Thats because he had no one in front of him and there was like under a min left different situations.. There is no Guarantees in football Pennington could have fumbled the snap or Brown fumbles. The fact is if Brown doesn't go in and we get nothing out of it then everyone will be talking about how that was a bone head move your defense was playing great all game blah blah blah.

The sheer inability to cover Walter and Johnson on the two plays that got them close was what bewildered me. By the way why is it that nobody even came close to questioning the very close arm was going forward call?

thats one play offset by the brilliant calls on our first two tds. you cant pick one play you disagree with and trash the entire effort. the coaching was solid and so was the effort. the texans have as much talent as us they just had some bad luck so far. they were due

    Except they had two timeouts:

    1-10-HOU 12 (1:57) 23-R.Brown left end to HOU 6 for 6 yards (56-M.Greenwood).
Timeout #1 by HOU at 01:51.

The players did put the team in a position to win this game, but when you have a coach that do not trust the OL and the running game, we got a problem. For 2 consecutive time we were in 4th and inches and sparano elected to punt.....we lost the game right there.
Also why we did change our style of playing? we were doing well last week against the Chargers, we were throwing on first down and dictate the tempo, today was a total disaster.....and this loss is on the coaching staff.

Yes, it was very Wannyish coaching today. Ronnie is going to get 1+ yard every time. Give him the damn ball.

I was livid at those 4th and 1 inch punts today.

no its not. no one will remember this game in 5 years...or well, no one will talk about this game in 5 years. the look o n our defenders faces, i think they'll remember this one. they didnt look sad-sacked or weepy, they looked pissed. and everyone here is just pissed, because we got our hopes up, and it rained on our parade. its disturbing to have a win locked up like we did, just to have it taken from us last minute. but lets not forget what and where we are as a team. we still have a long way to go. everyone knows we have a long way to go. no one on here should forget the cautious part of our optimism. this game was a 50-50 win for us. next week is no different, though my gut tells me 60-40 for us. theres still a lot of season left. lets remember all of our originals goals and hopes.

Nope, we lost when Schaub scored, period.

By the way, I am one of those who think Ronnie should have scored on the six-yard run that put us up by five. But for old Fins fans, this was a lot like the Oakland playoff game in 1974. We were behind 21-19 and driving. Griese was trying to milk the clock and kick a FG to win at the end. But Benny Malone scored on a 22(?) yd run with a couple of minutes left, making it 26-21. Then Stabler drove the Raiders and hit the winning TD to Clarence Davis with something like 13 seconds left.

Bell has to make that play on 4th down. There's absolutely no excuse for Johnson making that catch. KNOCK the ball down. He tried to make the INT and it got us burned.

Inexcusable. Sure, we had an ample amount of chances to win this game, but that play really sticks out.

    Makes me sick.

I still believe that 10-6 is possible.

Just that this game was a MUST HAVE for that to happen so we are really going to have to steal one from a team that we may look at and think we'd lose....

Maybe at Denver or something along those lines....

    Its not just that...

Its that if your going for the INT dont let the other guys 'Super Human' effort get it...if he's all over you man go SUPER CRAZY and take care of business.

All I see there is that Bell didnt want it as bad as the other guy because if its all about effort then the WR made MORE effort than Bell to get that ball and thats garbage.

I guess Sparano didn't want Cobbs to get more than 2 TD's today....Tony did not want to show up Kubiak and his defense, so in the 2nd half he decide it was time to play conservatively so the Texans could win their first game of the year, and continue their perfect record against Miami. Don't keep going with things that work Sparano.

Goodman had an interception and there were various solid pass breakups.

The unit was torched overall, but guys did make plays at times. They just didn't make enough of them to win.

going for the pick is one of the most moronic play in that situation...all you have to do is knock it down and you get it way back at the line of scrimmage..i really wonder what bell was thinking

    just knock it down!!!!!!!!

please. Yes they made great calls early on, but if you offset those great calls by making poor decisions later on in the game those great calls mean crap. Instead of going for the kill and being aggressive, the coaching staff decided that instead of trying to win the game, they wanted Houston to lose it. And i'll give houston credit, they won the game.

and before anyone says i am just playing the result, i was yelling at the TV everytime the punt team came on the field on 4th and 1.

You can't go for it on 4th and 1 just because it's 4th and 1. In general it's a rule that you NEVER go for it in your own territory unless you have to. Even once you cross the 50it's risky.

The only play call I question was the last TD run. I knew it was coming, the stadium knew it was coming, you knew it was coming, the Miami Dolphins defense didn't know it was coming. Someone has to be responsible for the middle of the field on a play like that. The second our defense lined up spread like that I just lowered my head and muttered 'touchdown.....'

teams convert 4th and shorts the VAST majority of the time. the only reason to not try is if A. you have no confidence in an o-line and RBs who have been great to get less than a yard or B. are trying to avoid critisism at the end of the game if you fail.

Like herm edwards says, you play to win the game.

I'll say it again to all you complainers. The only thing that kept us in the game from the first minute to the last was the coaching. Without our coaching we're 0-5 at this point instead of 2 and 3. We have major talent holes on offense and defense and its a credit to our coaching staff that we are able to cover them up and play as effectively as we do. The Texans have more physical talent than us and beat us on a last second TD all predicated on an insane catch by a pro bowl receiver midway through that last drive. You're all nuts if you're blaming the coaching staff for not being perfect.

If you play to win the game why not pin the other team back inside their 20 yard line? That puts you in position to win the game.

Teams do convert it most of the time you're right, but the times they don't it always seems to be the play that decided the game. I have no problem with the call there, nothing we did on offense lost the game.

Coaches have made numerous mistakes throughout the year, but so does every coaching staff. I'm more mad at the 3rd and short calls than the 4th down ones.

Is Jason Allen much worse than or current safeties other than bell? Let bell do the covering and allen do the playmaking (I admit, I know jack squat about who's supposed to do what)

no punting gives you the chance to not lose the game. if you don't think you can get not get (not even a yard, not even inches) a single solitary INCH, then you are playing mentally scared football.

Out of all the things that werent good today..I got one question.
With 3 seconds to go, and 60 yads to the enzone...Why not put Ginn, Hagan Wilfrod and Martin on the field..and have Beck or Henne chug it deep?

let me clarify. I don't BLAME the coaches for this loss solely. I am just saying they did not help matters, instead of trying to finish houston off they played very conservatively, which went against the aggressive play calling that has been winning us the game in the first place.

Going for it gives you a GREATER chance to lose the game by not converting. The chances of a team driving 80 yards down the field on you are extremely slim, thats why football is a game of field position.

The blame for this loss rests on the defense, but we knew already that our defensive secondary sucked big time. We didn't do a damn thing to improve it in the offseason, which was a huge mistake that I hope we correct this coming offseason.
I think this game made it pretty clear that we are not ready for prime time and won't be reaching .500 this season, but I do agree that the coaches made several blunders, any one of which if corrected could have brought us a win today.
But the fact is, this is the type of game we've been having for years and it's a sad indication that not enough has changed with this team. We still lose the close games, just like we did under Saban and Cameron.

You are misinterpreting what i am saying.

By going for it you are trying to win and finish off the other team yourself.
By punting you are trying to just let the other team not beat you.

I didn't get to watch the game, as I only was able to see it on my phone on my way back from St. Pete. However, it seems like there were some plays to be made out there that we just didn't make.

But, when you put up 28 pts and your defense causes 4 TOs, both sides of the ball are doing some good things. Sometimes guys just make very good plays. Watching the highlights and seeing that 4th down catch by Johnson, was just a great example of a guy making a great play, even when the defense did a fine job covering, going up to get the ball, etc. He just made a play.

I hope the game is on NFL replay. From reading some of these replies, I wish we had more confidence in 4th and inches also.

because when they fail(which isn't very often though) they get lambasted by the media and fans. When they punt, media doesn't ride them as hard and neither do the fans.

Colts and patriots go for it all the time. And the Superbowl, where Billicheat went conservative, they lost.
