Talk Malik and new coaches with Packers Insider https://www.youtube.com/live/-LuG-6kR-NE?si=d_PQLeyxQkujhdfr
I certainly hope not. He was awful in college, awful with the Titans, and not goo as a passer in 2024 with Green Bay. Had we actually been able to hire LaFleur as coach, then I'd have been cautious that perhaps he would be able to continue to squeeze something out of Willis as a short term fix, but given that we have Haffley and none of the Packers offensive coaches instead, I think its highly likely that anyone who signs him is getting fools gold and bust with a wasted contract.
The woke media is making it sound like it's already a done deal, and if he's brought in that's fine. I just hope we have a legitimate QB competition. One thing that worries me is that I read our offense will remain similar to last year with RPOs, speed, and misdirection. Both our current QBs were drafted to run that offense. If we move away from that though, would Ewers even have a chance to develop? And if we stuck with a similar offense, does that limit us on other QBs that could fit? Several teams have had success with young QB's recently, so I'm hoping we hit on the right kid and have similar luck.
It depends on how they handle Tua, Tyreek and Chubb with regard to the 2026 cap. If all were released before 6/1 I don’t think they can afford him. If they keep Tua, which costs less against the cap than releasing him, they can pretty easily afford Willis assuming he is willing to work with the team on structure. Specifically 2026 cap hit.
I'm hoping two things: A) That the team does the right thing, and builds the team up slowly and securely from the foundation, focusing on the OL and run game first, before they even try to bring in any potential long term option at QB, and B) Whatever our offense is in the future going forward, its far less obsessed with big plays and YAC, and more taking what the defense is giving, running between the tackles, and hitting the open man for the first down. I don't think that Willis is the answer, and I don't want to try and take any short cuts regardless.
I'm not confident that Ewers can be more than a backup, but I like him a lot more than Willis, straight up. Plus we don't need to waste cap space on the risk that Willis brings. And if Ewers is a total bust, then we'll have a higher draft pick to get someone new too. Win/Win.
I agree. Ewers is the correct choice unless the new staff sees something that says he's just not far enough along. Then again, there could be a late-round QB that they're in love with for the draft...that works too. I do agree that a splash signing in free agency is the wrong direction though. We don't have the cap and it would have to be a very unique situation for me to be for that type of move.
Between the state of the salary cap and the fact that we look to be facing an absolutely brutal schedule next season, doing anything to try and be competitive short term is just idiotic. There's just no point. Roll with the young, cheap players, take the lumps, and move on. I'm looking at 2028 as the earliest we might try for a winning record.
I agree. Shore up the O and D Lines and the CB position this next year. Then fill in the gaps the following year.
There are a lot of gaps. The only players on offense I think are very likely to be on the team in 2027 are Achane and Paul. And we basically have to build everything on defense other than the IDL, Chop and maybe Brooks.
