This signing fits the mold

Green exactly fits the mold of what we saw last year from the Trifecta. They look to find guys that are under the radar about 4-6 years into their careers that show promise. I really don't know much about Green, have read good and bad comments. So I am going to side with the Trifecta and put my faith in them that they see a guy with enough talent, coupled with some real NFL experience to mold into a solid player, help get to the next level by coaching them up, at their position, in this case of course cornerback.

Still think we will draft a rookie if one is there at the right spot. But a rookie, no matter how good in college, is going to have growing pains playing at CB.

 

Two things, First Greens success or the lack there of, could have been a problem with the system, and nor so much the player. Second, I seem to remember people saying the same about Goodman when we signed him a few years back and up till last year many were still calling for a replacement.

I am all for letting the guy show us what he has in our system before sticking a fork in him. I happy for the signing, it opens our options in the draft, will make it harder for other teams to try and predict what our moves might be. Just food for thought.

 

Folks...Green is not the 'savior' at CB. He's a depth signing, just like Goodman was, like Renaldo Hill was and like Nate Jones was....some of those have turned out very good, some not so good...Worry about who we draft at the CB position, because those will be the guys the Trio expects to fill the starting roles...Besides on our first 'depth chart' they don't list Green as the starting CB...Jason Allen is...That in itself may cause some to worry, but they have seen enough from Allen to project him there now. That means that if the right CB is not available at #25 or #44, they have some leeway to take the BPA which is how this team will improve, not from second-tier FAs...

 

I think we draft a CB very early in the draft and they will compete for the Starting job

 

This scouting report may be fine talking about a LB prospect you can take off the field in passing downs but when you're talking a starting CB prospect how does that assessment not make him "bad"?

I live in Arizona and watch Cardinals games on tv when Miami is not on. I agree with the post above. He is very good tackler but bad on coverage. I did see that faked injury too and I cannot believe he does that I hope we can improve his coverage skills, if not then he can be star in special teams.......

 

Hope he works out... Ken Lucas has now been cut too! Should we snag him up as well?

 

I disagree. Obviously until the contract specifics come out we can't know if it was a "panic" move or not but I feel that we needed to address the CB position, not the STARTING CB position. It's great to have good starters but it's better to have good starters AND good depth. You can't expect every player the FO signs to be a pro-bowler all star starter. And I don't think that's what Green was signed for. I think he was signed because he's shown potential, he's entering the prime of his career, can play special teams, can provide depth at the CB position where we just need warm bodies right now AND prolly came on the cheap. I'm sure you're correct that we'll still draft a corner. Saying that is like saying the eagles will draft a lineman. It's a foregone conclusion. But at least now we have more depth at the position which gives us more options which gives us greater flexability. And the great teams always have those traits.

So in summation just because Green isn't yet the stud CB that everyone thinks this team needs doesn't mean the FO made a mistake.

 

So lets say we draft a CB and he beats out Green for the #2 CB spot. Why would you even want Green as your nickel? Based on what I bolded, its no wonder he dropped to 5th on Arizona's depth chart. You dont want your weakest pass defender coming in with nickel and dime formations.

Last time I checked, nickel and dime defenses were not meant to stop the run. If anything, Eric Green's skillset sounds more like a SS than a CB.

If we wanted a CB for cheap, I think we missed out on Leigh Bodden.

I dount it. We need to save some roster space at CB for whoever we draft. We need some young cheap talented CB's and the draft is the best place for that

 

Sorry but some of the dialogue in this thread reminds me of the "Oh my God we just signed Noodle Arm Pennington"!!!!... stuff I read last year. No not everyone responded that way, but quite a few were in pre-panic mode others swore he was just going to be a back up, etc.
Jason Allen is a very good CB. Eric Green will be an adequate CB for us.

 

I don't know how much he has left in the tank, but the ravens are releasing Rolle.

Could we also look at him at CB?

What this means is that we don't HAVE to pick a cb with our first pick. We have enough talent in the secondary now that we can put together a somewhat okay defense. We'll almost certainly pick up a couple db's but now we have the luxury of picking best player available and not for sheer panicked need.

 

Rolle is 32 and will be entering his 13th season. But he is still a great CB I wonder how much he has left in the tank.

Who is to say Eric Green was brought in to be a starter? What if he was brought in for depth?

 

Bill Parcells prefers corners who are bigger than Rolle, weight wise anyway. At no time during his tenures with the Giants, Pats, Jets or Cowboys did they sign as a FA or draft a CB in the first 3 rounds who weighed less than 195 lbs, except Terrence Newman who goes about 188. Not that it pertains to Rolle since he is 6' even or so, every corner has been at least 5-11 using those same parameters. He did inherit some small corners like Aaron Glenn and Ray Mickens though. His penchant for big corners was never more evident than when he converted 6'2" 210 lb safety Marcus Coleman to corner back when he was coaching the Jets. At the time it was a real head scratcher to most observers until Coleman played pretty well at the position.

 

Green has a strong special teams background as one would expect playing for Frank Beamer in college, so it would seem to me he'd be someone you'd want to give consideration to as a gunner.

 

This is like our Randy Starks signing from last year. Didn't have the stats, but played good football for us.

 

Really, I'm not here to tell you Dolphins fans that you just got a bad player, by no means is Eric Green a bad player. He's just young, and never played to his prime here. Eric could make a switch to SS as someone here has mentioned, but it wasn't happening in Az. with Adrian Wilson back there. His hands are that bad, he drops passes that would be picked by lineman, its like he gets to excited when he sees the ball. Eric Green is one of the nicest guys off the field, took the time to take pictures with both of my kids and would always sit and chat with Cardinals fans up in Training camp after practices were over. He is fast, but not Ricky Williams, Dion speed. His leaping abilities are so-so, his hands are bad, and his coverage is god awful one on one. In zone he does very well. Leaving pretty much no chance for a receiver to catch a ball once he makes contact. He hits like a truck, his man coverage skills are weak, and his character is high. You got a great guy, decent football player added to your team. I will miss Eric here in Zona, but I wish him the best in Miami. Good luck to you guys this season.

I'm nevertheless optimistic. Our secondary coach, Todd Bowles has made a living teaching guys how to hold on to INTs. If he's got it in him at all Bowles will bring it out.

 

I think its a solid pick up. Lets hope he shows improvement in stats for this season.

 

People who are looking for the big 3 to sign an instant starter at this date are looking at the impossible. IMHO we just signed a better depth guy, who will improve the special teams.
