Small thread but just curious; Who will be shocked, and or disappionted if Parcells leaves after the 2009 season, taking into consideration his quote of how he will stay for at least 2 drafts...

well this will be his second draft ....

Seriously though, I not be shocked at all to see him leave after this season is up. Nor would I be shocked if he stays here for another 3-4 years. I would be dissapointed to lose his experience and expertise, but I think Ireland and Sparano are more than capable on their own.

Three to four years would be a godsend... i dont know, but hopefully, if we regress (and i pray to the pord we do not), he stays for the 2010 draft...

Actually I'm taking him for his word. In addition to his saying he would stay for at least a couple of drafts, he also said he would stay until he felt like Ireland and Sparano had the experience to do it without him.
So, when he does step down, I'll just figure Ireland and Sparano are ready to go it alone.

would you feel that way, say,if we go 9-7 in 2009 and he steps down? Myself, I wold like him to stay after something like that, but if he doesnt, I think the fo undation to build through the draft would be there....

I agree. I don't see him around after this next season. He'll have the pieces in place, and have the ball rolling. He's not some spring chicken so his time can be better used elsewhere. I think he's about ready to start watching life and enjoying it a bit, rather than chasing it.

Yeah, I think I'm of the same opinion as you.
If we, for instance end up 9-7 I guess it would bear weighing out whether or not we actually regressed.
In other words did we go 9-7 because of a much harder schedule and just not enough progress? Or did we go 9-7 mostly because we couldn't beat teams we should be able to beat?
Again I expect Parcells to be here until Ireland and Sparano can do it without him. Whether or not Parcells has much or any loyalty to the Miami Dolphins is open for debate. However, one thing that has never been questioned is his loyalty to his friends. Ireland and Sparano by all accounts are people whom he likes and respects. Therefore I would expect him to stick around for their sake if nothing else.
So anyway, if he leaves after this year....? we'll be fine IMO.

I agree... but as far as the schedule is concerned, I would not accept that as a cop out like many others do... unless of course you are the lions, strength of schedule means absoutely nothing to me... you are expected to win your games and thats it, no excuses...

It makes me laugh those who use strength of schedule as an excuse for a season being tough or easy. To those who can distinguish reality from some type "neverneverland" mentality it only gives a false sense of security for the weak.. There are games against division rivals we all play - even. than in winning a division, those division leaders should be just afraid of us as we are of them.

AFCS champs - Lost their first playoff game
AFCN champs - we all know won the bowl
ASFW champs - Anyonw can take
AFCE champs - after 1-15, we won...

Strength of schedule only means [at the end of 2008] (before rosters are set) be prepared to play these teams [in 2009].

I guess to clarify.....I do believe that anything less than winning the division (again) to be a step back. The Pats and Bills and Jets will be playing pretty much the same schedule as we will be playing. So losing the division to them would be a step back. So I could live with 9-7 as long as it's still best in the division.

depends on how fast we achieve his personal goals for the team, i think he will stay until we are a legitimate superbowl contender.

would you be content with going 8-8 like SD, winning the division? My answer; as long as it meant going farther in the playoffs than we did in 2008

I really can see him leaving after this season. Partially because i just dont trust him, and partially because of his recent quotes about staying for a couple of drafts. That being said... even if he does go, Im pretty confident right now in the training/knowledge he's left behind with Ireland and Sparano

I will bet this to any taker, once he retires from here, he will not go to another team AND he will not take the money on the buyout.

I think I'd be more surprised if he were still here for the next draft.

IF, and its a big IF, Bob Knight finds himself in headcoaching one more time, I will take this bet. I can almost promise you if one of them is doing it the other will. Its like a sports rat pack with them.

Whenever Parcells leaves, even if it were to be tomorrow, I would be thankful for the time that we had him here and for all the great things he's already accomplished.

Sounds like a eulogy, but that's about how I'd feel.

I don't see him leaving as long as we keep going in the right direction and the ownership group let's him do what he needs to do and provides him the resources to do so.

I think he left dallas because he didn't want to play with the JJ headgames, he's been around too long for any of that. I believe its a different atmosphere in Miami so far, as long as the drama stays low, IMO i think he sticks around.

It shouldn't shock any of you. Bill stays places less and less years ever since he left the Giants. He promised Wayne two years, I expect after two years he'll be back with ESPN or another network only to unretire for a 73rd time in two years and join another club for two years.

Two years of Parcells is something to be valued and something to be happy about. I'd rather have two years with him than anyone else in the NFL. The Jets might not be world beaters but at least he made us somewhat respectable. I'll always love him for that, no matter what he ends up doing with Miami or other organizations.

Parcells has obviously already left his mark on the Dolphins in what they accomplished in one year considering the year before all of the NFL considered the Dolphins as the worst team in the NFL. He may be gone after this year but he has had more of an impact on the Dolphins than any one person has in a long, long time. My own personal opinion is that he has already laid the ground work to leave the team in very capable hands in Sparano and Ireland and he has returned pride to the organization. Whatever our record is in 2009 I will still think we are headed in the right direction if this draft is any where near as good as last years draft. If this years draft is not nearly as succesfull as last years then we may all begin to have doubts again, but hopefully thats not going to happen. This years draft may be a key indicator of where we are headed and how fast we might get there considering the success of last years draft.
Drafts have been the Dolphin's achiles heel and is what has put us in the situation Bill Parcells inherited. Future successfull drafts will go a long way toward making the Dolphins an NFL power once again but thats JMO.

I agree. When they failed to make the playoffs, clearly Jerry's presense, magnified a sense of futile regression. Without saying a word, it likely provided Parcell's all the motivation necessary, to pull the ripcord, and eject back into another retirement.

His situation here otoh, might evolve closer to what the 49er's were for Bill Walsh in his waning years. A place to hang his hat, and settle in as resident mastermind, offering wisdom, and direction, whilst his two loyal disciples, pursue his crowning achievement, of one more championship, to complete his legacy.

I know a lot of people think we won't win the East again but I think it's our division to lose. And I think Parcells will leave after next season too. But who knows with that guy.

A nice way to put it.
I've said it before and I still maintain the reason Parcells left (not just Dallas but) all the other teams is because he became frustrated with interference in personnel decisions. That's where the "buying the groceries" sound byte came from. Here in Miami he's been offered the one thing he's never had - final say on how to build the team.
I actually speculate that he'll be here for a few years. How many teams are really truly going to just hand him the keys to the franchise and then step back? At first thought, it might seem like just about any owner would jump at the chance to see the kind of one year improvement that the Dolphins had. But these team owners are also mostly self important egomaniacs. So I'm not convinced that Parcells would find as sweet a deal elsewhere as he has here.
For that matter; while I'm ranting, control issues may have entered into the decision making with Atlanta. Maybe Blank initially said yes but then started hedging on thing the more they talked.
Yeah, yeah, I know common opinion is that he used Atlanta as leverage. But none of us really knows for sure.
Look what went on in Dallas with Reeves. Reeves to Dallas seemed to be a done deal. Then all of a sudden it was a dead deal. Come to find out Jones wanted Reeves to use a time clock, time sheet or something.
