Be honest. You posted this to illicit a reaction and nothing more. A blind man can see the potential of both of these guys and how, going forward, they factor into Miami's defensive plans.
I realize that this may not have been directed at me but I can only speak for myself and will do so at great length from time to time. In the first thread he stated that he wanted to see more out of them (Merling/Langford). Then someone posted their stats. They're not bad stats for rookies at all. Personally, I'd like to see more of them as well. I'd love for most of our draft picks to be PB caliber. Long, Henne, Langford, Merling, Cobbs. Sure, why not? I'd also like to mention that I did say that Langford was starting in response to someone saying he wasn't. The only reason why I mentioned that is because I knew it to be a fact that he was starting and was just trying to aide the person on the right path. I'd also like to say that his backup in Randy Starks isn't all that bad . I find my posts to be fairly kind and gentle and I certainly don't think I know all there is to know about football. With that being said if I've got a different opinion I'm going to speak it and if I can clear up something that I know to be true and give a proven source I'm going to do that as well. It's got nothing to do with scorning it's just adding to the content of the message board. Others Mileage May Vary.
It wasn't directed at you. There were really just a very few remarks that weren't necessary - I think some may have been removed.
falls on the secondary The reason Merling and Langford dont have all those sacks is because of our secondary. We have to put all of our corners, safeties, and most of our linebackers in coverage cause we cant stop the pass. The only blitzing linebacker we have is Porter. Langford is on the whole other side. If we can learn to stop the pass then Crowder, Ayodele, Torbor, and Roth can start blitzing as well so it will create more 1 on 1 matchups for the defensive line, but until then they wont get much. It falls on the secondary and the defensive cordinator to make better matchups all over the field. Langford does his job game in and game out. He may not have the stats, but if you look he is always taking out the most important block so others can stop them short and getting in the air so Quarterbacks have to redirect there pass sometimes. Merling doesnt even start. Holliday does so that falls on his performance in practice and training camp. Dont get me wrong there is no excuse for getting beat out of a job by a man 10 years older but you cant expect stats if he dont start.
Datjust Merling may not start but he gets around 25, 30 plays a game. Like others are trying to point out to some here 3-4 DE's are like DT in a 4-3.Sure sacks are nice but there main job is to occupy the other teams Oline so are LB can run around free and make plays.
After the Arizona game, I thought he may be right...at any rate, it's way too early to labeling any of our picks busts (except for those not on the team now), but the thing is, they were 2nd and 3rd round picks...not expected to be starters, just contributors and that they have...I just don't see the issue here with those two guys, given our other issues...
Both are starter material and that is a statement in itself. Merling playing behind Holliday isn't an indicator of his status or abilities just that Holliday has been a productive player in the 3-4 and Merling is a rookie. Rather than thinking of them as possible busts I would see them as a real good pickup for a rebuilding team and part of the foundation being put together for the future. Bashing a poster and insulting remarks because of a posters opinion is a reminder of why I left the other site to come here. Hope it doesn't follow me here. If you don't like someones thread you simply don't have to post on it and can move on to another thread and that can be your statement.
Both busts. Henne too since he hasn't got us to 6-0. When I saw this thread title I thought I was somewhere else. It's hard to determine a players value until he's either cut/traded for whatever reasons (bust) or he is re-signed for a longer term, proving to the team that he is the real deal. These two are showing signs of being the latter. Bust.
How many times have we seen these threads though? When I posted on FH, you would at least see 5 of them a day. It really gets annoying
I do aggree. We really need to let people have their say and in this case, if you look up his history you will see that while he does seem to have a gloom and doom outlook at times, he posts with respect for the most part. If he sticks around we'll get to know him just like most of us know one another and know what to expect, how to react, and who to skip over. I'm still not quite sure about why one would make a post about those two being busts. However respectfull it was written, it still is a head scratcher. Both are showing pretty good promise if you asked me. The biggest problem on the line is at DT IMO. Fergi is a monster but one thats on his last legs. Once he is out of the game, teams start running right up the gut, and that makes the rest of the defensive line play on their heels and especially so if the secondary is having troubles. The Rookies can only do so much in situations like that. They really need that veteran anchor to lead them. So no, they're not busts (far from it i think) but further additions to the line must be made next year to insure balance, and depth. First things first though. This defense needs a bonefied Cb so Will Allen is not counted on to be the number one Corner. Add in a stud Lb and ..........should I go on?
I have two words for you, Mario Williams. Is he a bust? I think most would say he is one of the top DE in the game. Guess how many sacks he had after in September 2006. Answer 0. He got his first sack against the dolphins and ended the year with 4.5. I am sure a bunch of posters called him a bust as well. Moral of the story ... you have to give them some time. The fact that they are seeing the playing field is a really good sign.
Brother Jeff is frustrated with the loss. I talk to Jeff on the phone every Dolphin Sunday. Bro like I told you on the phone, you can't put the fault at these two young players. The coaching on both sides of the ball just stunk, and it wasn't our game to win. The Ravens came to play and were the better team. Be patient grasshopper you will see these two shine more through out the year, and especially more next year. Jeff remember when you said our draft sucked, and I said hold on we got some good players here. Keep the faith bro, everything can't be fixed in one year. We need to learn, and grow as a team.
