I know Tua has had a couple really unfortunate moments with the media this year but they are also a bit overblown moments too. No reason to think he can't be a backup unless his body is totally shot which is possible. Also no reason to think a team wouldn't interested given the quality of the backup position. A backup position so weak a team got a 44 grandpa off the couch.
What team do you think would be at all interested if Miami is moving on from him after that big contract.
In a trade? None. Released and dirt cheap? Why not? What reason would there be for teams do be afraid of him as a free agent backup?
Maybe Indy or Cleveland, since they have similar problems with QBs they want to go away. Maye the Raiders since they don't have a QB. Maybe Baltimore if Jackson genuinely wants out and they can't come to terms. Most here wouldn't want Richardson or the piddler Watson. Some would jump at Jackson but I don't know if he's a long-term answer (mobile QBs don't last). I'd love it for the short term anyway because we'd be legit contenders overnight.
I just think that most teams wouldn't even consider Tua as a backup due to his fragility and injury concerns.
Tua has that Tebow, Kaepernick, Cam Newton type distraction most dont want on the bench. This coming March 14, 54 million of his contract becomes guaranteed.. and the dolphins will have to take it in the chin, just like the Falcons are taking it in the chin with Cousins. releasing tua puts us in cap hell.. our earliest out is 2027..By the time the 2027 offseason begins, he would have made 187 million off the dolphins with his rookie and extension combined.. Im Willing to bet He is not going to play for a team at 3-5 million as a backup He will do as his agent tells him to do, and ride it out till he collects every guaranteed dollar owed.
Before it became clear that there was something physically wrong with Tua, I thought that trading him (for no real return) after June 1 was viable. The other team basically got a league-average contract in 2026 for a starting QB and two no-risk option years after that. He'd be someone like Geno Smith essentially, and the Fins would get cap space out of it. However, there clearly is something very wrong with him. Possibly permanently, and I think there's a very good chance he wouldn't pass a physical with another team. It'll be interesting to see what he and/or the Dolphins have been hiding since late last season if that happens.
There doesn't really seem to be a good reason for him to have declined this drastically without it being something like his hip in which case it absolutely might be a wrap for him
I feel very strongly that something happened during the home game vs the Jets in 2024. He had played just fine up to that point, and to start that game. Then during the second half, its like the zip on his ball was just gone, he was floating passes and looked like he was fighting though it. The next week at Houston he took a hit where he was listed as having a rib injury, but I think that only made whatever was going on worse. He was floating passes vs the 49ers the next week, again gutting it out, then they shut him down for the season after that game. I had hoped that whatever it was would be fixed and he'd be ready to go this year, but he just never came back to where he was this season. And worse, he seemed to get progressively worse as the year went on too. So it may very well be his hip, that would make sense. Maybe his back too. His throwing shoulder? Who knows. But its something.
I agree, something is physically off and it's fairly obvious. I've felt that way for a good 4-6 weeks now and my opinion has only grown stronger. The way he answers reporters is even more perplexing- he's not an arrogant person and teammates have always said he goes above and beyond to take a personal interest in people and learn about them. It's possible he got paid and became a total jerk. That goes against everything I've known about him though and I struggle to accept it. A hidden injury makes a whole lot more sense.
Ewers looked good. He looked better than I thought he would. He definitely has a strong and live enough arm. I'm a little concerned with his build as he seems a little slight. He does seems to have some moxie to him. He doesn't get too rattled if he makes a bad play..That's so important for a QB. Just shake it off and keep slinging it. That was a great pass to Dulcich for the TD. He really threaded it in there with "conviction" and good timing, etc. The crazy thing is he's a 7th rd rookie playing in just his second game and looked much, much better than Tua ever did in these last two seasons. His arm is much better than Tua's. He doesn't have to torque and twist his whole body to just barely lob it deep for a pick. lol. He slings it in there and makes plays. Who knows what he will be? Next week will be a good test. It would be great if he could be good enough to go into next year while also bringing in some competition and depth.This QB class is turning out to be underwhelming, so it's probably better to wait until 27. What's true is that he looked far better than our elite, third string quarter back making a cuzillion dollars. I mean, soak that in. We have one of the highest paid players in the league as our third string qb. I usually don't care about how much money these guys get paid, but this is just insane. He got paid all of that money. Then all of his stupid " show me the money" BS as well as all of his other many stupid public comments he's made.,.."sitting on your couch eating chips", "Can't see over the line", calling out the lack of leadership and commitment from his fellow players and coach, the Cam Newton comments, etc, etc, etc.. I can't even remember them all as there have been so many. Picking him has screwed this franchise for many years. One of the worst picks in franchise history. (no pun intended). Someone now needs to call Hawaii 5-0 and put a warrant out on this clown for grand larceny. I'm just glad it's finally over. At least we have some hope, at least for another week. NE will be a good test.
I really disagree strongly there on that note. Tua often played excellently after he came back from his IR stint last year, between Weeks 8-13. He was getting the ball to the guys who were open, moving the sticks, nearly set the NFL record for completion percentage, and the offense averaged almost 30 ppg despite the run game being unreliable. But its unfortunately been all downhill from there.
I agree that was a good stretch for him but he had better weapons than Ewers, no? Thing is Tua always was best at the start of the season and struggled later on, his body is just not made for the NFL… Edit: Oh and Ewers gane against the Bucs is comparable to Tua‘s game against Atlanta (which was one of his better games and Buf) and that being a rookie and playing his second game.
The Miami Dolphins are always better at the start of the season and then struggle later on. In general.
True but with Tua you could see it imo, because his throws weren’t the same and everything else was a little off as well and the results of that is something we witnessed this season.
He often played excellent? Ok. Sure. Completion percentage? The most useless stat used by some Phin fans. The devil is in the details. Look at the more telling stats from last year. It was all just short or behind the LOS BS. The stats show that. It was almost unwatchable. It's all been just gimmicky BS. The passing game last year was really just a mock running game. Especially this year, it's all been the Achane show. Imagine what this ream would look like without Achane. You think they made this decision just based on how he played this year? No way. It's been a constant regression. He's always been an on script, spot thrower. That's not debatable anymore. The league has just caught up with him as it always does. Now he can sit on the bench with his millions in his snuggie, laughing it up. "Bleep" him.
You like what you like, and I'll like what I like. That passing game that McDaniel adapted to in the middle of last season is one of, if not the top Dolphins offense we've had since Marino, IMO. Probably the best since 1994. The bombs away, high risk stuff from 2023 is not for me at all.
