Things have been surprisingly quiet on the contract front for ILB Channing Crowder. The fourth-year veteran is in the final season of his rookie deal, prompting some to wonder why the Dolphins are taking such a passive approach to locking him up long term.

I think they are waiting to see if Channing finally lives up to his potential. If he doesn't I don't see him coming back.

That play he made in preseason was absolutely incredible where he rushed the passer and reached for the strip..

Id wait to see how her performs this year until I start talks him. Id tell him at least that were interested in extending his deal, as long as he performs. Then see how it goes from there..

I think crowder knows that production is what gains contracts.

I also think that the FO might be looking to the draft for a ILB if talks don't ensue with crowder. They have a while to go before it's important, though.

A contract can be extended at any time, right? It's not like a trade where there's a deadline?

He deserves that because "You like him".

Sorry, but to date he as SERIOUSLY under-achieved. He has shown a bit of greatness this year, but I am just disappointed it has taken him 3 seasons and now a contract year to finally look "Alright".

He has been very disappointing this year IMO. In the off-season, he was making all the calls, making plays and looked great out there. He studied film and worked out, 2 1/2 hours after practice. We heard so much positives about him. In the pre-season, he looked pretty good and then this season hasn't done squat. In the Arizona game, he looked really bad imo. He was just running downhill and focusing in one player (i.e. on the 3rd and 7 when AZ was backed up on their goalline, Hightower took a handoff and Crowder went right by him, focusing in on Warner). I don't know if he's developed his game since he's come into the league. He still looks like the same rookie to me and if he doesn't shape up, he'll be replaced.

He complained about the money he was making, saying he was underpaid. Well, they basically said to him to show them he deserves a pay raise and so far he hasn't showed that he deserves it. I originally said to see how he does through midseason and then maybe give hima deal. Now, I'd wait to see how he plays out the whole season and then evaluate him and consider giving him a new deal.

    Well away from here
Guys like Clint Sintim, Luis Vasquez may be able to make he transition to ILB - who knows, he'd be either a 7th or UDFA anyway. I have to wonder what a guy like Julius Williams (UConn)would be able to do at a 3-4 OLB also. I know that isn't what this thread is about but I thought I'd better raise his name. Cody Brown gets a great deal of the pub and I don't know why. I've watched Cody Brown to see if he fits into the OLB mold for a 3-4 team and so far he underwhelmed me. He has decent hands and feet, although he struggles to disengage sometimes. When he breaks free he doesn't have an elite closing burst, nor is he a consistent hustler out there. You can run at him as he doesn't anchor down well, he will try to slip the block rather than being fundamental and stack and shed.

Williams ont he other regularly mans the strong side and he anchors much better than Brown. He isn't exceptionally fleet of foot either, but he is more physical in his hand use and variety of passrushing moves. He actually lead the team with 8.5 sacks last year. He is much more of a stack and shed type of a player. he dips his hips and plays with good leverage. He gets off of blocks better than you think and is always around the ball, and he hustles too.

If you watch tape of UConn check out #45 and compare him to #50, tell me who jumpa off the screen more.

A few guys I am interested in are Everette Brown, Larry English, Josh Mauga and Antonio Appleby. Brown is an FSU Defensive End that could have OLB potential. He's 6'2, 252 and runs a 4.6 I believe. Hasn't spent much time in coverage so that's a big question. He's a second rounder at the moment. I didn't get a chance to see much of him in the FSU/CU game. I saw Kenny Ingram a little bit though, 6'6 OLB who rushes the passer well. Too skinny though, probably because he was a Safety before. He's 228, very athletic.

As for Virginia's Appleby, he's played all the LB spots as well as Defensive End. I believe we talked about Appleby in the Michael Crabtree thread in the Club. Appleby has good lateral speed, good quickness and is a solid tackler. Has size, 6'3, 250 but I wonder about his forty. I've seen him in the 4.7 range, maybe to slow?

Larry English, the OLB/DE from NIU is an interesting prospect. 6'3, 255 and runs a 4.7. I've seen little video of him but from the video, I thought he used his hands pretty well, he's quick and likes to try to overpower Tackles with the bulrush. I've read that he's in the Terrell Suggs mold. Your thoughts on him?

I don't know anything about Josh Mauga but I saw him on a draft site. Have you seen any of him?

Everette Brown makes you want him to be Kamerion Wimbley, but I don't know about him yet.

    Appleby is meh.

Larry English makes me wuestion what he'll do against the big boys when his "man amongst boys" routine doesn't work. Can he disengage from the big OT's, is he fast enough off the edge with a good enough base to handle the run game? I think we really need to see him in the Shrine Game or something of that nature.

CK turned me on to Pannel Egboh - Stanford - they play ND this weekend.

Brian Orakpo but he isn't very dynamic or explosive to be honest.

I'd like to make George Selvie a OLB but CK I think would tar and feather me if I did.

I'm gonna take a look at two guys from Illinois - Will Davis and Derrick Walker.

To be honest it seems as though there are more LOLB's in this draft than ROLB's unless some Juniors jump in.

Crowder has played well and will likely be re-signed. Has he played pro bowl football? No.

But he has played well enough in his first 2+ years to warrant an extension. This is article is just making something out of nothing.

You could have replaced "Crowder" with "Carey" and it would have been the same thing.

There's no reason for a new regime to rush into resigning players from older guards. If Carey and Crowder continue to perform, I'm sure both will be re-signed.

Bro I totally disagree with this post. Channing has played better this year. The last couple of years I can't tell you how many tackles he made after the opposing team was even with him or past him. He is going to want big dollars, and I can't see it. He is supposed to be a stud, then why is Langford, and Merling looking awesome already? I say go into the draft next year.

    No offense Amanda.:wink2:

I agree with what most have already stated.

Crowder provides nothing that we couldn't get much much cheaper next year (assuming he gets approximately 4 yr 16 mil)

If the season ended today I believe they'd let him walk, but it doesn't and they have 13 more games to make the best decision.

I've said this before, Crowder is always a step behind it seems. He seldom blows up any plays. I too think we could get what little production he gives from a rookie.

Wow are you going to be surprised when the offseason hits. Carey and Roth will be the priorities. The fact you put Carey and Crowder in the same category makes me truly wonder if you can even tell a good player from a mediocre one (really...2 assists from your ILB??). The only way Carey doesn't get resigned is if the price range gets way out of there (after all money is wrapped up in Smiley/Long with Satele payday coming up after next year) but they will at least franchise tag him and get a draft pick for him.

Seriously, this guy is playing excellent football and is part of an excellent defensive unit, but some of you act like he's some sort of liability.

Sure, it would be nice to get a few more turnovers, but nobody else generating any either, so what's the problem?

Will Allen almost never causes turnovers, and I don't see anyone calling for his head?

He's poor in pass coverage. He gets washed out in plays a LOT and rarely makes any noteworthy plays or flies to the ball. Akin is clearly outplaying him and that's a guy whose labeled as leaving a lot of plays on the field with his past.

As far as Will Allen goes a lot of people have been concerned over the years about his lack of hands, but he blankets his guy well and doesn't get beat a lot most of the time (Arizona excluded). This team needs a playmaker in the backfield to come up with turnovers also, but Will Allen is at least at worse a solid #2 for another few years (if his gambling issue gets resolved ;p ).

Right now my draft picks/FA's would focus at finding a true #1 WR, a true #1 CB, ILB and a FS would be my main 4 areas for this offseason.

Crowder leads the team in solo tackles with 19, has forced a fumble, and was a key part of today's fourth and goal line stand at the one-yard line.

He actually had his least productive game of the season today, but even still, managed to get pressure on Rivers in spots, including a nice pass tip on a third down in the first half.

Is he a Pro Bowler at this point? No. Is he worth resigning and a legit NFL starter? Definitely.

If he keeps up his play level Im sure we will open negotiation. It could also be that his agent realized or heard he wasnt going to get an offer hed like and wants Crowder to put together a bit better resume before going after bigger $$.
