A complete straw man's argument. I said that the Red Sox can sign Teixeira but it does not financially behoove them to do so at the cost of 184m over 8 years. Nobody doubts anyone's wallet in this race. The Nationals, Red Sox, and Angels have deep coffers. It all depends on who wants and needs Teixeira that badly. That's all there is to it. All three are owned by billionaires.

This has to be a bluff on Boras' part. What teams besides Boston, LAA, Washington, Baltimore or NYY could it be who has the money and the open spot at 1st? I'm thinking maybe Seattle or SF. Any other teams who could possibly afford him like the Mets, Dodgers, Rangers or Tigers have players locked in at that position.

IMHO...I think Teixeira goes to LAA or BOS when it's all said and done...Boras is no doubt playing both sides against each other here...I also believe Scot is using "other offers",that I personally don't think exists(195m)...don't be surprised if Arte makes Tex...I mean Boras an offer he can't refuse...when Moreno wants something bad enough..he more times then not gets it...even if it means over paying someone, which he's done in the past...

The Rays are currently talking to free agent Pat Burrell, says SI.com's Jon Heyman.
It sounds like the Rays prefer Milton Bradley to fill their DH vacancy. Garret Anderson is another option, but the Rays would be better off with the right-handed bat.

I know everything I read is the Yankees arent involved - havent bid, etc, etc, etc....but if somehow it turns out that Cashman pulls this off, I will be floored.

Nothing I read says the Yanks are interested, but if........IF....oh baby.

The Sox might have said they wouldnt be a factor, but I actually believe the Angels when they say it. And it's unfortunate. They need Tex more than anyone. If they think signing Fuentes is an all right fall back to spend the available money they're fooling themselves. The offense is pretty poor now. I guess Pat Burrell and Adam Dunn should be happy. Please please please just go to the Nats so I can hate you Tex :wink2:

Kind of seems like Tex wants to go to Boston and Boras has been using the Angels (and others) to drive up the price. At least that's the feeling Moreno got, which is why he pulled the offer.

And finally, we have Manny news!

Impacto Deportivo reports yankees sign manny 3/75

Noticias :: Impacto Deportivo con Franklin Mirabal

Here's their history calling deals, from mlbtraderumors...

    Quote:
    * 11/24/08: Reported the Braves as the mystery team in on Rafael Furcal, offering four years and $52MM. The offer was inaccurate, but they did nail the mystery team.
    * 11/12/08: Correctly scooped the Damaso Marte signing.
    * 2/21/08: Incorrectly indicated the White Sox reached an agreement with Bartolo Colon. Also incorrect on a similar rumor involving the Royals.
    * 1/21/08: Correctly scooped the Octavio Dotel signing.
    * 11/18/07: Correctly scooped the Luis Castillo signing.

That's ok to be honest with you. I'd really like to have the farm kids play this year as long as we win the division. Expectations will be lower and we should work hard on re-signing Lackey.

Don't waste money on Fuentes. Just save it and have a very nice manageable payroll for the future.

The first Sox/Yankee game at Fenway and YS would be pretty special after that it will be more of the same. I'm actually starting to get tired of all the hype of these games now, that and the fact that they're 4 hours long.

Wow. Can't believe this. I really did not think they would go after him. Now they really have a crowded Outfield. Guess Matsui/Damon/ or Melky may be gone. Probably keep one for DH, but trade two.

Manny is probably the best pure hitter in the game and I dont' think any pitcher can fool him consistently (WHEN HE WANTS TO PLAY). Unfortunately not sure anyone has figured out how to keep him happy and motivated.

The article you link to was put out for sundays newspaper. The article I posted was written sunday night so the sequence is off.

Hal denies the report according to newsday but the paper is standing by their story..Hal's not exactly convincing meaning it could be a formality of getting a signature: Noticias :: Impacto Deportivo con Franklin Mirabal

Redding would be an ok #5 but i want Niese to win the job. Hes young, lefty (which is something we need), hes a different style lefty then Johan or Ollie Perez (if we resign him), more upside then people give him credit for and Redding wants a guaranteed two year deal. This for a guy who pitched 1 IP and gave up 7ER as a NYY in 1 start. He can compete with Niese for the job with the idea that he goes to the pen or minors if he cant cut the mustard or Niese outpitches him otherwise Id probably say pass.

Low risk/high reward signing for the nats.
The Doumit signing is a very underrated one. For a guy who can play a variety of positions and hit for a high average, with power thats pretty solid for Pitt.

Even after adding Sabathia, Burnett, Swisher and re-signing free agent left-hander Damaso Marte, Cashman said the Yankees remain on track to lower their payroll for 2009.

Well I think a Salary Cap has a place in baseball. I think it would improve the quality of the game for all the fans. I dont view a Salary Cap as a negative.

With our without a Salary Cap teams will still waste money and miss out on playoffs, same as we see now without a Cap. However, the Cap would perhaps help many franchises in other areas of competition.

At least they'll blast Boston to pieces now (you would think...). By the way nobody in here try to convince me that the Yankees have weaknesses now. They're defense in the infield just got a major boost. In the outfield they'll fix their situation.

They'll probably deal Damon off paying half of his salary and they'll stick Swisher who is solid in LF. They'll stick with Nady in RF and trade for Mike Cameron in CF. They're defense is just fine.

Teixeira won't put the Yankees over the top. What will, is Sabathia pitching well in October (hasn't happened yet) and Burnett staying healthy enough to pitch in October (who's betting on that?).

The Red Sox will be just fine.

At least my hatred for the Yankees can increase. I respect the Sox, so glad they lost out on Teixeira tbh.

    CC/Burnett/Teixeira = 413.5 million...still missing the playoffs = priceless

Cant wait for the Yankees to come to Anaheim. Teixeira leaves for 10 mill? Arte would have done this deal if Boras had countered the 8/160 offer.

 I will gladly reference this post in Oct.

Plus, and this isnt a cop-out....that 400M well 2/3 is on youth! Lefty #1 Arm under 30, and switch hitting 1B vacuum glove under 30.

I am stoked....I love how the Yankees played this one...hinted to not be in it, which kept the bidding down, then when everyone drops off, they step in with only $10M more with extra year to lower the season avg??

Come on, from a business standpoint you would be ripping them for missing out on this if those final numbers ended up in BOS, ANA, or WAS.

Bunch of garbage. They may even keep the Red Sox out of the post-season, especially if Tampa gets a big bat at DH like Giambi. With David Price entering the rotation one of these three teams may fall out of the playoff race.

100% agree on every aspect, its not the bat, but his glove (Defense helps Arms) and the huge improvement in Arms.

Also, if Pettitte returns for 1 year, and that keeps Joba in the Pen this is perfect.

I love the bat from switch hitting match ups to fill the need to protect Arod, and ease pressure off others like Matsui\Posada injury return, and Swisher in pinstripes, etc.

Anyone thinking the Sox wont be fine is nutz....they were fine without him (unlike Yanks)...

Again, when its FA time, spend the money to fill holes...if you are in it, spend it, otherwise dont claim you are in FA market. Sox didnt need him, Ana did, and tried, but still think this was the Team that really needed him for Defense reasons.

The years of the deal is the same as what the Angels and Sox offered. And it's reported on ESPN that it's 8/180 so 20 mill more, which is what Boras has wanted for awhile it seems. Boras had a number in mind, Angels and Sox were trying to talk him down and he stayed firm knowing you guys would come running.
