Well we didn't even make it to Monday. The Falcons fire head coach Raheem Morris and GM Terry Fontenot. The Falcons 4 game winning streak to end the season wasn't enough for Arthur Blank to keep either one. Morris in his second season with the Falcons was 16-18 and Fontenot's five year tenure was 37-48 with no playoff appearances.
If baltimore loses to the Steelers and fire Harbaugh… im expecting ross to fire mcdaniels and finally grab a harbaugh.. Just a prediction, i am not hoping for it to happen.
Dirty McDaniel will be back next season. He'll officially be put into the pressure cooker, and we could see him canned early on in the season if we aren't winning games. In fact, anything short of a playoff win will probably ensure that next season will be McDaniels last. I'm personally rooting for him though. I like McDaniel, I think he's shown a lot of growth as a coach this year and deserves another chance. I'd be surprised if Ross fires him tomorrow.
Truthfully, if Baltimore was stupid enough to fire John Harbaugh, I'm all in on grabbing him. The Ravens have had a top 10 defense over the last 10 years, with the exceptions of 2017 (12th) and 2022 (25th). With a defense that dominant, your offense gets more opportunities. At least with Harbaugh, we'd have an IDENTITY.
If McDaniel is back next season, and he isn't the new GM's choice to be head coach ie; "yes we want you as our new GM but you have to work with McDaniel", then the team is fooked! McDaniel's hands were tied. He was hired but told he HAD to work with Tua so he did what he could and he did HAVE success but like any rollercoaster, the ride always comes to an end. If our new GM is hired under the same pretense, then we're right back on the same carousel...a weak GM that succumbed to ownership's hands on meddling desires, rather than letting the GM decide what's best for the team. Now if the new GM says "yea, I want McDaniel as head coach" then fine.
I don’t think we’re going to learn anything about McDaniel’s future with the Dolphins until the new general manager is hired.
Harbaugh would be in high demand and I doubt the Dolphins would be someone like thats first choice. Its probably why McDaniel stays another year. Might be better off finding one next year when they have more of a clear direction for the rebuild.
Morris cost his team the playoffs last year with his mismanagement. Similar to McDaniel's first couple of seasons in some respects.
I'd be fine with John Harbaugh. The Ravens have had some really poor luck over the years, most notably drops that kept them from winning playoff games. Not just the Mark Andrew drop either. I can think of games lost because of Flowers, Hollywood Brown, Bateman... Also Harbaugh also loses talented coaches yearly which impacts their preparedness. Yet they also seem capable of winning any game every year. Last night's game was the typical Goodell's NFL nonsense. It's the Hulk Hogan, get off the ground, WWE experience. Jackson had 57 yards passing late into the 3rd quarter. Then all of a sudden a defense which is dominant at home is just letting receivers run past them. Same script different night. Fire Harbaugh for that? Again, I'll take him
In regards to your last paragraph, I wonder if it'll be any other way? I don't know where Ross stands on any of this, but he strikes me as an owner who thinks they know more about the game than he actually does. It's why I am not expecting us to hire a big named GM with any type of ambition. For all we know his daughters are already calling the shots. Ross could just be the rich guy who buys a football team just to say he owns one. I don't know. What I do know is that all that goes away the minute you find that upper echelon quarterback. If we're not going to ever have a true identity (something this team sorely lacks), then like Cincinnati...You have to hope a Joe Burrow lands in your lap. I know I keep pushing that, but I feel like this organization has no real structure or direction.
Stefanski’s firing isn’t surprising to me but Pete Carroll’s? Wow, talk about impatient! But then again, what do you expect from the Raiders? Back to the Browns and Stefanski, I’m amazed that they’re keeping Andrew Berry on as GM, seeing how he derailed and future for the team with the disastrously stupid Watson trade. Chris Grier 2.0?
Jonathan Gannon fired so far, The Giants, Falcons, Raiders, Cardinals and Browns are looking for new head coaches. 5 teams having a massive overhaul in coaching staffs. There is going to be a lot of coaching staff changes around the league. and the day isnt over yet
Most likely but if Flores wants a guarantee to get fired, he’ll go to Vegas or New York. His best opportunity would be the Atlanta job. It’s a weak division and he could look dominant there.
Would be doing McDaniel a favor to fire him. The schedule is brutal and its hard to imagine the team being very good. It would be a miracle if he survives through october.
I think the rumors would be there if Harbaugh was fired… Dont count out the possibility of the Dolphins trying to have discreet talks of trading a draft pick to the Ravens.. and dont also count out the ravens rejecting the offer and then leaking the story of what we attempted to do while we still keep McDaniels for 2026..feels like we have had several embarassing front office moments like that with Ross..
I'm always amazed that we watch teams constantly fire coaches after one or two bad seasons, but we just stay put.
Definitely agree that the Falcons job is the most attractive job.. they are in a healthy cap situation, they had to eat it with Cousins this season because he accounted for 75 million in dead cap… he now accounts for 35 million in dead cap which is completely doable and he will get released before anymore guaranteeds are owed. With the right coach and a good offseason, theyre off and running..
The more I thought about it, they should have really tried to do what Cowherd had suggested in that thread I made about it a few weeks ago. They should have made an attempt at hiring Lane Kiffin and Kiffin himself should have waited before taking the LSU job so fast. With so many teams needing a coach now, there's not going to be many if any good ones available. Sucks.
Yeah, but seems a lot of these teams are the same ones every 2-3 years. I get the sentiment, but putting yourself on a coaching treadmill like that isn't really productive either and is often the sign of a poorly run organization. Arthur Blank is a more active Steven Ross lol. I'd want nothing to do with that weirdo.
They got rid of Tua. McDaniel is confidently safe. McDaniel will be involved in the hiring process for the GM. McDaniel will be in charge of the quarterback competition he's planning this off-season. This is what you wanted. The Dolphins should win alot of games next year.
Just remember, they're only one quarterback who can throw a ball 60 yards and scramble 10 yards away from being a contender!
You guys see McDaniel is quoted as saying that he is a part of the GM search?? WHAT THE ACTUAL **** That's like a promotion almost.
That would definitely help, don’t you think? One thing is quite clear though, current Tua just doesn’t cut it and he probably never will.
From what I've read today, the front office determined that their struggles were mainly tied to the QB position. Additionally, McDaniel said that Tua was not automatically done in Miami and there would be a path back to being the starter. I'm paraphrasing, but he said that Tua would have to manage parts of the game that he used to be good at managing...so that's pretty generic but basically saying that there's a decline that's on Tua (or injury maybe). I get the vibe that behind closed doors, Tua's attitude wasn't where it should be and they took action. We saw that in front of the media (and on the field) some as well. With that said, the season is over. How much redemption is left for Tua in Miami? I doubt he gets another opportunity if we can find a way to trade him.
Look at the Colts. They were absolutely rolling and then the QB goes down an it all falls apart. Losing 3 O linemen the 1st game and most of the DB's and Safety's might have been a contributing factor.
I mean injuries and a mediocre QB certainly don't help, but I really haven't seen anywhere near enough to be convinced that McDaniel is a good coach. Too much weakness against good teams, in primetime, outside the USA, in the cold. Failure to adapt, too easily abandons the run (his strength as a former run coordinator), failures in the third quarter. That said, I'm actually OK with giving him next year as I think it will be a reset/down year regardless. If he continues to struggle in all these aspects, move on. If he somehow prevails and has an OK year, then we can reassess and maybe he has turned a corner. I do question and worry though that we are bringing in a GM to a set situation that is predicated upon past failures from this organization. Will this GM report to Brandon Shore? Is he being forced to keep McDaniel no matter what? Is he reporting to McDaniel? Who is actually in charge, and what differentiates them from the misery that this front office has produced the past two decades?
The GM needs to run the personnel decisions and be in charge of that. He can get input into picking guys or FA's from the head coach but ultimately, it's his decision on player personnel. Where that stops is once the players are on the team. Then it's the head coach's responsibility. You can't have the GM report to the head coach IMO.
I don't hold the cold weather against him too much. They are always going to be at a natural disadvantage.
Unless, of course, the southern-most team in the league was actually added to the AFC South where the weather wouldn't be the biggest natural handicap in the NFL.
