Yeah, I've mentioned many times how on so many plays there are usually better options with guys open and he just doesn't see them or he's afraid to step up and take a hit or he's afraid to throw a pick, etc. All the best coaching and scheming in the world is not going fix that issue. He can't buy time with his legs. He can't move well around the pocket or take off when he has a wide open lane. He's just so limited and therefor, so is the offense with him at the helm. Have to be careful when criticizing stats. No statistician would put any weight on small sample size. I've said so as much many times. Passer rating for small sample size, especially for a single game, is not a good measure. But over large sample it is a very good measure. You adjust passer rating for era and look at who have the best career ratings you get a list of the "consensus" best QBs in history. It captures what matters really well when you have a large sample.
Go back once again and look up.Alex.smiths career. And Qb rating doesn't account for clutch play. Mahomes Qb rating hasn't been as good as Tuas last couple years but nobody in the world would take Tua over him.
And nobody outside of this fan base thinks Tuas elite.They all rate him.15th or below despite Qb rating. Why is that Cbrad?
You're just proving my point. Alex Smith was a slightly above average QB based on his career passer rating alone after you adjust for era. He only had 2 seasons where his passer rating was really good. Guy is nothing special, which is what passer rating shows. Mahomes' career rating after 4000+ attempts is 101.8. Tua's after only half that sample size is 97.7. When I've done career ratings I've always thresholded at 4000 attempts. Let's see where Tua is after that. But based on passer rating alone you'd choose Mahomes, not Tua. So you're totally off base with your criticism here of passer rating as a stat. Regarding clutch and any other contextual factors, it's not whether passer rating includes everything you might think is important. It's how well it predicts win% that matters. The variance in win% explained by passer rating is about 40%. That's massive for a purely offensive stat, assuming defense is close to 50%. He was thought of as maybe in that elite category when his passer rating was #1. His passer rating ranking kept dropping, and this year it's just average. The perception fits the stats here.
