All the more reason I am glad we didnt target him. The JESTS are third only to the Cowboys and Raiders as far as wasting money on FA. None of them are getting the value in return for what they have paid out. The fact that both Oakland and Dallas are in Serious need of a CB (Especially the Crackwagon) but still didnt go after Law makes me wonder how much he actually has left in the tank...
They can have him, i think he's pretty much done. I thought the jets were out of cap space with their ridiculous offseason shopping spree?
I like some of the Jets moves this off-season. As BGNC mentions, Calvin Pace, Kris Jenkins, Richardson and Favre have played well this year. One that I didn't like was the Damien Woody one. They payed him I think $5 million a year and he's not a RT IMO. He has incredibly slow feet. Outside of him, I can't think of a bad move. I did think they overspent on some of the players but you have to do what you have to do to win games. I still think they're a nine win team, which could end up winning the division. Regarding the addition of Ty Law, I think he's lost a step but it'll be interesting to see how he fits in. The Jets have struggled in the secondary this year or at least the DB's opposite of Rhodes and Revis. I don't know how much of that has to do with the fact that teams have trouble running against the Jets so they are forced to pass though. As I said Law has lost a step but is still a smart player and could help them. He could also be no help at all. It'll definitely be interesting.
Yeah, I think the JESTS way overpaid for Pace, Woody, Jenkins AND Favre. They will be in SERIOUS Cap-hell for quite some time and all this for a 9 win season? Hell, we have just as good a chance to win 9 games, and our only big FA aquisition was Justin Smiley, and he isnt even a drop in the bucket.. Oh yeah, another FA that was way-overpaid on that last "Ty Law". To me its the exact same mentality Jerra Jones and Al Davis have shown, I call it the Yankee syndrome. Throw HUGE money at above average players and try to win it now.
Here's the thing though. What if we don't have a salary cap in 2010-2011? Its a possibility. How do these moves look then?
Yeah the CBA could come to an end then. That's not now though. If it happens it'll look great but I've got a feeling they'll extend it.
If they spend all that money and still win 9 games? I think they look pretty foolish. Look at Woody and Farve alone, the combined Salaries are going to pretty much garuntee they can't re-sign some of the other younger players that will help them in the future, and that is what the Yankees have been doing for a decade (Also no Salary Cap), yet I dont see the Yankees benefiting from this practice, and I seriously dont think the Raiders, Cowboys OR Jests will either.
That's not now but this team will be playing together for a couple years if it was to be an uncapped season. They could very well extend the CBA but the its the same possibility as it not being extended. If the CBA isn't extended, then the moves look good. If it isn't, the moves still look pretty good but they would be setting themselves back a couple drafts IMO.
Nine games is nine games. It may not be the record they're looking for at the moment but it could get them into the playoffs and that's one of their goals (I'm assuming). If they win nine games and get into the playoffs, do they look foolish? The Dolphins could win nine games this year without overspending but what if the FO spent money on a big name player. Could it have helped us win more games? I think that's what was the thought process in free agency from the Jets. They're thinking a group of these guys could win us many games and get us to where we want.
Well yeah obviously, THAT is exactly why teams over-spend on FA's. I am just saying that it VERY RARELY pays off. The JESTS are in front in the Division, I think they could be there just as well with Penny and without Jenkins or Woody. That jeapordizes re-signing other players that are coming due, but will be lured away because UNTIL the Cap is abolished, they still have to abide by it. I can name 50 if not 100 cases where a player garnered BIG BUCK via FA only to go from a contender to a nothing team, and a large part is the team aquireing the high priced players are handcuffed by the price-tag he brings. The JESTS have done it with several players, not just one.
It does very rarely pay off, your right about that Kenny but who is it to say it won't this time? For all we know, this team could win the remainder of their games and end up 13-3. I honestly think that they wouldn't be where they are today without Jenkins. The guy that they had in their prior to Jenkins was Dewayne Robertson and he was a terrible player. We don't know what the future holds for this team. They could very well end up winning a Super Bowl (God forbid) but anything can happen. I think spending in FA is basically gambling. Your hoping that the money thrown at guys pays off and they help you win games. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The Patriots added Adalius Thomas, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth in the 2007 off-season and they ended up going to the Super Bowl. The Redskins have spent money and money multiple times and it hasn't worked out. We don't have hindsight. If we did, the Jets may have not made these moves. I also agree with you that it will jeopardize the re-signing of their own players. That's something they'll have to live with.
CBA will be extended. I don't see Roger Goodell letting the league go to an uncapped season and a possible strike season.
Part of my point, they are overextended well into the future my friend. IF they dont make it this year, I think they are really gonna have a tough time of it as the things they are doing right now are going to negatively affect their cap in the future, long after the window closes for them IMO.
I agree comp. they keep signing all these one and done guys. I hate to tell them they are not going to contend this yr.
Why do you say that? I think they are one of the teams that could get better and better as the games go by. It wouldn't surprise me to see them win this division.
They wont,,,,doesnt mean they wont make postseason. I predict they get beat first round. And no sorry, I dont bet anymore....
Ooo, got it. When I say they won't contend, I think they won't be a very good team but you use it differently and I understand it.
The Jets Payroll is 113 Mil this year. The Phins is 113.5 Mil. Jenkins and Pace have given us the 4th ranked Run D in the NFL. Faneca and Favre have given us excellent veteran leadership. Add it up...We are now all alone in 1st place. 7-3. You really think we will only win 9 games? Delusional. at Tennessee..Probably a loss, but we have 10 days to prep for the game. Denver.. We will win this at home at SF..Another win.. Buffalo..The Bills are imploding..win at Seattle..The Seahawks suck..could be a trap game though.. Miami..Big battle. I like the Jets and Favre in the cold weather of late December 11-5 is highly likely.
I have never liked Ty Law.Ever since the game in '99 when Marino threw two interceptions to start the game in a 14-0 hole, I"ve never liked him. However, it turned out to be a great game with Damon Huard leading the Fins back to win it 31-30 I believe. All I know is that it was a suburb game.
There a long way from tieing that record my friend. I am all for the jets losing games and miami winning games. I want first place in the afc east, that loss gets us one step closer to it.
The Jets are prob. going to win our division, but man it is a tight one this yr. This reminds me of how it use to be when an 9-6 team could possibly not make the playoffs.
