Ah...but Geddy Lee chose artistic merit, and he's still playing arenas while Kip is probably doing what that guy in the pirate costume in the identity theft commercials is doing.
LOVE ATDI. Saw them in Vancouver on the "Relationship of Command" tour in a small venue with about 500 people. It was one of the craziest shows I've ever seen. Simply brilliant. I hate the Mars Volta. Cedric and Omar are undeniably talented people but I think they are trying WAY too hard to proe they are talented. IMO you don't need to wank for 20 minutes of a 22 minute song to prove that you are good. I liked the Sparta split off part of ATDI personally. Sure it was simple, straight forward rock but it was good. I saw them twice live and they were great. Fun show to go to. Jim Ward is a good writer and their drummer (Tony Hajjar who was also in ATDI) is a fantastic player. Dude hits SO HARD.
It's funny to see that name. Devin Townsend has been an icon in Vancouver's "metal" scene for a LONG time. I saw SYL at a tiny venue in 2003. Basically a bar downtown with about 100 people. It was their "warmup" for their tour, it was good stuff. My ex-girlfriends room mate actually did the monitors for a lot of his local gigs when he was doing his solo stuff in between SYL tours and recording. Her boyfriend did some studio work with Townsend on his solo stuff as well. Devin Townsend's early solo stuff is really good. Check out "Ocean Machine:Biomech" or "Infinity" by Devin Townsend. They are a little weird in spots but good stuff none the less.
That will generally turn you into a pretty good band...LOL! Dude is the best voice in metal. Whenever someone here mentions Kamelot I always have to thank you BTW. Never would have heard of them without you mentioning them and now they are top 5 for me. Thanks.
Ain't that the fact, actually the first Khan Kamelot feature I saw was the Cold Winter's Night dvd... not many performers get the whole stage presence thing... he certainly does. He converted me right then and there
Alright, since all my cool bands got taken, I'll throw a couple of names out there: Failure - They only produced a couple of albums, but I really think they're underrated. Fantastic Planet is one of my personal favorites. Deltron 3030 - I may be a Viking, but I still listen to other stuff from time to time. This is a pretty incredible hip-hop album, from start to finish. Love the theme of it too. O.S.I. - It's a supergroup featuring members of Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and Dream Theater. Not as heavy as Opeth or Dream Theater, but pretty good stuff nonetheless. Buckethead - I prefer his more mellow solo work. Some of it is a bit experimental and out there, but albums like Colma, Electric Tears, and Cuckoo Clocks of Hell all have very good, and very mellow, solo stuff on them. Solstafir - Viking Rock. I had to throw some in here. Probably would have picked Turias had In Flames not already taken them. Critique away.
-Solo artist by the name of D. Anson Brody. -Asheru. -if you like britpop, The Rifles -The Great Takeback (shameless self-promotion)
I love that album and it's great. I will add these bands to the list (mostly electronic artists, don't listen to metal): Plaid The Knife Apparat Mesh (from the UK, not that crappy Mesh StL) Iris De\Vision Two Lonesome Swordsmen Ladytron Dot Allison The Presets
Im with you on this one... The Tea Party was going to be my choice as well... outstanding music, lyrics, everything. Its pretty impressive to be able to play regular drums, and guitars like most bands, but to play them as well as these guys do, in addition to all the other instruments from all around the world that these guys play flawlessly, and work into their rock songs flawlessly makes them that much more impressive especially considering they were just a 3 piece... Their dedication to their craft while together was just incredible. It's a shame that after well over 10 years they had to go their separate ways.. A live show like no other I've seen as well... which would explain why i have well over 20 live concerts of theres on my computer Just a solid CANADIAN band doing their thing. Im a bit biased too maybe since they are my favorite band... also they are hometown boys too, born and raised right here in windsor. The drummer is the only one left here in town that im aware of... used to buy his cars where i used to work, and now works at a radio station as a DJ. While i love psychopomp as its an outstanding song... This as well though is one of my favorites for anyone interested... A Certain Slant of Light... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDYIlaaw_yI"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDYIlaaw_yI[/ame] enjoy! I know i do everytime i listen... even if it is over, and over, and over again
oh mother ****ing god you like failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!! check this out... http://fantasticplanet.org/ it's live material.. just thank me now
They're both awesome songs too. I love pretty much all of them but Psychopomp is one song that no matter how many times I listen to it I still get shivers . Sister Awake was one of the first songs I learnt on guitar
A band that's been around FOREVER, keeps making records that absolutely rock, and are from Brooklyn, NY... Riot.
Imma go with: Mum - an icelandic band with beautiful music and more awesome videos Secret Mommy - A glitch one man band that makes awesome music. Their song "String Lake" is da **** Bon Iver - Acoustic soft songs... but damn awesome. Balkan Beat Box - Mixes hip hop, dancehall, gipsy and Klezmer music...
