main here :)

I actually got involved through my then gf now wife because she played when we met. I played her account a few times and got hooked. Eventually she made me get my own account so she could play too lol. Definately makes the game a bit more fun. Also usually important to find a nice guild that suits you, the interaction and the ability to play with others makes it a much more satisfying experience.

I'm in the same boat. No game besides EQ (2 yrs) & WoW (since the beginning) were able to hold my attention for years. I was so addicted to WoW at one time, I was playing it while at work. I was a System Admin for a small print shop company and had my own office.

How bad is the lag playing on an EU server? I remember getting more lag when I was vacationing in FL and playing on a PST server.

    http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Nordrassil&n=Theurgie

Here's mine. I haven't played in 3+ months though. I can finally say I'm able to kick the habit.

Been playing since beta. My main is an 80 tauren druid. I have a few real life friends that i've know since high school that live spread out all over the US and MMO'S are the main way we stay in touch. We've been doing it since the early days of EQ. I've enjoyed WoW but lately am feeling very burned out. Thinking of quitting but may wait till after the ulduar release.

It is a grind in every since and shape but can be a lot of fum specially when goofing around with friends. All games are a grind (repetitive) to some degree. All.
