Good point, but then we'd have to make sure that we got Carey signed. Which brings us to.... Good question, but this makes me rethink tagging Bell. If it goes by specific position (RT instead of OT) then I might want to tag Carey instead of running the risk that some desperate team would try to sign him to a large deal as their LT and see him leave. I wouldn't want to pay Carey that kind of money, so it might be better to tag him. But I would like to know the answer, is the tag Top 5 at a specific position or general?
I was going to say Sparano with the same logic - the idea of paying anybody on this current roster that's eligible top 5 money makes me a little queasy. Bell is the person I would least like to lose but no way would I want a franchise tag on him.
It's for the Position they play, not genaral...............http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franchise_tag
Thanks, that's particularly handy because of the prices. I think they should split FBs and HBs though. FBs have no chance of getting franchised as a RB. And I was even more right than I had imagined about safties getting paid less. Only kickers and punters get less money.
Is anyone on the roster worth top 5 money at their position and what that would mean to our salary cap? We just got the salary cap where we had room to work with and got rid of some high priced veterans. Sorry but I just don't think any player on our roster is worth top 5 money. Once you sign anyone to that huge contract it doesn't leave you in a very good bargaining position with the other players you might want to sign. If you tag anyone with that Franchise tag you better truly believe they are worth that top five money and the consequences it has to our salary cap. But thats JMO. Note: Last years two Franchised offensive linemen received contracts of $7.45 million per year. This year would be probably $8 million or more.
Ronnie brown and Jake Long our top five at their positions..Jake is the best going into next year imo.
the franchise tag can be used in situations where the player is not really worth the top5 money. matt cassel is an excellent example. no way cassell is worth top 5 money as a qb. but because of his importance to the team, combined with weak/average qb free agency market; the pats are willing to shell out the dough in order to ensure he remains with them. i dont see anyone on the phins in that situation. bell would be the closest, but the Fa safety market is realtively good this year. another thing to consider, if we lost bell, we would likely need 3 new safeties this offeseason, 2 being starters.
I think the Pats are tagging Cassel so they can have more time to work out a trade for him. Obviously he's too hot a commodity to let walk. If they tag him it is my understand there is no guaranteed money until the season starts so if they can work out a deal that involves no guaranteed money (because I don't think you can trade tagged players) then trade him for a first or second round pick to a QB desperate team. They know that Cassel is a product of the system. They'll probably draft a QB in the early-mid rounds due to concerns about Brady's knee. This way they don't have to pay Cassel, can get something in return and not lose much if anything at the backup QB spot.
They can trade him next year, assuming that Tom Brady is healthy. I believe they are high on Kevin O'Connell.
Because Brady had 5 more wins in that system, and there are many QBs in the league better than he [Cassel] is.
Because Brady is hurt, and you dont know when he comes back IF he comes back at all next yr. Cassel knows the system and played very well in it. If you let him walk he gets a big contract elsewhere and you are stuck hoping the next backup learns the ropes like Cassel did. Which hey, I am all for that route personally. I dont think the Phins will really have to franchise anyone. Bell has already said he wants to stay here, and he's 31 I beleive. He's not going to get a HUGE contract. Carey I am still up in the air about, I really wouldn't care either way with him. Personally I might tag him and see if I can get a solid tackle in FA and either trade him or release him. Not a huge fan of his. Crowder is decent but I dont think he is worth the money he will want and I think BP can get a barn burner in the draft.
He didn't phrase it that way. So who's to say what interpretation is correct? Carey is probably the only guy who has a chance to be franchised.
Long is a great run blocker. IMO, the reason we ran for a higher ypc behind RT is partially due to Carey, but also on some long runs that went that way, we were unbalanced to the right with Jake next to Carey. Also in the conventional alignment, we often ran plays that way, with Smiley pulling and leading through the B or C gap. We ran more power plays to the right during the course of the season, whether it was Smiley pulling and leading, or Alleman who I seen do it well a couple of times when I focused on him. Going back and rewatching we may see some plays with Jake or Satele pulling and leading to the right too.
It says your linebackers arent doing theyre jobs as well as they should be. Its a knock on the linebackers IMO
That's very true, and it would be even more true 20 or 30 years ago........ but you have to remember that our 4 DB's that start the game are the only 4 guy's to play all the plays on D and play around 20 to 30 more snaps more per game then anyone other then CC and even he go's out of the game when we go into a 4-3 look.So odds are very high that one of them would lead the team in tackles.
Carey. It's a one year deal. You draft other positions of need, and this gives you time to find another RT, either this year or next. RT are easier to to come by and often rookies can start. You keep him and draft other positions. Maybe a late round prospect blosoms with a year under his belt- we have 3 7th's. If there's an offer to trade for a second or better, you take it.
Doesn't matter. The question is, IF you had to Franchise someone on the team...Who would you Franchise? This really isn't that hard of a question, yet so many people don't seem to understand it. Hmmmmmmmm.
I can see Penne, but again, I dont see him being just a one yr and done with us guy. IMO he finishes his career as a phin.
Guys who are Free Agents this year? Nobody. If the entire Miami organization's players had their contracts expire, all 61 guys I would say the guy to franchise would be Jake Long.
Same exact thoughts, and if it couldnt be him id have either crowder or carey but bells the best choice in my mind.
