As I understand it he is free to go wherever he wants after this year is over. NE doesn't have first dibs on him. Does he stay in NE? Does he go elsewhere, and if so, where does he go? SF? Vikings?
Only a moron would stay to be a backup (i know, i know, he's from $C but still). 49er's and Vikings will definitely been in the mix.
If he goes, my choice is Lions. Just wondering but how do the Patriots not get first dibs? They're his team and have the ability to tag him. I don't expect him to go unless he's dealt which I still dont expect.
Certainly not a good idea to do that with a franchise tag. Charley Casserly made a good point about it. If they tag him, they could be paying somewhere in the range of $14 mil for a franchise, $10 mil for a transition tag. They need to rebuild on D so their money would preferably go there plus there's Brady. Either Cassel goes on the open market or they trade him. Because his agent will want big bucks that the Patsies won't give.
They may tag him but he can still choose to go elsewhere. If the $ is high enough I suspect that's what he'll do. Especially if he is guaranteed a starting job with the other team.
I dunno, forfeiting a huge payday and a 1st round pick for a QB who may questionably be a product of the system and supporting cast? I know Houston paid by the nose for Schaub but I doubt teams would be willing to bet the farm on Cassel.
That's the shot they'd take. He may be a good QB despite the system though. I don't think that NE tags him.

I doubt they'd forfeit a 1st round pick. Maybe a middle round one but not a 1st especially if they pick high. NE could tag him as a gamble if they think there's someone willing.
Basically what NE would be doing if they tagged him was paying him the top 5 salaries for QBs in the league, right? If they tag him thinking someone is willing to take the risk of trading for him and no one does the jokes on NE, right?
lets keep things in perspective, the guy has excelled in what, 5 games? teams arent going to give up draft picks AND big money. this guy isnt what he is if hes on the niners or any other qb deprived mess of a team
Pretty much but again, Belichick and Pioli are shrewd guys. If they think someone will, they'll probably have a good reason to believe so. At worst, a transition tag will cost him $10 mil.
You're right if they tag him I don't think he moves. Or at least I'd hope no one would bite. If he chooses to walk and go somewhere else though I could see someone giving up a pick for him. Esp. Detroit since he's young and they have two first round picks.. which is high since NE drafted him in the seventh round.
If they tagged Cassell then that means Brady would be shown the door. That's not going to happen. Unless Brady's knee is so bad he can never play again Cassell will go elsewhere.
They can tag him, and hope Brady will be ready for next season. Nothing is written in stone. The Pats won't let Brady go anywhere, and could use Cassell for some very good trade value, as long as his production stays the way it's going.
He's the next Shaub except worse. He isn't really all that impressive throwing screens and 4 yard passes. The yards after catch by some very good receivers make his numbers look much better than they should be. Also when he does go deep its to the best WR in the game. No other team could surround him with the type of talent to have success he currently has. Some team WILL offer him money and he will leave to start, and sadly for him, probably fail.

If his contract is up at the end of the year how could New England tag him and force him to play for a team he has no contract with ? I see 14 teams that may be looking for a quality starter, there are as follow in order from most likely to least likely. 1.Detroit 2.Minnesota 3.Cinncinatti 4.Jacksonville 5.Seattle 6.Philadelphia 7.Washington 8.Carolina 9.Chicago 10.St.Louis 11.Tampa 12.New England 13.Miami 14.Houston
This list is a 8 teams too large. CIN, JAX, SEA, WAS, CAR, CHI, MIA, and HOU are not in the market for Cassel. Out of the remaining six, TB and PHI have their own in-house guys who are heirs apparent. That leaves four teams, one of which (DET) is about to get a total housecleaning and as such is an unknown when it comes to interest in Cassel. I would imagine DET would rather wait and see how the QB prospects in the draft pan out. St. Louis might immediately be interested in Cassel and using his mobility as a way of counteracting their poor OL. And Minnesota would just be the perfect destination for him, but the Spielman factor comes into play.
