Okay here is an issue I quite did not understand, with 17 seconds left in the 4th, 1) the refs make sure the punt was really downed at the 2 yard line, 2) the illegal fwd pass, which should have resulted in a 10 second runoff (with 7 seconds left), because it appeared to be a diliberate attempt to fumble the ball out of bounds to kill the clock. With the above, do you guys feel that the refs were being overly generous to the Jets....? You guys know that Favre's intent was to stop the clock, which in essence gave the Jets another play, which who knows what would have happened if our defense did not have that great speed. Am I off base or just being too picky....? That being said, I am thrilled we won the AFC East and that we knocked out 2 AFC opponents with 1 punch, especially the Patriots. d-1
Yeah, I am, but I have an issue with how they took away our momentum to win the game. The future is, I don't want this to happen again. The Jets got a free play and you never know which way the ball would bounce.... d-1
I didn't know there was a caveat to the rule making it OK for the refs to ignore it. Hell yes I think they were being generous to the Jests/Favre. Every lateral I expected someone to slip and allow the runner to break free, seems like they ran around for an hour before it ended.
What I thought was interesting was that there was no ten second run off when there was 0:7 on the clock. I thought there was suppose to be?
Yeah, that kind of blew my mind a bit. I was also upset that no one double checked that 2 point conversion. Could have sworn that was a drop. I was doubly PO'd when CBS didn't even bother with a replay.
Yes, there should have been, but the ref explained that the illegal fwd pass was not done in an effort to stop the clock, something to that affect, i can't recall, but you are correct, it should have been run-off and I'd like to see an explaination of it. Also just heard the Chargers won their division with an 8-8 record....? And the Patriots won 3 more games.....? I know it based on division games, but this is silly..... d-1
I will tell you what I believe, that call was to give Brett and company one last try. For years now Brett team has been given favortism by refs and phantom penalties on other teams giving Brett that one last chance. This is also the trend with Tom Brady too. Yes 10 seconds should have been run off, and why in the world was the punt ever reviewed, it gave the Jets time to devise a play, thats all it did.
Yeah funny, and then why the double check on the punt to the 2 yard line, our players never even went out of bounds. It just appeared that they were bending over backwards for the Jets..... d-1
Yeah, I thought there would be too. Apparently if the refs deem they weren't deliberately trying to stop the clock, they don't run off 10 seconds.
I think the refs were so afraid to be wrong that they did nothing (and thus were wrong) thats how it works.
You might be right actually. Big game, at the end of the season, and they didn't want to blow a whistle to end it on their own accord. Maybe lol. But there is favoritism in this league. Can't argue that. League favors its stars...
The problem I have is that the ref said "the player was not attempting to stop the clock," which is a complete judgment call on the ref's part. It's not the referee's job to read a player's mind, and there should have been a 10 second runoff. But the game is over and we won, so we can forget all about that and celebrate for the night! We face a tough opponent next week.
I actually didn't mind the fact that they didn't run the 10 secs. Why? I was hoping that Favre would find himself receiving another lateral. This time I was imagining Porter knocking him.
I do not like the 10 second run off rule for much of anything. I understand the importance of a running 10 off for injury but to do what Favre did was placing the ball in jeopardy of a turnover. That is cause enough for a team not to partake in such an endeavor. The penalty was good enough for me.
There was another player there who missed the ball. Favre was trying to get it to him, he was NOT trying to kill the clock but rather keep the play alive and adavance it down field. Correct call.
With you 100% on this - I was watching the TV with the x-files theme going round my head and thinking the league was going to set up Favre for a 99 yard score! damn longest 17 seconds of my life!
Well, it didn't look to me like he was trying to get it out of bounds, just forward to whoever was up ahead of him. You also have to take into account the Ty Law holding call that negated the INT, and the no call of the slight push off on the Ginn TD. So, I can see calls like that going both ways.
