Report: Peppers asks Panthers for release Julius Peppers has formally asked the Panthers to allow him to seek employment elsewhere. The Panthers have let it be known that they plan to franchise Peppers if they could not reach a long-term deal with him, but Peppers wants the opportunity to hit the open market. Carolina has nothing to gain by letting their franchise defensive end leave without compensation, so we can expect this one to get ugly. Jan. 16 - 11:34 pm et Source: ESPN.com Per Rotoworld, this could get really interesting. Anyone think he could make a Greg Elliss like transition to 3-4 OLB?
I think the athleticism is there but I don't know about anything else. He tends to take plays off and I know that he doesn't want to be a leader. Last year when he struggled, they asked him to be the vocal leader and he's exactly the opposite of that.
Peppers is a guy who needs a change in scenary, he is an incredible athlete, but things may have just grown stale in Carolina. He is one of those guys who needs to be happy to play well. I'd love to have him in Miami, some will say he doesn't have a position, I'd disagree, there is nothing the man cannot do on the football field.
Peppers is a great player but he is a 4-3 DE. Not a fit at all in our D. Look for Chicago to make a move considering they might cut O-Gun and all mate.
Carey: He's never signing a long term deal Apparently he wants to be in a 3-4 now. That would be sweet, but he would play Porter's position wouldn't he?
Peppers is a talent and at 28 he's still got some good tread on those tires. He weighs 283 #s. So he's stout enough to play SOLB, IMO. He's certainly athletic enough, as well. Question to all you defensive gurus: While we already know Porter needs to play WOLB to produce. Can a guy like Peppers line up over on the strong side and help us? He's agile and quick enough to win most battles against TEs, right?
I know that, but SOLB or WOLB. We all saw last year with Porter that playing out of position can be awful, but we also saw two years ago what an athletic DE can do as a backer with JT.
I'd love to hear from some experts that have seen a lot of his game. This is kind of a million dollar question bc we need to find whoever is going to be the other compliment to Porter's pass rush. Sadly, I live in NY and the only Carolina game I've seen this year is the one in which they were smoked by Arizona.
For those with club level access you can just click on the link and read the thread: http://forums.thephins.com/showthread.php?t=25358 The answer is quite simply Peppers can probably play strongside as hes probably athletic enough to cover and certainly strong enough to set the edge vs the run. Its been discussed if Roth could actually move inside where he played at various points in HS. Obviously the level of competition is different.... Personally, I LOVE the idea. To me Peppers represents the type of ridiculously talented athlete Parcells had in LT, John Abraham, and Demarcus Ware. He craves this type of game changing player from what I can gather. I cant see him not throwing our hat in to the mix.
Imagine Peppers on the strongside and then adding Karlos Dansby at MLB. Daaamn we would be scary. Now the next question is if Carolina franchises him (which seems to look probable), what would it take to move him?
He's just a beast slick, no way Carolina lets go of him. We run a Hybrid system, Peppers can play up or down, and he can pass rush and cover, his "off' year means double digit sacks. I mean come on, if Shaun Ellis can play in this system, Peppers surely can.
2 first round picks, plus his contract, "franchise" means 2 #1's. Tuna did it when they signed Curtis Martin away from the Patsies.
I dont know what it would take to acquire him in a franchised situation but Im going to bed now to dream about the bolded part!
Julius Peppers is close to being worth 2 #1's...really close.. If it were me, and I was in the TunaFather Family, I'd pull out the bottle of scotch, and ask myself: "Will this team win 10 games next year" If so, that would mean we traded a #25 and a #20 or so pick for a guy who will have 10+ sacks and make the defense...if the Front Office cannot see us winning 10 games, then pass on the deal. #1's in the 20's have a huge bust factor, but then again, you get to pick them, 2 1's would mean a cover corner and a safety, or finishing the Oline, or a Te and a Safety....I'd make sure it was good scotch though.
I do believe they changed the system, the patsies put the tag on Matt Cassel and he is no worth 2 #1's if he signs elsewhere. The only other guy I can recall snagging the 2#1's for being signed is when the Panthers gave it up for Sean Gilbert in the 90's.
Yah, a first and a third is correct. That's the highest return value I believe. Two firsts is crazyness in my opinion. It depends if our FO believes we are one player, a peppers away from being a great defense. This FO has won me over with the way they performed this offseason. No questioning from me until I see the results.
Nope, the franchise tag still carries the 2 #1's penalty. Teams are free to negotiate the compensation up front but if you don't and you sign a franchise player then it's 2 #1's automatically. Peppers will be 29 before the season starts and entering his 8th year. As good as he is, I'm not sure he is worth 2 #1's. Carolina are in a bit of a bind with him actually. If they franchise him, they are on the hook for over $16M next season and then Gross is free to leave. I believe they will try to get Gross signed up, tag Peppers but try to deal him for a #1 and a #3, a la the Chiefs last year with Jared Allen.
