He makes plays, even though he does avoid contact at times. Given the Broncos lack of anyone in front of him he could struggle, but they needs someone at linebacker who can tackle players if and when he gets help up front.

Quite a drop for Stafford.

Just wondering why you have him so low.

Yeah he slid two spots.

I don't like some of the decisions he makes with the football. He is over hyped really. He has experience etc., but locks onto receivers, doesn't have great touch on the ball, and again decisions with the football.

Well, I don't doubt his flaws but it's a pretty weak QB draft year and I'm sure there's gotta be a QB needy team at a much higher spot in the top 10. Sanchez does exhibit a lot of those similar flaws but minus the experience too. Being in Pac-10 territory and So Cal, I've seen a lot of his games (unfortunately). Don't like to say so but I agree with Carroll in that Sanchez does have a long way to go before he can be an NFL starter.

I figure his upside is higher so he'll get drafted higher. And with Shaun Hill there to hold the fort for a year, he can get some more seasoning.

But Jacksonville is another QB starved team that could jump up and garb a signal caller.

From a team knowledge standpoint, sending a 3-4 DE to San Diego seems a little weird as they let Olshansky walk specifically because they thought they could replace them with guys on the team.

    And an even worse post.

I can't see us bypassing Jenkins, if he fell that far. for English who is likely to fall out of the 1st himself after his mediocre workouts. Jenkins best combine 40 was a 4.51 hand held, his best 10 yd time was 1.47, which is excellent, and his 3 cone, which is a great indicator of quickness and agility, is one of the best of the past ten or so combines at 6.59. Jenkins falling to 25 would be manna from heaven IMO. I haven't even given any thought to it having a chance of happening.

Are you making your mock draft how you think they will go, or how you think they should go?

Did Boomer contribute to your mock draft or has hanging around him so much gotten you to talk/type like a Limey? I counted 565 usages of "whilst" in your mock draft.

English system. I was raised in it too.

And, it was 566, don't cut me short.

I am doing it right now, exploring different scenarios. Some have the Jets taking a quarterback high, some don't. I figure if Sanchez is gone early to either SF or JAX, then it leaves a project in Freeman and someone who does not always make good decisions with the football. With Ryan being a defensive coach, I figured he'd prefer more of a finished product at least initially, and with the talent they already have. The vets won't sit through a losing season for very long as they break in a new QB.

It also is a matter of style of play Marvin. Schwartz will probably bring a blitzing style and need a solid corner. The Eagles need a good man to man cover guy, they get it in Butler. Jenkins still didn't run all that great, but neither did others. Jenkins gets bypassed as I think the the Titans could want more of a playmaker at the position in terms of interceptions etc. They could go with Jenkins as they have liked bigger corners in the past, so we'll see. It's hard as there are not a great number of corners to place in the first. And, with some of the signings recently, teams like the Saints and Ravens have somewhat dropped out of the race for 1st round corners IMO.

Who do you think he goes to marvin?

He's fine. I never want people to just agree with me for the sake of agreeing with me. I'd rather be questioned than just accepted with a cart blanche - just give me a reason, anything will do. Now, though, if he could actually tell me why he thinks so that would be much, much more helpful in terms of better discussion and criticism(s).

Could be Joey, although I have to wonder who else might they target? If one of the top two tackles slide, then they could grab one, sure. Do they like Stafford or Sanchez enough? Meh, not that high I don't think either. I don't think this draft turns into the Alex Smith draft where a QB is chosen number 1 simply because he is a QB.

Linebacker? Not with Tatupu, Peterson and a Franchised Leroy Hill. There is no corner worth it and they already have a bunch of money tied up in a WR. Where do they go? Raji that high? Maybe.

    Nice work.

I don't see Beanie Wells going anywhere near New Orleans though. The Saints are pretty confident in Pierre Thomas and have every reason to be. I think Pierre Thomas starts next season and in the future for New Orleans. Draft a RB in the mid rounds (Shonn Greene/Javon Ringer type 3rd-4th round prospects) is a possibility... But in the first round? Nah... just don't see it happening.

Very interesting mock that I could see panning out like that.

I cant say I agree with it for many teams/players, but I like it because its definately much different than most of them out there.

Stafford seems to be a draftnik polarizer for sure, either hes #1 overall or hes dropping like a rock. Personally, I think his skill set is to good to pass up. Hes definately got more work to do than say, Peyton Manning did, but I think he can and will. I dont think he is JaMarcus Russell 2.0 with a cannon arm and no real desire (it seems) to improve himself. I think Stafford needs to be pushed and coached, but I think he will listen and improve. And in Detroit hes definately entering onto a team that can afford to sit him for a year while they let him learn and upgrade the team some.
And lets face it, he can lock into Calvin Johnson all day every play and it might not matter ;)

Having Orakpo and Brown go before Curry is interesting. Can see it happening though, both teams are definately in need of some major passrushing. Curry is a great overall prospect, but im not sure he is the fit that those 2 teams are looking for.
The Bengals I think will pass on Crabtree for Raji. Remember, this is a team that was dying to get Ellis last year but had the Saints leapfrog them. I dont think they pass on that again, especially considering they now have Coles and still have CJ. There is enough WR depth to be able to get a good player in round 2 or even 3 possibly.

And Im not sure the Texans go WR. Ive been throwing around Peria Jerry alot myself for them. The DT spot held by bust Travis Johnson may be the weakest part of that team right now. Unless they figure they have a shot at someone like Brace or Marks in the second, they might go for it. We know they like to spend early on the lines.

And anyway, "good" or "bad" its always fun and interesting to see other peoples takes on this kind of thing, thanks for sharing :)

They do need DT, Raji could fit I think. And they could still go Crabtree. TJ isnt a spring chicken, and they still dont have much behind him. Branch has missed like 4+ games every year for the past 4-5, Burleson is coming of major knee surgery, and the rest of the WRs were plucked from the 90210 cast.

A wildcard for them as well would be QB. Hasselbeck has some legit injury concerns and isnt getting any younger. With a new coach stepping in ...

Seattle is interesting to say the least, you could have a couple of players going there. I wonder if they don't target a guy like Sen'Derrick Marks in round 2 considering their slot. Quick up the field type player. Maybe, then there is Hasselbeck.

As far as the Bengals, Palmer was pretty concerned regarding Hous coming back. Coles is no where near the player T. J. is and CJ could be on his way out. He must have alienated himself somewhat in that locker room and he is 31 already.

Coles may stay, but Johnson? I don't know about that after this year at 32 before the season starts. Crabtree needs to work on pro style routes a bit anyways and getting acclimated to the pro game rather than throwing him to the fire may be a good way to start him out.

And they took Pat Sims last year, he played well enough. So they are completely devoid of talent up front, but getting another defensive end or tackle in round 2 and a offensive tackle in round 3 like Gerald Cadogan, Sebastian Vollmer, Phil Loadholt depending how the board has been depleted etc. Maybe even Andre Smith in round 2? Who knows.

TJ took a big step back last year too though, and hes also 31. Still, alot will depend on what they do with Chad I suppose. Still in awe they passed up that Redskins deal. And how Marvin Lewis still has a job is beyond me. This is, to me, a franchise headed in completely the wrong direction. I would hate to be Carson right now.

A robust vocabulary is commendable, but when you use the word "whilst" in a mock draft, you just look pompous ***.

Boomer, if you want to write a mock draft for Arsenal, feel free to use "whilst", "lorry", "crumpets", "crisps", and all that other ENGLISH crap. This is American Football we're discussing, so let's talk AMERICAN, dammit! Oh, and I think "douche" is a French word.

yes, I'm joking. Sarcasm over the internets is not always discernable.

I like it!, obviously since English has been my first choice for #25 fro some time now. ;), although I don't think he makes it past NE and maybe not even past the Bears.

I think a dark horse candidate for taking a QB could be The Jags. Garrard doesn't seem to be working out to good and they don't have any other options, so maybe.

Trying different things Padre, seeing where players will go, examining different scenarios. Some things I like some things I don't.

Well, with regards to Seattle and Curry, they franchised Leroy Hill, they have Tatupu and Peterson already, why add Curry? They have issues along their defensive line as well.

I half want to have the Jags take a QB there, but can't do it. They have little behind and with Garrard.

Not a chance (IMO) Curry makes it past the Chiefs..as in -0- chance.

Strategically speaking, the Jags signed Tre Thomas to play LT, meaning Del Rio is moving into survival mode as a Head Coach, taking a Qb would mean Del Rio is basically giving up...not going to happen, not after they re-upped Gerrard for large money.

To me the Jags will go Harvin, instant production, fan base knows him, the Jags are forever struggling to sell tickets.

New Hc in Seattle, but Walter Jones is getting olllldddd...to me they signed Housh so they could bypass Crabtree and go Tackle.

3 in the first 7, Detroit IMO goes with Stafford, then between the tackles and the OLB/DE's, that will be the top of the draft.

Seattle could try and squeeze another season out of W Jones, but Curry and Orakpo go top 6.

No positional players like Rb or Wr are really in the running for top 6 picks, not after Crabtree's foot problems surfaced, there just are not the players this year.

  35. MrClean

    MrClean Inglourious Basterd Club Member

I'm feeling more and more like Detroit won't go Stafford. Martin Mayhew said he wants to first build a strong defense and Curry and Orakpo are the two safest picks in the draft. One of them will be #1 overall. Then Detroit can look for a LT at 20 or 33 if they wish or go more Defense. If Detroit's pick bombs they get set back another 5 yrs again. Stafford is no Manning or Palmer as a slam dunk pick IMO. Curry or Orakpo or J Smith = safe picks and all pieces that would be very vital in building a good team.
Seattle to me is a slam dunk to take a LT as is KC to take Curry if he's there.
If I am Detroit though I'd take Curry, but I could see them taking Orakpo possibly.
I'd guess there will be a run on the OTs early. Everyone knows they are so expensive and the only way to get a franchise LT is usually to draft one.
Cincy looks like a good chance to take one of the OTs, as does Oakland and SF. Andre won't fall out of the first round.
Also, I hope Raji goes to a 3-4 team.

The only picks that are kinda hard to see happening are...(However the rest fits the molds for GM's, current rosters, new coaches & rumors on players.)

    4). EVERETTE BROWN - DE/OLB - FLORIDA STATE

Just seems about 10 spots to high. While he does have the look and measurements of a great athlete, his inconsistency has been exploited by his game film. I think he will be a mid to late first round pick.

14). CHRIS "BEANIE" WELLS - RB - OHIO STATE

His stock is rising as it should, but the Saints could use a ton of help with the defense. They have one of the best offenses in the NFL. Reggie Bush is not a full time back & Deuce has been released. I still think they will go for defensive player here. If M. Jenkins falls this far...they will have the envelope in before you can say Ginn. Beanie might goes as high as 9 to the Packers, but I think a team will trade up for him around 16 - 21.

    15). JEREMY MACLIN - WR - MISSOURI

Granted that if the Jags & 49er's pass on him he could easily slide to 15. But I think the Jags will roll the dice once again on a WR in round one. They currently do not have a WR that scares even a high school team. Not sure if you changed it b/c it is a popular pick & you wanted to mix it up. The JAGS have drafted some good young talented DE's. They need to have a replacement for Henderson soon, but not within 2 seasons. The JAGS could take a DT not saying they will not, just that WR, CB, OL, & LB are more pressing needs.

    19). MATTHEW STAFFORD - QB - GEORGIA

If he does indeed free fall out of the Top 9 picks, the 49er's would roll the dice on him over USC's QB Mark Sanchez. That could mean that the JETS would get Mark...

    28). DARIUS BUTLER - CB - CONNECTICUT

The Eagles are just fine with the CB's. They have more pressing concerns with the Safeties, WR, & OL. I just cannot see them drafting a corner in round one. They will look into adding one, but in later rounds 4+.

30). ALPHONSO SMITH - CB - WAKE FOREST

The Titans have lost a major part of the defense. But even when they had the headstomper, they could not get the job done b/c of the offense. I think they will look for WR multiple times in this draft, starting in round one. They have a very solid secondary & very underrated. Their offense is killing them...they will take the best WR on the board in round one.

32). MALCOLM JENKINS - CB - OHIO STATE

Funny thing about the 40ty times...you can prepare & work on the start until you get it...lol. His 40ty time will not scare away this many teams to allow him to drop this far. Even if he plays S in the NFL, he will find a home before the 20th pick. He is just to talented to drop this far.

    ...

Overall I like the mock draft... :)

Nobody can ever guess what the TOP 32 slots will be, there are too many R. Speilman & Wanny's out there for that to happen. Some teams will reach for need, hell Miami might be one of them in the 1st round. Then some teams will take what many think are lock starters and get a bust. With that said...nice job on the mock draft. It would not be a mock draft unless you had some weird selections.
