I see a lot of arm tackling in that video. He doesn't really put his body into it. If he's going to play OLB that needs to change. Video didn't really show how well he uses his hands, but thats going to be very important in whatever success he has. I'm sure he's athletic enough, worst case scenario special teamer.
Unified or one of the folks who watch the CFL can speak to arm tackling, but if you look at the "CFL player of the week video" you can see him use his hands on one or two plays. He has a nice body lean and slither, and a good motor, most of the CFL Qb's can run really well, Bishop for example made his bones at KState being a dual threat Qb.
That is something to take into consideration even on tackling. There were a couple plays he HAD to use his arms to reach and grab, but a couple he had a free shot and didn't put much into it. I'd love the take of someone who actually watches CFL football.
This is great for Miami. I'm excited to see what he can do. FO giving him that kind of deal is nuts, I definitely wasn't expecting 4 years. Highly drafted players get those kinda years now. I hope Wake works out in Miami. Cheers
I know nothing about him other then what I just learned in this thread, but that contract has to speak volumes. I can't wait to see him in action.
Im impressed with the signing. I think this guy could turn into something. I still hope we sign some proven talent also this offseason.
I like the signing, low risk and he tore up the cfl. Big difference between the cfl and NFL though, I hope it works out.
He looks bigger than 240 to me. More like 260 IMO.... He's very well put together and has very active feet, takes great angles. Love the highlights. He looks like a great edge player in our system, but I wouldnt be shocked to see him inside either at ILB. I see a little of Calvin Pace in him, but I like his speed more.
Not to be Debbie Downer, but I remember several of these CFL superstars coming in here when JJ had Akin with the BC Lions connection in the front office and only Mark Dixon panned out. We'll see though, there's always the Warren Moons & Kurt Warners of the world: "why not us?".
Brendon Ayanbadejo was also a solid CFL signing. He made the Pro Bowl for 3 seasons with the Bears, meaning we let him go too soon. Another testament to our previous regimes.
True, I can recall CFL players really making an impact, but mostly the ones who stick are "good" not "great" NFL players. For evey Gizmo Williams and Terry Greer or a Bruce Clark, there are equally obscure guys who remained obscure.
Unfortunately, that won't be happening for a long long time. And I mean the season is far away, not that Wake won't be good. BTW, I think we'll see definite signs of how he's progressing by what happens with Crowder, Anderson, Roth, and Moses. Plus what FA's we go after.
He costs us zero draft picks and has a ton of potential. There's nothing to be a downer about in that aspect alone. I'd be less impressed if it was any FO staff but this one. If they saw this much in him, along with all the interest from other teams then it looks to be a great signing.
Anybody know any recent 40 time on him. I know the 4.55 or so from his Pro Day but he seems to be in better shape now than ever but is also heavier. I have a strange feeling this one will work out.
Hi all. Huge CFL fan here. Fan of the Edmonton Eskimos, but I catch almost all CFL games in the season so I saw a lot of Cam Wake the two seasons he played in the league. He has been the most impressive and dominant player in the league the past two seasons, and his stats prove it. Players in the CFL are generally smaller at position-position basis when compared to the NFL, so Cam Wake played DE for the Lions. Offensive coordinators in the league had to specifically direct their attention to stopping Wake from getting pressure on the QB alot of the time, and once it was well known that he was an outstanding player, he was constantly double teamed but still managed pretty well. Led the league in sacks this season by far, and was a few short of the CFL record for sacks in a season. If I recall correctly he had a few blocked field goals during his tenure with BC because of his surreal vertical jumping ability. He was the defensive player of the year the past two seasons, and many argued he should have been named the MOP(most oustanding player) this season, but a defensive player had never won the award before and I guess the canadian journalists who voted on this award were too afraid to break that trend. It was well known in the CFL this season that Wake's contract was ending and that it was almost a guarantee that he'd get some NFL attention. You guys got a good one in Wake. Hopefully his success in the CFL translates to NFL success for you dolphins fans. I'll be cheering for him. p.s. try catch a CFL game on tv somtimes if you can, even though it isn't as hyped as the NFL and doesn't have the financial resources to compete with the NFL, it is still a very exciting and entertaining game to watch
Thanks esks! I try to catch some CFL games, but the Wr's having the running start to the line of scrimmage looks really odd to me.
Yeah. I guess the unlimited backfield motion would take a while getting used to for americans viewers used to the NFL.
No, No, don't get me wrong: Great signing with no downside. Love it. I was just trying to honk a little caution if anyone was incubating wild expectations. In particular, I was thinking of this fellow who was heraded as a DPOY (I think) DE who was Jewish that everyone got all excited about. He came here and, IIRC, didn't make it to even the second round of preseason cuts. Can't remember his name. But hell, we just saw a 1-15 team go 11-5. Maybe wild expectations are in order.
Just read on a media release from TSN that this is the largest contract ever signed by a CFL player heading into the NFL.
I have no idea who you're talking about there. I don't recall anything on this DE. He was from the CFL too? Regardless, I get you. We shouldn't expect a Lawrence Taylor here no doubt. He should be considered a long shot to make a huge impact. THat said, it's exciting to see the staff making moves for a top player in another league regardless. There were over a dozen teams interested in him yet we landed him. That's a good sign. If he can contribute well on ST's and simply develop into just a pass rush specialist to come in on passing downs this will be a successful move.
That is the main reason to get a bit excited about this move. Otherwise. I'd say that we're getting a bit too excited about a CFL/NFL practice squad guy. Parcells & co. have a great history of finding great LBs/pass rushers, like Ware, LT?..=D.. I wish!! etc. He seems to have all the measurables that one would want in a LB. Let's hope he's one of those diamonds in the rough that got looked over and just needs his chance to show his stuff. One problem is that we won't know how he really is until after the draft, so it won't change our draft plan, because I feel we need to get a good pass rusher with the 1st or 2nd pick, but like others have said, you can't have enough good pass rushers, so it's still a good move. Let's hope. =)
lol That was, "Coooold Bloooded" Don't be so mean to the Bill's fans. It's not like they root for NE or NY.
I thought that was just the Arena League where they could be in motion toward the LOS. I realize in the CFL there can be multiple men in motion at the snap, but I don't recall they can be moving toward the LOS.
