I'm as happy as a hog in a waller. Vernon gets his 15 mil gar'on-t and we keep a home grown guy in the fold. As for Gross IMHO he's the guy who was overpaid; with only one more year in the league he's got 3 times the pen. and 10.75 more sacks. For the life of me I don't see where you guys think Gross is so much better; course I've never cared much for Carolina myself.
IMO Carey had a disappointing year. The first move this front office made though, was firing it's OLine coach. There is talent going untapped or misused. Carey is a young, average RT with pro bowl potential and versatility. It's a good signing.
According to the National Football Post http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/02/carey-gets-a-new-deal/ I haven't seen the guaranteed money or signing bonus yet, but it's good to know that Carey will be with us for a number of years.
great news for us IMO. Carey is a very good OT. several teams were chomping at the bit to sign him if we didnt. I think we bursted alot of teams' bubble's today by resigning Carey after not tagging him yesterday. I really dont think we overpaid for him. He was going to get paid that kind of cash elsewhere, I guarantee you that. Especially at how quickly the FA pool at OT dried up. It was important for us to sign him, its now one less draft position we need to worry about. Also, its nice to have both ends of our offensive line strong, and stable for several years to come!
Great news not only for our O-line but for what it means draft wise. A team that may have wanted Carey to seal up a Tackle spot will now have to go to the draft for one, sooner than later.
I love that for the first yr in awhile we dont have to concentrate as much on the Oline as we have in the past. I still think we have some issues on it, but the Tackles being solidified is a huge step forward for us as a building block, IMO. This years draft I think excites me more then last I think. We are building to be a better team and to potentially make yet another run at postseason. Carey was def. a great resigning.
I'm very very pleased about this. So pleased in fact I may have to get me a Vernon Carey jersey. The contract is about right in my eyes, considering he can play left tackle.
“He was the best [tackle] left,” an NFC source said. “If he goes to free agency, that guarantee probably hits 20 [million]. It would have been a little bit of a gamble, but with the circumstances the way they are, someone was going to give it to him.” http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Aj_aPGNGqEy5Kmv1pvX3OCFDubYF?slug=cr-combinewinnerslosers022009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Only $15 million guaranteed. As I previously stated, this is the only number that matters. Seems reasonable to me. Posted via Mobile Device
He's going to make 15 Million in 2009. Kiss Brown goodbye. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/21/carey-contract-details-unveiled/
We could sign Brown to a backloaded deal easily. If Carey makes 18 million in his first two years and 15 million THIS YEAR that means he only maked 3 million next year. To me this is a genius move. Carey gets his money, but he also gets a very small base salary that we can live with for years.
True enough, but if we're only 28 under, 15 goes to Carey, 5 goes for rookies at least, that doesn't leave much to sign many more people. Giving Carey 15 means that there is a reason for it. The reason is likely that they don't expect to make a big splash in FA and not that they're going to cut it real close. Giving Brown the largest Center contract ever, which is what he wants, would be considered a large splash.
Congrats to Vernon he deserved it for his professionalism and production. The guy has had a revolving door at the HC/OC positions since he arrived and has done everything that has been asked and done it well. Hooray for one of the good guys.
PFT is garbage. i highly doubt hes going to get 15 million this year. 15 mil gauranteed yes, but not this year.
Well from what I hear we have an extra 10 million on top of that 28 million due to unachieved performance bonuses. If thats true it's the same as if we gave Carey 5 million from the original 28 million in space.
Vernon Carey's contract #'s unveiled http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/21/carey-contract-details-unveiled/
The money spent on Carey was well worth keeping the continuity of this young talented line together. Get Smiley and Thomas back, some big depth and more time to grow together and our line is going to be awesome. Last year was just a taste
Hey guys, nice to meet you guys, my first post on this site, and coming from that other site which i never go to because they are all trash, i though I would never post on forums again, but I have to say I have seen a lot of class on this forum and it made me want to post again, good to see a good classy forum. Also, I wanted to talk about this topic, I agree with the jets fan who hit it head on imo, carey is worth 6-30 or 6-35 max, I think he should have taken a performance based contract at 6-30 if he got probowls he could have increased that pay by 2 mil a year or so. I dont know how exactly the contract works but thats what I think it should have been since last year wasnt his best he shouldnt be looking for lots of money he should be looking for a decent payday with a chance to earn more money because he needs to get back to prowbowl level. This year was about as crazy as it gets so when it gets more stable hopefully carey will improve, I think he is worth the extra money but I think it should have been based on production through incentives, idk how it is now though. Anyways, I only think this way because we still have a lot of holes on this team and just because we didnt get somebody in FA we should not overpay just to keep somebody else around, although I think its a good move because i like carey a lot, hes put up with all the bs of the past two coaches and been solid the whole way through. Anyways im glad to be here guys, keep up the good posts, now get bell signed
tnx , I app it, pennsylvania, my popup blocker accidentally blocked ur chat invite, its off now, you can invite me anytime, and yes that was the site I was talking about, I dont even like to talk about that trash site, I tried to pm you that back but it said I had to have 10 posts before I can pm people so thats why I posted it on here.
hey guys, now correct me if im wrong, but doesent the signing bonus get spread over the life of the contract? so if his base salary is 800k and a 2mil roster bonus then if the signing bonus is spread over the life of the conract then his cap hit this year is like around 5mill or so right? im sure the cap guys can help us out but i thought thats how that went.
12 million signing bonus over 6 years = 2 million per, and an $800,000 base salary would equal a 2.8 million cap hit. The question is in the workout and roster bonuses. I would think they would count against next year's cap or else they could have just given it to him up front.
Is Vernon Carey the person/player really worth 40 million? He's now the highest paid RT. Every time a FA is signed to a team they become the "highest paid" player at their position. **** man! They have got to put a freeze on this, it's getting ridiculous!! Does anyone else see something wrong wit this?
There is nothing wrong with it. Carey will get cut before this contract expires. The total contract number is not important. Posted via Mobile Device
Looks like a very good deal for their salary cap. 18 million thru the first two season. I'd like to see how his salary is structured thru the entire deal though. The highest paid RT in the league is interesting as well. Makes me think some of it might be backloaded.
Carey is a pretty darn good RT. Plus he can play 4 positions on the LOS so I would say its worth it. Some of the monies might be backloaded so that in the final year or two they'll have some leverage to either cut him or restructure. With cutting him more likely if they need cap room.
Don't like the taste in the middle. Agree with keeping Carey but we need to do something at center. A competition between Satele, Smiley, Thomas and a draft pick for the guard spots may yield the answer.
This is one of the biggest issues in the NFL today. The players expect the pay to raise each season, it does not matter to them if they are really better than last years guy. But keep in mind this could not happen without teams willing to pay it. Thanks to all the Danny Boy (Redskins), Jones (Cowboys), and maybe even Ross...lol. Down the road this is really going to hurt the NFL. Sooner or later the contracts will be too much for the player. The Owners rely on the fact that it's major sponsors will continue to STAY IN BUSINESS and all the royalty fees to keep coming in...The NFL royalty fee is a minimum of $100K per year. That could be an issue sooner than we think...
The guaranteed money is $15M, the bonus is $12M, that's spread out over the length of the contract...the remainder is his base salary...his cap hit will, based on those figures be only $5M...we can live with that...
The problem is that we as fans keep on putting money into the owner's pockets. We buy merchandise, cable TV packages, PSLs etc. all the way up to corporate boxes and the like and the owners are obligated to return a certain percentage of the money we put into their pockets to the players who generate the product that we like to buy. If you thinks its ridiculous how about you organize a boycott of professional sports and its associated merchandise. Lots of people talk about it but pro sports are generating more money than ever.
My only issue, is that it's a major slap in the face to everyone that is being hurt by this recession, which is basically the entire United States. The NFL knows people (fans) are losing their jobs, left and right. My employer UPS, just laid off 35 people last friday. The economy is tough right now. So, Al Davis goes out there and gives a corner a guarenteed 3 year 50 million dollar deal basically yesterday. I am not sure what needs to be done...I guess we all need to start working on our 40 times... Whats ironic is that baseball teams, minus the rediculous Yankees, are sitting tight, and not spending much on FA. Never would Manny Ramirez be unsigned this long. Same with Dunn (recently signed), Orlando Cabrera etc. Baseball is going with 1-2 year contracts and are being very careful with their money. My STL Cardinals did basically nothing this offseason. The Arizona Diamondbacks signed the cheaper 2b Felipe Lopez instead of signing their own Orlando Cabrera, even though Cabrera is hands down a better second baseman, .300 hitter. Heard the other day, that it's the middle teir'd players that are really getting hurt right now. Regardless, the FO did a great job. This is better than franchising him. In the two franchise tags the Arizona Cardinals have placed on Dansby, worth a total 18 million, they could have made that a bonus and signed him to a long term deal two years ago.
I don't care how much money the players make. Good for them. Get your money while you can. I see no reason why Vern's salary is a slap to anyone. He is an incredibly talented and skilled athlete. He can perform a task that only 30 people in the world can do well. I hate it when people complain about player salaries. Especially veterans who pay their dues. Posted via Mobile Device
You are dead RIGHT! Why people here are worried about CAP space just because we resigned Vernon to a sweet deal is beyond me. Everyone claims to trust the Tuna man BUT........... So trust the guy already! I do.
