We talk a lot about trading down to get more picks, which would be nice, but what if we were able to trade up and get two high first round picks? I wonder if it would be possible to get a second pick in the Top 10 by trading our first pick in the 2nd round along with maybe Jason Taylor and another later round pickk ?? Picking up Chris Long and Gholston or Dorsey would really be incredible.
IMO two first round picks almost allows you to move anywhere you want. The question is how do you get two first round picks? The Patsies seem to have figured it out ( I can't stand them chumps).
It would take way too much to move up for a high 1st rounder, heck it would take both of our 2nd rounders to move up to the #20-25 area. It isn't worth it to trade away what it would take.
Yeah, but the chance to obtain two bonified superstars like Long and Dorsey would help solidify our D-Line for years to come. Basically we'd just be giving up JT, who is nearing the end anyway, and maybe a mid round pick. Whether there's another team that would do that trade I don't know but the chance to move down 20-some spots and pick up JT along with another pick might appeal to someone. We'd of course be getting rid of JT's big salary also. I would love it on our end.
We'd be lucky to get a high 2nd rounder for JT, noone is going to just give up picks for a guy that might only play 3 more years. Draft picks are very valuable and teams aren't just going to give them away........unless they are named the Miami Dolphins (Feeley, Culpepper, Green, etc). If it was that easy to trade up for 1st rounders, every team would be doing it.
if the Matt Ryan story is not a smokescreen, we could trade up to the middle of the first round its not a totally crazy idea our 2 2nd rounders are worth the 20th pick in the draft
I don't think it is a matter of ease for a team with 2 2nd round picks, it is a matter of desire remember that ireland said he wants a minimal list on his boards. so is he gonna trade up for a guy he loves or stay pat for guys who might not be there its gonna be a fun off-season
When you have as many holes as we do, you really don't have the luxury of trading away picks. The draft value chart isn't gospel, some GM's use it, some don't and some use it as a guide. Right now our 2 2nd rounders might get us into the high 20's, but the value chart won't stop a GM from asking for more. Trading up isn't worth it IMO. Besides, trading period on draft day is almost impossible. There is so much that goes into it and so little time to actually get it done.
do you fill holes with 2 players you don't like or 1 player you really like? thanks for pointing out our many holes, I hadn't noticed the value chart isn't the gospel, by it is a good guideline
Whose to say that there aren't players in the 2nd round that Parcells and Ireland like? This is a pretty deep draft on the defensive side of the ball, you can get 1st round value in the 2nd. We need to get as many picks as possible IMO.
I do not see Miami moving up to a 2-20 pick. However, I could see them moving up to grab a player at 21 - 25. Not saying they will...just that it would not surprise me if it happened. The Pats always seem to land multiple picks in the 1st round. Then again, they got Randy Moss for a 4th round pick.... I would love to see Miami move up in the round to get a LT/RT or a CB. That is of course if they took Long or Dorsey with the overall. I am pulling for Long.
I agree with you on the picks, but if Ireland is to be taken for his word the odds of us trading up are higher. He would rather go 2 for 2 on day one over 1 for 3. it may not mean moving that many spots, perhaps we trade a 3rd/4th/'09 pick to move 3 or 4 spots. you and I are on the other extreme, we think that there isn't a player that we couldn't use and that we just need to take the BPA when our turn comes
Trading up isn't impossible, but it's very tough to do on draft day. I think we need all the picks we can get. There are alot of good CB's available in this draft bud, some good ones will be there in round 2.
I don't necessarily think that BP and Ireland meant they would be trading up when they said they were shortening their board, they will have players in each round that they will target. Who knows, I just don't see the logic in trading away draft picks when you're trying to rebuild a mess of a franchise. Yes and no Yes there are many holes on this team and we need as many players as we can get, but I'm not sure I go with BPA. What if BPA is a position we don't need?
everybody is too hyped about CB's we have many needs greater than CB, we need pass rushers, LB's and a TE in the worst way if we took 2 linebackers on Day 1 I wouldn't be dismayed at all
We need a shutdown CB to play opposite of Will Allen. Gholston, Goff, Crable...take care of DT/NT in FA
we have so many holes to fill, I can't see it happening I am only guessing at their strategy, but the logic of trading picks is to get 2 blue-chippers rather than 1 blue-chipper and a quality back-up. this is all just theory but look at it this way: say Ireland sees a huge drop off in talent after the first 25 players, pick 23 has been made and a guy on our short list is still there who we had rated as # 19 on our board. do you trade up to get him? I would and I would bet a guy preaching a shortened board would too
well we need elite players at every position, but CB is not a HUGE need our pass rush is non-existant, our run defense is leaky, our linebackers are plodding Will Allen looks like a pro-bowler compared to the front 7 no corner ever born could shut-down anybody when we have no pass rush at all
I think Parcell's draft philosophy is a little different from Mueller's and that other schmuck that used to work here. (Rick Speilman). He is more concerned with getting the guy he has targeted than just going for value and amassing players. Remember what he said about his draft board being much smaller. I think we could move around to get the players that he wants. We have enough picks to have some flexibility. I know one thing, we won't be hearing about anybodies 'families' on draft day, that is for sure...
I agree, needs are 1) NT (Dorsey) 2a and 2b) TE and LB (not necessarily in that order Davis would be great if he was still there) 3) OG or OT 4-7) late round QB prospect (Matt Flynn looked good tonight for LSU), another LB or DL, WR, CB or another OL. But this is all affected by who we can find in FA.
The talent level in this draft is quite similar throughout. IMO, you can get basically the same value at #32 as you may get around #20 or so. And really, #32 and whatever low 2nd-rounder we get from San Diego isn't going to get us any further than #20-25, which isn't worthy of the risk, IMO. As for trading down, we really need to move down 3-4 spots and pick up a third 2nd-rounder. With you 100% there. I think the need for a TE is overlooked and understated. Parcells loves having a great pass catching TE. If Fred Davis or Martin Rucker is there with the ladder 2nd-round choice, then I'd certainly go for it. EDIT: Forgot about the CB need, but I am hoping to land one of the big free agents.
You can..., get to 20-25 but you don't have to..., it's just the option that is available..., it's having the option that makes it interesting..., good players will fall as more Juniors enter the arena..., somebody that Ireland and BOP have at 10 could fall to 20..., that's all..
2nd rounders are a great value, when used right. As many players as we need, I would be suprised if we traded up, unless... we were also able to trade down and collect more picks.
Do you realize that there is such a developement called a salary cap? The 1st pick (if we end up keeping it) will cost us close to or over 40mil garuanteed, then you want another top ten pick? Last year at 9 we gave Ginn 13mil garuanteed I believe, so this year it would be closer to 15 I assume. Thats almost 60 million dollars garaunteed just in 1 round, of 1 draft in 1 year.. No thanks.. I like the idea somewhat if it didnt cost so much, but we just got out of salary cap hell, no need getting back into it again for 2 guys that havet proven anything at a professional level
Losing JT would free up a huge chunk of that money. And no, actually I don't want another Top 10 pick, I'd like two or three more. I prefer quality over quantity though and I'd rather have two Top 10 picks rather than say one pick in each of the first few rounds. No pick is guaranteed to be a winner but you're much more likely to find a future superstar picking high in the draft than later.
