I been said many time "The best defense is a strong offense". I'm not say the OL is more important than the DL. We need a good OL and DL. I don't feel we actually saw the best defense the dolphins could field this year. IMO Capers didn't use the personnel right. He changed from what Saban had done for two years without changing personnel. All I feel is IMO take the BPA at #1. If the team feels its a DT or DE and will benefit the team for a long time go for it. If they feel it's an OT, than go that way. All I know is Cleveland sucked for two years; add Joe Thomas (pick #3) and their offense is clicking and the defense is fresh all the time.
Aside, from OC (Satele) I could see Parcell flipping the entire OL. Scheme-wise Parcells favors a big power run blocking OL, while Cam had wanted smaller, pulling, trapping OL. IF the Phins could indeed trade down with maybe ATL, Jake Long could fit.
I don't know how you could look at the results of this season and reasonably come to the conclusion that our OL is more of a need than our DL. The OL played admirably all year, and really only showed a propensity to allow rushers to get to the QB when Beck played, which was just another example of the players dictating to Cameron how he should work the depth chart, but that's another topic. Your DL is more important than your OL, at least in the NFL. You could have pro bowlers up and down your OL, and if you can't adequately put pressure on the QB or fill gaps against the run then you won't accomplish a thing in this league. In the case of the Dolphins, we had an OL that played well enough, horrid QB play and decent production from our backs, but our defense, with the possible exception of Will Allen and JT, didn't belong on an NFL field. The result is 1-15. That said, considering drafting a OT in the first round is a bigger risk than drafting a QB in the first, taking Long #1 would be a stupid move on several levels.
Love your post It's not about J.Long necessarily (he likely becomes an All-Star RT - who cares right) Long is not the only salvagable OT of this class... We agree..., for our team it's about all forms of blocking..., our QBs are scared for their lives the runing backs getting crushed behind the line of scrimmage and it's about salary cap..., Oline consistently get the coin..., it doesn't matter how your elite fleet players look without that cohesive unit... The Salary Cap who is getting the money...? LTs - let's see..., oh yeah they keep your QB alive and with cohesion your Offensive is on the field... The Salary cap..., no one deserves 40 million of this class.... trade down and build the Oline and Dline... with draft picks that can contribute right away... This throw an Offensive line coach a bone in the 7th rd thing was plain out stupid... Thank God BP likes the wide road-grader hogs who equalize mammoth DTs and plow thin DE...
I think it's close. Our oline is not nearly as good as people make them out to be. Our pass protection was awful. We'd have eight in the box blocking and multiple defenders would still blow right by them. Even the run blocking that keeps getting praised was bad. We need to upgrade at least LG and RT this offseason. Probably RG as well because I don't think Parcell's will resign Hadnot. So yeah, fixing the oline is just as important as the dline. With that said, the first pick still needs to go on defense. Prospects like Long and Dorsey are just too good to pass up.
