We need a big red zone target that can go up and catch a pass, one that can block and take the pressure off of Ginn. Someone like Kenny Britt. I can see Coles coming in not Harrison, but even with Coles we need that big target.
I totally agree that having that big target to throw to in the endzone is a huge asset. But, teams like the Colts really haven't had that type of receiver the past 10 years. The Pats didn't have one during their 3 SB run. IMO though, it's an asset, not a necessity.
One problem with that thought, well two problems. Manning & Brady. In Harrison and in Coles you are really getting what you have in Bess and Cam but older. While I can see Coles coming in due to his Chemistry with Pennington, I don't see Harrison coming here.
I don't think teams would double Marvin. They were doubling Wayne last year and Harrison still couldn't get anything done with Peyton Manning throwing to him. Teams would have no reason to double him. He's undersized and struggled to get open, which is definitely not a good fit with Chad's arm.
Don't be surprised if this happens Marvin could be EXACTLY the right guy for us at WR at this time, for a short term. And there are numerous reasons why. We have young talent, but they need a vet to help them develop. Who better in the game right now? He can mentor our guys, teaching them how to get open. We have a young QB, who better for him to work with then the WR who has helped Manning become one of the best QBs in the NFL over the last decade? We will never be a pass happy offense as the Colts have been, but helping Henne learn how to read defenses as well as help to develop his relationships with the WRs. He isn't going to command a huge salary even for 2-3 years deal. Bill doesn't normally make a big splash in FA. Additionally we have spent a good deal already and the draft is still ahead of us. He still has solid hands and knows how to get open, coupled with Penny's accuracy will be very effective with anything within the 30 yard range anywhere on the field. Not bad for the guy who could be our #3 WR. Even if he has lost a step, defenses won't be able to afford to NOT pay close attention or allow us to pick up yards on every pass play. That translates into more openings for Ginn, Cam and Bess, while Marvin will also have his ops to contribute. Agreed he is NOT the #1 WR we could try to get in a TJ or Coles. But there are a lot of other pluses that Marvin would bring that simply can't be ignored and I doubt the trifecta would. It may come down to if they really believe that Ginn has the ability to become that true #1 or not. Will be interesting, it is an area of need, no doubt!
I don't see how he can excel with us when he couldn't in the Colts offense. Teams single covered him last year and shut him down so what is he going to bring to this offense?
As a Dolphins fan, if history has taught us nothing, it should have taught us this. Old vets are usually released for reasons. We have brought in countless vets over the yrs that have given us mixed results. But mainly not worked out for us. Harrison is a one yr, two yr tops solution for us. IMO if we are not a superbowl contending team then why bring in a one or two yr "rental" player?
Harrison was released because he was slated to make about 10 million next year. The Colts wanted him to restructure his contract but Harrison didn't want to; thus he is released.
Don't see what the guy could bring beyond depth and mentoring. Just my opinion, of course, but he appears washed up and his best days are several years behind him.
Actually he could have made more then that with incentives, etc. He was cut because he wasn't worth that amount of money. I live close to Indy bro, unwillingly I seen alot of his play last yr. He is nowhere near the caliber he use to be. IMO, at this point he isnt worth a roster spot on a rebuilding team.
I am not leaning one way or the other regarding Harrison. I won't mind if we get him and I won't mind if we don't. You said there was a reason why older WR's get released and I was simply stated why Harrison was getting released. The fact that the Colts WANTED to restructure his contract and keep him says a lot though. Is he what he used to be? No, but he is still a guy you want on your team.
I don't necessarily think he's done, people seem to be thinking Indy cut him outright. They very much wanted to keep him, they just couldn't afford his salary. I'd like a decent vet receiver, but I think Harrison wants to get paid.
Biggest problem with Colts last year on offense was their line wasn't protecting Manning. Also he started season hurt. Moreover Harrison was their key guy. Our line will protect Penny. Penny will be healthy Marvin won't be our #1 WR. He can be very effective in a diminished role. Let a defense ignore him and see what kind of problems he causes for them.
True but a player coming out of Oakland is given the benefit of the doubt, because its Oakland. Indy is a well ran franchise. Harrison may still have a step left, I just dont think he is right for this team.
Id be happy with the move. Although theres probably recievers out there who would have a better fit with the team.
