    • Moving Matt Roth from defensive end to outside linebacker. His numbers are solid (43 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles), but they don't tell the full story. Roth, who leaves the game in nickel packages, said teams are running in his direction only about two to four times a game. ''It's respect,'' he said, acknowledging he is ''better'' at his new position.

''Tight ends run from him,'' linebacker Akin Ayodele said. ``They give up trying to block him. He's dominating the strong side."

He's been good against the run ever since he was put in there where has this guy been all year long?

I think it's in coverage where his problem lies. And that might just be due to inexperience as a LOLB.

    nice btw.

For anyone catching their first game at the Stadium this weekend, please watch this....IT'S AWESOME.

I was mentioning this after the Seahawks game. He dominates the edge against the run on his side. Also, often times they drop him into coverage, while allowing Porter to rush the QB.

You can't really see how good he is (same with Ferguson) on TV, as you do while watching the game Live.

This is why Roth is going to be on the team next year, and probably still a starter. Sure, he's not much of a pass rusher? So what, yank him in nickel and dime formations and put Joey Porter's understudy out there.

I'd disagree with the coverage thing, I can't think of any instance where he was exploited. It seems logical a 280 pound, first year linebacker would be, but they're careful with the situations they put him in.

This is basically the reason why I doubt that we draft an OLB in the 1st rd this year. Roth is playing pretty well- he did whiff on Steven Jackson on a screen play recently though- the point being that his coverage skills either need work and will get better or are a permanent flaw. Nonetheless, he's holding his own on the strong side edge. Then on 3rd down we still have Charlie Anderson and Quentin Moses- from what I saw Anderson looked pretty darned good last game- the guy shows flashes and I think that will continue. Moses remains a mystery, but he does have pass rush skills and very good size/speed for the position. Why he can't put it all together at the pro level is beyond me. There must be a back story there somewhere.

NT/S/WR/C/CB- positions of need. I'm still all for Alex Mack and then fill in defensive needs in rds 2-4. Maybe an OT if Carey isn't re-signed- I wonder how much he'll be commanding/asking for. There have been good arguments made for picking up Kenny Britt and Hakeem Nicks, and I'm still a big fan of Percy Harvin.

yep ,,, No rook is going to come in and play the run better then Roth. He'll be are starting LOLB on 1st and second down for as long as he can play the run well and that looks like many, many years.

Some people here just don't dig Roth the that's sad cuzz they are missing out.

JP is the LT of are team and Roth is the Carl Banks. As good as JP is at getting after the QB that's how good Roth is at playing the run.The few that want us to take a OLB with are 1st pick don't seem to understand the role that the OLB's play on Bill's/Tony's team.

When Bill had LT he wasn't wasting 1st round picks looking for another one.So he's not going to start doing things crazy like that here.

BTW~ This is a great book by Carl Banks for all young football players or if you just want to get into very good shape.[ame]http://www.amazon.com/Carl-Banks-Football-Training-Program/dp/0452266203[/ame]

I don't agree at all. You can name Anderson and Moses as players we have, but they absolutely suck. Their sucking has been a problem. 13 games of nickel and dime package play has gotten them a combined 1 1/2 sacks, and between the two of them, play time taken away in favor of letting what is supposed to be one of our ILBs, Reggie Torbor, rush the passer in those situations.

I don't think there is a chance in hell that the team doesn't spend a 1st day pick on another pass rusher. If Charlie Anderson is lucky, he'll still be on the roster.

I don't even think they will wait tell the draft to pick up some more guys to play as the LDE on 3rd downs.I think they will want to get more of a proven commodity via~free agency. Then draft someone as well.

Charlie Anderson played pretty well last week, he didn't suck in my opinion. First day pick at OLB- good chance. 1st rd pick- I don't think so, but who knows.

Along with Y-Bell, he is definately one of the un-sung heros.

There is no doubt the impact he quietly makes, and the Carl Banks similarity is absolutely SPOT ON IMO.

I would be very very surprised if he isnt rewarded with a contract extention by the FO. He even fits the mold Tuna et el are looking for. Blue Collar, hard working, big body that keeps his nose clean and just flat out plays.

Well, the other thing is finding a replacement for Joey Porter. Drafting someone would allow them substitute such a player in, and work them into a role with limited coverage responsibilities.
