This was posted in the blog Simon (Boomer) did for Hyde. http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/spo...g/2009/01/tuesdays_with_simon_dolphins_a.html I'm talking with a few of you about this and you're not interested. I wanted to stick this out. First and foremost I think Oher will be long gone. The second issue I have is the money involved and thirdly it's not really what I pictured so I am having a rough time. But since I have time and room to speculate here goes. We resign Carey but not for the top RT money he wants. We instead sign him for Guard money. Due to Oher's off the field red flags he falls to us at #25. It's my understanding he would get paid based upon his position picked in the draft. We stick either guy (Oher/Long) at either tackle spot and move Carey in at R Guard. Leaving our line looking something like this. (O/L or L/O)(Smiley)(Satele)(Carey)(O/L or L/O) which would leave Thomas as a solid backup at guard and maybe Alleman as backup. I'm not really sure how that would work. The issue with money is obviously Long is being payed LT money and if we were to draft Oher and stick him in at LT it would be putting Long at RT being paid heaves of money. Also, Carey may or may not be able to play Guard. Does this intrigue anyone else? Boomer maybe you could give some insight into this thought process? I'd be very interested.
Where do people get this idea from? Where is Carey's quote on what he is expecting to get? Aside from that, everyone wants to be the highest paid player in the league. What he wants and what he needs (in order to accept a deal) are two completely different numbers.
And of course it is intriguing. I imagine many here consider Oher to be a top ten talent, so if he is there at 25, I am sure people would want us to take him.
Well if for no other reason than to make your hypothesis easier for you to project; Carey should be just fine if he was moved inside. He started at RG his senior year.
It's a very interesting theory/hypothesis or whatever you want to call it. I just find it hard to believe he'd slip that far in the draft based on his past alone - Detroit, if anyone, would almost have to take him at 20 if they didn't get one at #1. If it did end up happening, I'd rather Jake stay at LT for now. No reason to move him over after having played so well as a rookie.
let coach tony make his mind up. he know what he is doing . but i am sure there will be a camp battle for sure .
Oher would clearly be the bpa at 25, and I always believe taking bpa in the first round. So it wouldn't even be an issue for me. I would then try to trade Carey to the Vikings for their 2010 2nd and 2011 3rd.
Ya can't bend Carey over and some how talk him into taking a bad deal in the hopes that you land a top ten guy at the 25 spot. This would be crazy talk even if you were talking about doing it in a game. But i'll run with it i'd start Thomas over Smiley and i'd get Satele the blank out of there.
I probably wouldn't even move Carey (unless he didn't have a long term deal) just because we got Oher. Put the 5 best OL out there.
Jake Long going into next year is The Premiere Left Tackle in the game. aint nobody better then that. I watched this man closely this year, in slow motion and over and over again..thomas, clady and whoever you wanna throw in there cannot hold big jakes jockstrap.
I had to read the book about him a couple years ago for school. The kid went through so much adversity
Oher would have to be the next Orlando Pace, like he was touted as in high school, in order to put him at LT instead of Long. From what I've heard about him inconsistency seems to be his problem. I don't want inconsistency at LT, especially when Jake doesn't have that problem. I would be very tempted to take Oher no matter what we do with Carey. But our problems rushing the passer are glaring to me. And I think its a bigger weakness than whatever deficiencies we have with the Oline. Unless we are almost assured of having a solid pass rusher fall to the 2nd round I would have a hard time passing over one and taking Oher in the 1st.
