Easy on, my friend. Passionate feelings are good, until they, perhaps, cause us to over react. Shalom...

Agreed. The NFL makes a lot of money. It probably hasn't been hurt much by the recession, so why should its employees or the NFLPA have to suffer.

Veteran contracts, I have no problem with. Those guys earned their pay.

Rookie contracts, especially a top 20 draft pick, I have a huge problem with. That's spun out of control. Alex Smith made 25 million dollars and sucks at his job. Not many organizations or companies around the world would give that to a guy who sucks at their job.

    Easy there, pal.

Just because you support a position doesn't make you an ***-kisser. I could say the thing of you and Huizinga.

The problem with your argument is that much of the money in the NFL comes from their huge television deals, which don't expire for another year. The only effect the recession will currently have may be on the size of signing bonuses given. Now if the recession still has a major grip on the nation when it's time to re-up the tv contracts, then you might see the salary cap structure take a hit, and salaries then level off.

Major League Baseball, on the other hand, gets much of its cashflow from their own local tv deals and stadium revenue. They are bound to be more immediately effected by the recession.

But should he be the highest paid Right Tackle in the league? Is he the best RT in the league?

    No and no.

    But who is?

I'm sure there are RTs that are better than Vernon. Probably not many, but there are. And I'm certain that if any of those RTs test the FA market after next year then they'll become the highest paid RT in the league.

He is absolutely a pretty damn good one though.

The headline that says he is now the highest paid RT in the league means nothing unless he sees every cent of it which is doubtful. But then again by the time he's in his 3rd year of the contract, he'll be the 5th,6th, 7th highest paid....

Is he the best RT we are possibly going to be able to get this offseason? Yes.

cdz, i agree, on the surface it seems something should be done at Center, however the more i think about it the more I am thinking as of right now we may not need to do anything at Center.

We have our bookends, and Satele is a good center who can move when needed, snaps the ball well.

Satele seemed to have a drop off especially after smiley went down. I have a feeling if Thomas is what were expecting from him, with his size, and smiley's leadership and communcation and play comes back as well, Satele might actually be quite good.

Sure the good NT's got through samson and INSERT BACKUP GUARD HERE. But they didn't seem to have as much of an effect when their double team was Samson and Smiley. And i don't think the NT will have as much success when the double is samson and donald/smiley.

Remember a good NT is drawing double teams, sure one on one they might push our center around, but maybe the FO is thinking that won't be the case if Thomas and Smiley are there.

I dunno just a thought. I like how their keeping the pieces we know work. I could see some depth added, or possibly a new center in the draft.

I would love Jason brown in the mix but i don't know if that's the best way to approach it, if it needs to be fixed.

Should be interesting to see what they do and we see how they really feel about Samson.

My point was either do something about it, i.e organise a boycott or whatever, or don't whine about it.

You sure are flailing around with your arguments.

You state that Vern Carey shouldn't make $15 million. Okay, then answer the following questions:

    1. How much should Vern Carey make?
    2. How did you come to this decision?
    3. Is $12 million too much?
    4. How much should a top-5 RT in the league make?
    5. Do you have more experience and information than Parcells and Ireland and Sparano in determining how well Vern Carey played last year and his ability to sell his services to the highest-bidder in a free market?
    6. Are you a Ross-*** kisser because you think players are paid too much?

Look, I get it. Some people think athletes (and in this case, Vern Carey) are paid too much. But they never explain why they are paid too much and they never explain what they think a player should be paid, and most importantly they never explainhow they come up with this perfect dollar amount.

Vern Carey just signed a big contract. He deserved it. if you believe in a free market, then you should applaud Carey. If he didn't "deserve" the contract, he wouldn't have gotten it.

I believe whole heartedly in what plan our FO has. They put numbers on ALL our players with very little wiggle room. They signede him to something that would work for us and our future. I'm not at all worried about Vernon's contract. I'm glad we can scratch that position off our needs list.

I do think we need to find a better center. I have lasting memories of Satele getting pushed around like a rag doll against good NT's.

for ****s sake! it was a general statement about how athletes make a ton of money. And it was one of those "take a step back and say wow" moments. But everything on this message board gets taken out of context so ******* quickly and you get comments from every angle with everyone wanting you to explain everything you have already said.

I'm not Jeff Ireland or Bill Parcells and I don't decide how much players get paid and I don't want to. You are taking may original post out of context, asking me bull**** questions I never claimed I could answer or want to. It was a general statement about the world of sports particularly the NFL, MLB, and NBA. That's it!

    Easy there, Tex.

You made a generalized statement about how much money athletes make.
Other posters, in various ways, wanted to make the counter-point that if the athletes get paid less, it simply means more $$$ for the owners (who are already 100 times richer than the athletes anyway).

The athletes' salaries simply are more public knowledge. The owners are 100x richer.
The $$$ is there. It's just a matter of who keeps it (owners vs. athletes).
That's why I have no problem with athletes' salaries. The owners/GMs are smart guys.....they know what they can afford.
