Never knew he was in prison for a year....crazy. Bess story: From being caught up to catching on -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com
Nice read to start the day!! Nice to see someone have a hiccup in life and learn from it and become better because of it. Wish more had this type of turnaround.
Seems like Bess was another one of those poor souls who didn't understand the grades of the NFL advisory committee and set themselves up for some major disappointment.
But as a player he was worth a late second or third round pick.To me this just shows how the 40 yard dash is just not used in the right way.
good to see him doing well despite all the distractions in his life. he should gt his 3 catches tomorrow and be behind Chrebet. Amazing considering he didnt see the field much as a WR early on in the year. Hes definitely been a bright spot for us this year.
I'd be stunned if Bess ever was a 2nd or 3rd round pick on anyone's board prior to the combine. A potential 2nd day pick, maybe. Then he ran an abysmal 40 and that basically killed his value as a return guy right there (see his returns in Miami as to why speed is important for a returner). So you were basically left with a small, slow WR coming from a college that traditionally doesn't produce particularly great NFL talent and you got a late round / UDFA guy.
Because when is the last time you saw a guy running a straight line with out his gear on in a game? They should make them run zig zags with there gear or something........ As long as a WR can get in and out of his breaks fast, can catch, run good Routes, get open in zones it doesn't matter if the WR is slow. Most WR's in the NFL all run about the same speed. So getting in and out of your breaks fast is the most important thing i think a WR can do to get open. That with making the CB think your going to do something your not. You can take a teams long ball away but a guy with a short burst of speed, that can read a zone, and that can catch will always be open.
Bess was not looked at high mainly due to the offense he came out of. But I def. like that he was overlooked and we got him.
I'd be stunned as well, but when i saw him play last year it was it was easy to see he was a special player.A true gamer. If he went to Texas and ran a 4.4 teams would of been falling all over their self for him, and to me that's kind of sad........cuzzz if you saw him play you knew the other team couldn't cover him.Last year in the bowl game they played his team was getting beat down, but him and Colt showed me they would someday be in the nfl. Colt is the real deal. It's just a matter of time tell he's starting in the nfl.
Great read and wonderful story! You really have to be impressed with his drive to succeed. You also have to be impressed the the way this team is being put together. It's a very exciting time to be a Dolphin fan again!!!
Wow, great story. Glad Davone was able to turn basically nothing, into something. Im thankful he's doing it for us too
Congrats to Bess for turning his life around, to the Bess family for their child & to Ireland/Parcells willing to give this man a shot. He has a child now so hopefully this turnaround is for good; which it seems like some of it was "wrong place, wrong time". awesome story
