Per Rotoworld he is a possible cap casualty this off-season due to his $3.5 million dollar salary cap number. I like Vonnie but with the emergence of Randy Starks and Phillip Merling it could be a smart move. Not to mention that I think Parcells and Company are very high on Chris Canty, Defensive End from the Cowboys. Rotoworld also mentions that John beck could be shopped for a 4th Rounder but if not they would keep him for a 3rd Rounder. * I also expect Ernest Wilford to get the axe
I mentioned Vonnie as a possible cap casualty after this season was over due to his age and how many younger ends we have on the roster. Vonnie can definitely still play at a high level and is the spokesman for the team, still, the head office may decide the cap hit is too much and decide to keep getting younger.
He may be willing to renogiate his contract . I like Vonnie a lot. Good player, and he went thru 1-15 with us
I like Vonnie and think his presence on our team is valuable. The 3.5 mil cap hit, IMHO, is not that high for a quality veteran D-lineman. I would prefer that he stay here for 2009 while he tutors some younger guys, but I can't question what our front office does.
Don't underestimate Vonnie's leadership qualities. I would try to do whatever it takes to keep him. I do agree that his salary would be too much, but if he's willing to renegotiate then I would love to keep him.
I can't agree more ... I had thought about cutting Vonnie to save some cap room, but truth be told he's a good veteran presence for our two defensive ends - Phillip Merling and Kendall Langford. It's hard to put a price on intangibles. I'd like to keep him, if possible.
With all the cap room we have, i don't see the point in cutting a good player. Wilford.............lol no way he stays. He made 7 million last year, was the 13th highest payed WR' in the NFL last year and only had 3 balls.GONE GONE GONE!!!
Renegotiate a smaller salary to stay and play 2nd on the depth chart i would be fine with. He's good, just not dominant, and if the FO addresses his position they will want to upgrade, question is, does vonnie want to stay at lower salary in a different role? I hope he does.
Vonnie is worth keeping. 3.5 is nothing for someone with all his intangibles. Wilford should have been cut in training camp last year.
I don't see him going anywhere. He may (as I think it was previously mentioned) be willing to renegotiate. If anyone here paid any attention to the off-camera gab that went on during every game between him and sparano, he's a very respected part of the team to the staff...but who really knows? Old school is one of my favorite players, and one of the nicest to be around, he's a family man, and a genuinely nice guy, so I definitely could see him trying to keep his feet planted right where he's at.
Its a delicate situation, but i have totally changed my tune about him, i dont want him starting but would love to keep him around. eventually maybe coach for us...gosh iam a homer.
Agree on both. Cutting Holliday for the purpose of clearing cap space seems unnecessary. I don't see the need to. The only way would be if we were trying to clear space so we could sign Brett Favre to get us to the Super Bowl next year.......... hopefully everyone is able to figure out that was a joke!!!!!
I like Vonnie he is a good role model for the young guys we have, and the ones we will more then likely bring in. I dont see a need to release him.
