McDaniel has just dug his own grave. Does he really think this is going to save his job? We have all seen his offense operated without Tua. Dig in for a long rebuild, the Dolphins will not be competitive for a long time.
I just saw this and was going to post it. As I said in one of the other threads, I was a supporter of Tua and I believed in him. I think his 2023 season was unbelievably lights out and felt we were RIGHT there on the edge to take the next step and I thought last season was going to be that season to do it. Sadly, it didn't and Tua has been regressing ever since. I watched a video this morning on every pass Tua threw in 2024. He looked sharp and his throws were on a dot...until the Houston Texans game. After that game where his hip was injured, his throws were not as sharp or crisp, often lofting...and they've only gotten worse since then. I always knew Tua was going to have a short career, but I didn't think it was going to start spiraling down as soon as it has. Benching Tua and starting Ewers is a smart move on McDaniel's part. McDaniel's future in Miami is in question. His benching Tua demonstrates he's willing to look elsewhere for answers, but can McDaniel put together a string of wins to show that he is still the guy. Does Ewers have what it takes to step up and show that he could be the answer? Three weeks to go to find out.
I also like this move for multiple reasons. #1, Let Tua sit for a few weeks as some of those, "After practice and games, I don't think about football" comments come back to haunt him. Let the guy daydream about his family from the bench for three weeks. #2, Ewers may be the guy, he may not be. The only way we know is by playing him and since the season is now officially lost, this is the perfect time to give him a short tryout. If he's clearly not ready after his first start, then start Wilson the following week. #3, I don't think this is a bad move by McDaniel and I don't think it hurts his job security. The best man should start, period, and he's showing that he's more interested in Miami's future than he is in job security. I'm sure it wasn't an easy call and I respect him for it. #4, Ross needs a new GM and we all know GMs like to name their QBs. This opens the door for that process- how does Ewers look as a starter? Has Wilson tuned a corner (LOL, no!)? This lets Ross and potential candidates see exactly what we have and it helps to shape the draft next year. #5, I've speculated that maybe Tua/Miami is hiding a hip or back injury...it's just a guess on my part. Maybe he's just getting fat and lazy, I don't know. But I can't see how the rest would hurt him if he was going to return next year. Benching Tua could actually be the best thing for Tua.
I don't care if Ewers throws 6 pick 6s. As long as I don’t have to see that stupid *** smile ever again I'm fine with it.
Good. Please run a traditional scheme and let the rook cook! Let's go! We need film on guys performing in a system that is more likely to be in place once McDaniel is gone
Ideally, we get lucky and find the next Brock Purdy, then Tua's dead money won't hurt as bad. Now, McD should also give up play calling.
There is zero chance that this affects McDaniel's job security in the least, it's actually what he SHOULD DO as the head coach.
Agree and agree again. We're mathematically eliminated, Tua played like crap the entire duration of the win streak we did have. Everyone is burned out on him, it's time to look elsewhere. In no way should this be a nail in the coffin for coach. If anything it shows how invested he is in the Miami Dolphins team and that matters. He's got the stones to make this call, and once again, I applaud him for it.
Well Ewers can’t panic in the pocket anymore than Tua has lately. That was something else I noticed watching film on Tua today. He used to stand tall and remain calm in the pocket. Now he scrambles at phantom rushers.

I think it's more similar to what we saw with Aaron Rodgers in New York and Russell Wilson in Denver. Hopefully this is a sign that we're moving on from him. It'll be a 99 million dollar cap charge should we choose to do so. That's a historic number that we'll be forced to spread out over time. Denver pulled it off with Wilson, maybe we can too. We have to draft a guy and we need to bring in a playable veteran in the meantime. Don't think Zach Wilson has anything to offer, but the situation is much too volatile to have Tua backup Ewers. In the chance of injury, it would be a bad look to have Tua retake the wheel this late in the season. We have three games left, if Ewers gets chipped up, you definitely go with Wilson for remainder of season. I hate saying this, but I hope Tua has played his last down of football for us.
there is a few of us that have told yall so about Tua, for years now.. we told yall so, we told yall so.. It will be an interesting offseason.. im still not sure if we cut Tua because of his dead cap charge and money guaranteed.. but theyll definitely bring competition.. could Mac Jones reunite with Tua in an open competition with Ewers? I dont think there is a savior in the free agent or trade market.. but this is also a weak draft qb class.. so we may have to ride it through one more season
As I said right after the game, Tua is playing like a mid grade 3rd string QB and now he actually is one.
Ewers can scramble and run, so it's not likely he'll just keep going backwards like Tua now does. One of his primary struggles in college was when plays broke down and he had to quickly find a 3rd or 4th option. On designed run pays though or short yardage situations, he was excellent with his legs. So I think that's the biggest thing for him; avoiding mental errors that lead to negative plays. That's true for any NFL rookie QB though. For the run/scramble part of his game, he's comparable to Tannehill (before RT was told to stay in the pocket). Not an elite runner by any means, but he can scoot and get the 1st down.
Tua now has broken and NFL record.......for being the highest paid 3rd string QB in NFL history. Woo! Congrats!
My biggest fear here is that Ewers looks somewhat decent these next few games and we anoint him the next savior. I want him to succeed obviously - But even if he plays well, let's temper our expectations. As for Tua - He just doesn't have the work ethic or desire to be excellent - He will never adapt his game to be the next Drew Brees. He just doesn't have that killer mentality. He robbed this franchise BLIND.
Why would you be fearful if Ewers plays well, my fear is he doesn't which means we look for a QB elsewhere either by trade, draft or free agency. I have no clue what we are getting with Ewers I just know not the same old, same old. As far anointed next savior, nobody can do that until they prove through consistency they as an elite QB who can make plays.
Ewers will do rookie stuff as he adjusts to NFL speed. He will probably also have a few glimmering moments as well. More than anything, he just needs reps at live speed to see how he develops.
